About the same time that you will see:

I won't mind being wrong about this, but I still very much doubt it.

One step at a time. I'm still waiting for UHD-R discs.

I think that you will be waiting a very long time for 8K content. I am not aware of a single studio that has released any movies or TV shows in 8K nor that have even announced any plans to do so. The studios are not offering 8K content on any format, physical or digital.

I never made any comment about wanting 8K content in the first place. 4K is still arguably in its infancy, with much of the content available being mere 2K upscales.

At this point, I'd be over the moon if we can finally get our hands on writeable UHD discs so that I can finally burn my 4K footage to disc.

I was basing my comment upon your saying "one step at a time" which, to me, implied that you saw more than just a single step along the path to 8K content and a step that came after getting your hands upon your coveted recordable 4K disc media.

It takes long enough to burn a dual layer bd-r; burning a 100 GB disc would be much sloooower...

Aren't UHD discs practically BD-XL, though? There is a triple layer BD-100 size available in write-once recordable and rewritable variants, and just some time ago they launched a quad-layer BD-128 size, but only available in write-once recordable only. Are UHD players able to read these kinds of discs? If so, the only thing that would be currently missing is the authoring software for consumers capable of finishing the video in compliance to UHD specs (HEVC, 10-bit color, 2160p, WCG, HDR10, etc.) and burning it to the disc, right?

I just saw FYE/second spin has stopped buying music and movies. Don’t know if this is significant, but they were one (the?) last places to sell/buy used it seem like.

This is old news buddy. It was mentioned months ago.

As a general comment, I wish people would realise that retail stores not selling discs doesn’t = end of discs.

I have never been to an F.Y.E. store, not even before Trans World Entertainment unloaded the faltering chain for a mere $10 million to Sunrise Records this year.

Despite this, I was still somehow able to buy 15 titles on disc yesterday from other, more profitable, online retailers.

Give me one good reason why anyone with online access would go to a mall to purchase any kind of entertainment?

I have purchased a fair amount of physical entertainment and since the early 80's, for the most part, only have to go to the mail box or front door to retrieve it.

Just how much longer will there be mall shopping of any kind? Mall's seem to be not doing so well as seen here.

I sold stuff to second spin a week ago, so it wasn’t old news to me pal

News to me as well. However, there is still EagleSaver for selling.

f.y.e. (for your entertainment) F.Y.E. has come down in quality...

F.Y.E. has become quite a bit disappointing for me in the past few years, which is kind of a shame really because while online shopping is more convenient, nothing beats the thrill and excitement of finding a most wanted title sitting on a retail store shelf, waiting to be added to your collection.

Around New Year's Eve, I re-visited the one where I purchased my first Blu-ray five years ago and boy, how things sure have changed there. Back in the day I remember being amazed and overwhelmed by the assorted selection of titles available for purchase, it was pretty hard settling for just a few. But now, I was rather underwhelmed at how the same shelves stand today. The grand majority of what was available were pre-owned/used in pretty poor presentations, 4K UHD Blu-rays were almost non-existent across the entire store, and what was new was priced at full MSRP while it could be found in Amazon for much cheaper (I've found an item going for $100 when it could be foun new on Amazon for merely ~$40!). Also might be a pettier thing, but the titles available this time around were not a interesting back then. I've come to find way better stuff at other retailers, although I've noticed they're faltering too, unfortunately.

I think the aspect of the news is not another potential change to who sells physical media, but more so the fact that a major outlet to sell physical media to is not buying at the moment. Even if you have never sold or have plans to sell any of your collection, it is an interesting footnote to the conversation. I can think of a couple of posters who will spin the story to fit their narrative.

I enjoy shopping online in the morning before I am even showered and dressed for public appearance. I like not wasting my time, or my gasoline, hoping that a store actually has anything that I want to buy in stock. Being able to shop globally is another unique benefit of online shopping.

I find it rather fun and exciting to have packages arrive at my doorstep; it feels like I am getting a present even though I know that I paid for the order.

Trans World selling FYE chain for $10 million, ending local control in Albany

Anyone rent discs from their local library? My son and I go on a weekly basis. All free. All you need is a library card which costs nothing. I can also look up titles online and reserve them and they are delivered to the branch we go to.

Old news that has been posted previously in the F.Y.E. deals thread. But even a rerun is bound to be news to someone.

Article says all employees will be retained, and the stores will be rebranded.

Sold for $10million. Myyyy goodness that seems cheap. That's so low that a part of my mind is like, "Even I could afford to buy this retail chain." (To clarify: I could not.)

I donate to them, but I have never rented from them. I have an abundance of stuff to watch already that only gets more abundant over time.
