![]() ![]() I recently purchased a JVC Everio GZ-HM670, upgrade from my previous JVC GR-D850. The main reason I upgraded my camcorder is that I wanted to start recording my home videos in HD, and since I bought a BD burner earlier this year, I was going to put it to good use. The online place were I bought this camcorder indicated that it was in Full HD (1080p). While it's true that the camcorder records in 1920x1080, it's an interlaced signal and not progressive. I bought it anyways to try it out and if I wasn't happy, I would send it back. The camcorder records up to 24 Mbps. After I received the camera and I began recording, I was pleased with what I saw. The bad side is that the image has more noise than I expected in the decently lit indoor scenes and in the night scenes the noise isn't too excessive but a strange ghosting effect appears when I pan the cam, I'm still trying to figure out what is causing that. It seems as if the camcorder applies some kind of noise reduction and that is what causes that, but I haven't gotten to the root of it. When I switch the camcorder to the picture mode, the ghosting effect is gone in the night scenes and an excessive amount of noise appears on the image. For the positive, the picture quality is definitely better than that of my previous camera. Outdoor daylight scenes look great and I'm satisfied with the well lit indoor scenes. The convenience of being able to transfer the files in to the computer instead of capturing them in real time is another positive point. While I can't edit to much on sony vegas because my cpu isn't fast enough at the moment, I'm able to merge the video clips with TSmuxer and author a nice Blu-ray disc on DVD Architect. I made a sample test disc with an hour of randomly recorded footage and the video played great averaging about 24 Mbps, and all the sub-menus were very easy to access. I was able to make a "special features" menu to include old SD videos I shot with my old cam and it all played fine. Now I have to film enough to fill up a DL Blu-ray disc. While I later found out a few other cams record in 1080p with 24fps or 60fps, they were a little out of my price range because of the software I had to get. I can say that I'm pretty happy with my first HD cam. |

Congrats!!!! And nice camera!!!
I bought one something like this one earlier this year to replace a camera that was stolen. My model # GZ-HM340, I don’t have the 40X, mine is only 20X optical. I haven’t used it much, but since you made this post, I think maybe I should pull it out and use it more. I will be going on a few business trips soon, and that maybe a great time to use it. I have no complaints about my camera, I kinda like the upload to youtube, but youtube will have some audio problems. It’s a popping noise I get from youtube, but not the original This is the one that was done on the new camera, and you can hear the popping noise. It’s not on the orginal, but only on Youtube. I even re-uploaded a few times just to see if it was the transfer. I have other vids, that do the sametime. Here is one, I did prior to buying the HD camera, which was done with my cellphone. I was in shock at the bad quality, but the audio was fantastic. You don’t have to listen to the whole things to see what I mean, maybe just the first few minute’s. |

Thanks!
Yes, I can definitely hear the popping noise with the video uploaded to youtube via the new cam. I haven't tried to upload any videos to youtube yet, but I might do so later on this week to see if I have the same problem. It's a strange issue. It might be caused by the way the encode of 'upload to youtube' feature works? Maybe you can try to upload the video file directly to youtube from your PC instead of through the cam. I also wasn't recording a lot of personal videos with my old SD cam, but now I'll be recording a whole lot more. it's a very nice little cam. |

I recorded a clip to hear if I had the same audio issues on youtube as your video has. I didn't record it in the uxp mode, instead, I recorded it in the sp mode which uses about 12Mbps to save on uploading time. I uploaded the file directly to youtube as you did. It doesn't seem to have the same popping noise your video has.
Maybe it was a little glitch youtube had at the time you uploaded that video in that quality. Hopefully it's resolved for you at this point. |

A little update. I ended up buying a BD-Re so I can do a lot of tests with the final footage I shoot for my home video. This is the video bitrate and the specs of the hour long random footage I shot.

I'm extremely pleased with the well lit indoor scenes and I'm extremely happy with the outdoor daylight scenes. Still, that strange ghosting effect is there in the darker scenes when i pan the cam. Some candle light features shows up on screen and then this effect takes place...... It looks like a noise reduction feature, but when I call JVC about it, they weren't of much help. They just told me to switch the camcorder to manual, and since the candle light icon was gone, problem solved, but that's not the case. If anyone has any idea on how I can remove or play around with the noise reduction feature on this camcorder, please let me know. I can't figure it out. Here is a sample video in a very poorly lit scene. See the strange ghosting/trailing effect caused when I pan the cam. |
