thanks for the response rded, id agree with you on that notion, and i think i know why youve chosen that answer.

i mean, come on guys, how 'far' would your compromise go, considering that the center channel would be the anchor of all things so to speak.

Work on these should start in September.

That is my story, and I am sticking to it; and I'm cheating.

Dang Brent!!! Don't rub it in But yes if I could swing it, I'd add one more C2 for a center

Yes Joms, and going from the SC center to the SCX has yielded tremendous results. Maybe I'll use the whole basement for HT in the near future and do a projector with a drop down screen, if I could convince the wife not to divorce me if I go that route... For the record she did say that the C2s are better utilized if I use the whole length of the room. I'll remind her of her statement when the time is right

dont forget - projectors are fallin to a delectable price point of less than 2k...

but then again, sonics first, visuals second in my book.

Sonics first, my speaker pokes up right on the letterboxing so it rarely interfers with the picture - it never interferes with the tv set. I've use horizontal centers for a while now and I won't look back. I think I was the first one here to do that - not sure.

Lightbulb Based on this information, which center channel should I get??

Hi Big Daddy,

Very interesting all the research and analysis you did, but now I have one concern. Based on all the information you wrote, I'm planning to get a center channel for my Home Theater system but I'm divided into the B&W LCR3 (Two 4.5 inches mid drivers) and the B&W DM604 S3 (one 6.5 inches mid driver and two 7 inches bass drivers). So far, I have four B&W DM309 speakers that I'm planning to use them as fronts and surrounds. The LCR3 is the center channel B&W recommends for the DM300 series but it doesn't have the same size of drivers than the DM309. On the other hand, the DM604 S3 belongs to a higher series and it was made using different materials.

Taking into consideration 3 Home Theater basics: 1. Use the same kind of speakers for all the channels, 2. The center channel reproduces 60%-80% of the movie sound and 3. The center channel D'Appolito array (Midrange, Tweeter, Midrange) is not the best option for an optimal sound dispersion. Which of these speakers will be the best option to get the best benefit for my Home Theater, the LCR3 or the DM604 S3?
If the best option is the LCR3, I will place it vertically, but if the DM604 S3 is the best option, what if I change the cabinet to build one like the big center channel you used to demonstrate your point? (The 2,500 dlls center channel array)

Best regards,

Frank.

Your options in descending order are:
  1. The best option is three identical front speakers (3 DM309).
  2. The next best option is to buy a center speakers that is timbre matched to the two front speakers and is placed vertically (2 DM309 and one LCR3 placed vertically).
  3. The third option is to place a timbre matched speaker horizontally that is corrected for the MTM flaws (2 DM309, and one LCR3 placed horizontally).
  4. The fourth option is to use a center speaker that is from a different line and is not timbre matched to the other front speakers (2 DM309, and one DM604).
If you want to build your own speaker, that is also a great idea.

Thank you, Big Daddy!

As I can't get a 5th DM309 to complete to match the front speakers, I will go with the second best option, the LCR3 placed vertically and when I have the option to buy 3 identically speakers, I will place the four DM309 as surround and back surround.

Best regards,

Frank.

hi there,

i have a question on centre speaker placement.. i'm doing an install for my brother in a couple of weeks. His tv is the corner of the room, so the left/right speaker will be either side of his screen- the centre speaker can be either

1) Vertically mounted at same height as left/right speakers but in the corner behind the tv
2) Horizontal - lying behind the tv on the stand..

The fear i have is that with the speaker being behind the tv that the tv will block the sound from the centre so much as to make is sound very poor..

The tv is a couple of feet from the corner so will the audio from the centre just make its way around the tv?

left/right/center are Monitor Audio r250hds

Surrounds are MA r180HDs

and sub is MA rsw12 all in black gloss

specs of speakers here:
