Default Mitsubishi 73' DLP, has dots on screen, fix or replace?

My trusty Mitsubishi 73 inch DLP has been having issues with the white dots on one side of the screen. I have just dealt with it because I didn't want to track down someone to fix it, or have to pay through the nose to fix it. well now it has gotten progressively worse and the white dots are now going all the way across the screen, and now we also have black dots on the screen as well.

I remember seeing someone else on here had the issue and it was a DLP chip they had replaced and it fixed it. This tv is 5-6 years old now and is out of warranty and my extended warranty just expired last year. it is to the point my wide wont watch any movies in the theater room because of the screen. I also remember when I read about the other members issues with this, it was fairly expensive to fix.

so my question is this... does anyone know a round about estimate how much it is to fix this issue? and would it be worth it to get it fixed, or just replace the tv with a Flat Panel TV ( LED or 4k ) or possibly a projector (ceiling mount) ? not wanting to spend more than $1500 at the very most right now.

blaze my friend, I think it's time to get a new tv. sorry, but I think that's the cold hard truth. I have as you can see a Sony SXRD HD RPTV and it's beautiful and I love it. I have had it for about 10yrs and I've had the problems that plague it fixed over the years and thank goodness the last repair has held this long. I replaced the lamp last year and I looks like a new tv.

having said that, when it starts to fail, make no mistake, I'm buying a new tv. I have a spare brand new lamp and if it's not a lamp issue, then like I said, i'll be buying a new tv. I'm living on borrowed time with the set and I'm happy it's still working.

rather than spend good money on the set and have something else konk out on it (which would really piss you off) take that money and buy yourself a nice new one. while you can't get a 73" for the money you mentioned, you can actually get a really 55" nice 4K LCD or a nice 65" LCD (shop around) for that money or a little bit more in the 65" flavor.

best of luck, keep us posted.

Did you replace it yourself? I thought I remembered reading it had to do some soldering and other stuff, and had to take most of the tv apart. 250 I could do but I am not able to do the rest of it, and paying someone labor to do it , I may be better off getting another TV...

I think I can get a 75 inch for around 1600.00 maybe , I will have to do some research. I was kind of wanting to go the 4K route but there isn't a lot of 4K content out there yet, and don't want to pay 40$ for a 4K movie yet. My other issue is anything smaller than a 65 inch would seem so small in our theater room. We have no windows in that room so we thought about a short throw monitor and fixed screen ( 100 inches or so ) for what we would pay for the tv...

I repaired mine myself. Bought a new DLP chip for $200 and it wasn't that hard to do but I have a little bit of a technical background. There are videos on YouTube that walk you through the replacement. Watch a couple and see what you think, it really is quite easy to do.

First things first, I'd check your HDMI cables.

I can't really tell if it looks the same from your photo, but I had a similar problem with my 60" Mitsu DLP. When I watched a blu-ray it would look like it was snowing across the screen, and it was even more pronounced watching 3D.

I replaced all my HDMI cables, which were a Frankenstein's monster of various brands, with the same brand (cheap but 1.4 compliant cables from Monoprice) and it went away. I still have random handshake issues because I'm running from PS4>Receiver>3D Convertor Box> TV. Every now and then it just randomly flashes "No Signal" and then takes a minute to get a picture but I've accepted it as a quirk of my TV.

That is definitely the chip. Mitsubishi supplied the chip for me and all I had to pay was installation which was around $200. TV was out of warranty and they still supplied it. Not sure if they will still do that but doesnt hurt to check.

This is what I did. Call them @ 800-332-2119 and give them your model, serial # and date of purchase, tell them you have the white spots. They will set up a workorder with a local Mitsubishi servicer to come to your home and replace the DMD chip. Mitsubishi will supply the part (part # 276P595010) for free, but you must pay $200 in labor.

Again was a couple of years ago but doesnt hurt to try.

One of my best friends had that TV, and your related problems.
He had it repaired twice.
1st. repair only lasted less than 1 year. as well as the 2nd.

look to the future... 4K
