Default Sony SXRD 60A3000 - finally upgrading but set is still going strong

Well I am one of the lucky ones where my optical block never had problems.

I believe now thought that LCD has advanced to point where they have equal or better PQ - would former SXRD RP owners agree?

I decided to get a Vizio 65" P-Series. With the multi-array dimming, the blacks are supposed to be great and I hope comparable if not better to my trust KDS60A3000 that served me well for years.

If there is anyone in Chicagoland that is interested in purchasing my 60A3000, PM me.

Would love to hear from others who moved on up from the SXRD RP and their experiences.

Willing to let this one go to a new home for $250 OBO. But any offers considered especially for forum members here!

New 65" P-Series is coming tomorrow so can't have this Sony sitting around house during holidays or wifey will give me dirty looks

As a (still current) KDS-50A2020 SXRD owner myself, I'd be curious to hear from anyone who cares to respond to the OP regarding the picture quality difference between these rear pro sets and the new 4K LCDs or OLEDs...

My set is STILL going strong with no optical block failure and still on the first replacement lamp...

Whats up my fiend? I personally have no comment for this topic, however I am digging the new avatar you chose. Hope all is well.

I'm keeping my SXRD until it blows up and dies! as long as I can replace a lamp and end up with a "new set" i'll not be upgrading. this picture is beautiful. of course, I'm an audio guy so, I can wait on the 4K, I've got 7.1.4 so, as long as the tv keeps working, i'll keep watching and loving it. I also have a UHD player to get those ATMOS/DTS:X tracks too.

so, like I said, until this thing fails to work with a new lamp, the 1080P picture it puts out is all I need.

now, I will say, the LG OLED's look stunning to me beyond most 4K sets, that's not a put down, just my opinion. the sammys and sony 4K's look really good too. remember, I'm easy to please video wise.

Thanks Wayne; hope all is well with you, too. Though why didn't you just reply in my amp topic thread?

Serious, Solar? Good to hear from a "dedicated" SXRD owner...

You don't feel like you're "missing out" on anything by not moving to 4K? I'm hesitant for a few reasons (money being one of them, as we're having a difficult time justifying the price of a large new 4K HDR set) and now that I read, in this forum, that 8K should possibly be arriving by 2026 or so, I feel like another resolution upgrade is around the corner (that's an argument for another time, though, what with the possibility of no 8K physical media, viewing distance issues, et al)...

Still, while our SXRD is still going strong like yours, I feel like I've just "grown accustomed" to the rear projection image and that I'd like to move on to sharper, more "saturated" images as yielded by a good LCD; our current lamp is definitely aging (would you believe that I STILL get the "replace lamp soon" warning every time I turn on the set and the lamp STILL has not blown? It's been at least a YEAR this message is popping up on our screen) as you can tell it's dimmed out a bit, and I'd like to replace the set with something bigger in size.

I do, however, share you passion for feeling like "as long as the SXRD doesn't die, it's good by me" -- and those LG OLEDs do look stunning, don't they?

As for your UHD player, you don't need a UHD player to "get" the Atmos and DTS:X tracks, do you? What you'd need is a new AVR or processor so the tracks can be bitstreamed, no? Unless you meant you're buying 4K discs exclusively that have only the Atmos and X soundtracks?

I'm a little late chiming in but I was/am the owner of a 50" XBR1 that I bought from Sears back in Feb. 2006. Unfortunately, it was one of those that did have the green blob Optical Block issue but after the replacement was installed, it worked fine for quite a few years but eventually it had to be replaced again. I believe I had two bulb replacements (which I expected) and the other problem that came up was the fan(s) unit failed and had to be replaced. All this was covered under the Protection Agreement from Sears that I kept renewing every year. Part of the reason I upgraded about a year ago was that parts were getting hard to find and the second optical block was rebuilt from the faulty one and the last bulb replacement was not a Sony. The bigger reason I upgraded was I wanted a 3D set and Sony and LG both announced they would no longer manufacture 3D models. I got a 60" LG8500 from Crutchfield for a good price and, I have to say, I'm impressed with the pq. The Sony is still here; sitting in a spare bedroom. I really don't know what to do with it. It's too big for any of the other bedrooms and the one room I planned to put it in got vetoed by the Mrs. anyway.

Hey Thanks for Your SXRD Comments!

I have the 50A2020 and it's beginning to show signs of the green/yellow HAZE, not the "blobs," and it's becoming distracting to the point that even Blu-rays don't look that great on this set anymore. We just changed to a new lamp a few weeks ago, which seems to have exacsterbated the problem; I'd love a 4K set but we just cannot afford it (and I also want one of Oppo's UHD BD players) so for now I'm stuck.

Is your LG a 1080 or 4K set?

howdy, sorry to hear that, you know how we love those SXRD's. sounds like it's time to get ready to start looking for a 4K replacement.

while it's not for everyone, I have two TCL 4K TV's. one 55" that has Dolby Vision, 72 zone FALD and supports ATMOS in my bedroom 5.1.2 system and one 49" that supports HDR10 and ATMOS for my 2 channel setup.

I am very happy with both of them both give me great pictures and have tons of 4K/HDR10/DV/ATMOS streaming apps. both of them are incredibly low priced (check the links) but, don't let the low price and perhaps the lesser know brand name fool you. I am nothing but happy with them. but, of course, you have to get what makes you happy. having said that, if you get a chance, you can check them out at a BB near you. they usually have one, or the other, or both on display.

I'm not a video guy, I'm an audio first guy, so I'm easier to please than most. the DV model is very will received in reviews and by owners so is the HDR model. I know they are releasing new 2018 models, with a 65" that supports Dolby Vision with 120 zones of FALD so, I'm looking forward to checking that out and if it gets at least the same reviews and ratings as the current DV model I own, I will look into buying it and replacing the ol trusty SXRD I have in my 7.1.4 HT.

best of luck to you and please keep us posted.

While I always appreciate the dialogue, Solar, my comments were directed at the previous poster; no worry, though, as you're right that I need to start looking at a 4K replacement. The thing is, this year's CES that I attended told me one thing: Get ready for 8K and forget 4K existed, and that worries me...

Additionally, my trusty Onkyo 605 -- RIGHT AFTER I just got finished saying in a thread in the Receiver section of this forum that the AVR has been flawless and trouble-free from day one -- has begun showing "issues;" last night, I ran a system diagnostic on the whole setup and I couldn't get the 605's onscreen menu to pop up (just got a blue screen)...but that's a discussion for another time and thread.

Thanks so much for the information about the TCL displays -- I'll definitely check those links you provided out!

Thanks again.

It's a 4K. I believe I paid $1399 for it. What sealed the deal was free shipping which is almost unheard of for a TV to the Islands. In fact, that they even offered to ship it was a bigger deal. Most companies just flat-out refuse once I enter my zip code.
