Default Ideas for HT System?

I have about a 12 x 12 living room, so it is relatively small, what type of setup would work best here?

Well what type of setup should someone have in that size of a room? I mean I don't need to wake up the neighbors, but I'd like to be able to hear the dialogue and effects in the movies a bit better.

Like Rpatt said. We would need to have an idea of what you want to spend. Clearly you know we love spending other peoples money!

From the links you provided I'm seeing an investment of roughly $250 for a receiver and 5.1 speaker setup. And you're also asking to see if there are better deals around. This tells me your budget is quite limited, which I can fully appreciate. Yet, I would be remiss if I did not give you my opinion on what a waste of money that actually is.

If it were me I'd get a nice soundbar for that or (if possible) a starter receiver (without all the bells and whistles) and 2 speakers.

Thank you for the opinion, what type of receiver and 2 speakers would you recommend if I went that route? Also if I went with a soundbar? I had one before but it didn't work out.

Take a look at this site for good deals on receivers. They are factory refurbished with full warranties. I've had good luck with them.

Ok I know this setup sucks royally, but you can see pictures of my living room and my TV setup in my pictures, do you think this would work at all for me?

Ok, I'll be brutally honest here.....It does suck and within a year you'll want to throw it out the window, if not sooner!. I understand you want to get the 5.1 surround experience, but given what you can spend (which I can fully appreciate) I would personally urge you to get a 2ch receiver and 2 speakers or a soundbar. Given where your TV is located, the soundbar would be a nice alternative.

What are my options for both? I mean as far as low budget, mid budget, or high, what are the 3 alternatives?

Please....we need a budget of some sort. Otherwise we're just grabbing at straws here.
