Default Mitsubishi 82" WD-82738

I saw this model on QVC last night for $2799. Anyone have it or seen it first hand? I've been looking at 60" Plasmas/LCDs, but for this price an 82" screen is awful appealing.

I am seriously considering it. That is a very nice size for the room I'm thinking of putting it in. Would fill it up nicely.

Was planning on getting a new set during the January sales, but that price is what has me almost ready to bite. Would be a very nice way to watch some of the Bowl games, plus I could also give one of the 3D Blu-ray players a work out.

I have the 73738 and absolutely love it. I got in on the $1300 deal at Pauls TV a few months ago and it is a phenomenal TV. I would re-buy it in a heartbeat.

Wow...

I would absolutely LOVE an 82 inch screen...

Holy Camolie...

I think I saw that too on QVC...or was it HSN? One of them was running it -- I didn't think it was THAT big though...

They had three. A 65"(I believe), 73" and the 82". I've since previewed one at a friend of a friends home. Football looks incredible.

I've pretty much made my mind up, just waiting for a good price. They sold out of the 82's pretty quick.

I just bought the 65738 off shopnbc.com a couple of weeks ago for $1499 with 2 pair of the Xpand 3D glasses. Pretty good deal if you ask me, 3D being the icing on the cake. Oh yeah, no tax, free shipping and 6 months no interest.

My nephew has one. It is OK for the size/price, but the picture is very dull. I still have my hopes up for the 72" LG or Vizio LED TV's that are supposed to be marketed next year.

I should have used the qualifier "dull on a comparative basis". The 82" is duller than the 73" which is duller than the 60" (you can see this in the QVC infomertial), it's the price you pay for the increase in size. My nephew upgraded from the 73" (which my brother also has) to the 82". Side by side, the difference is easily noticeable. My 70" Sony XBR2 is brighter and sharper than my brother's 73" Mits, but eventually will have problems, since the Sony SXRD TV's have a notorious problem with developing a yellow or green blob after about 8000 hours of use. That is why I am placing my hopes on the upcoming 72" LG or Vizio LED displays. I don't know of anyone who wished they had a smaller TV.

I've seen some of these at Best Buy and I'm not that impressed with the picture quality. I wouldn't mind owning a 82" HDTV but it has to be a projector or Panasonic/Pioneer plasma.

I'm sure sports look incredible...I'm incredibly jealous...

What about film...how did it look on that screen? Did you view any films?

I think I recall they had all those sizes on the home shopping channel -- I didn't remember they went up to 82...but I remember them carrying three giant sizes like that...

Good luck with it if you get it; I don't think anyone else makes a television that large for public purchase, do they? I.e. LCD, plasma...

Mitsu is the only one making such a large set, yes?

Interesting...I wouldn't have even thought about the size/duller picture scenario before this; that's a bit disheartening. I have an SXRD as well, but never experienced the green/yellow blob which runs so rampant through the line...plus, I'm on the same bulb some many years since purchase...

I would give getting such a massive screen a second thought if the PQ is going to be obviously affected...can anyone else confirm if this happens with screens as large as this? Not that I can fit anything beyond a 58 inch in our space/budget anytime soon, but...just curious...

Interesting as well, Blu-ray Fanatic; what was it that didn't impress you? Were they demoing high def material like a Blu-ray or was it standard broadcast stuff?

When you say you wouldn't mind owning an 82 inch HDTV but it would need to be a "projector," do you mean a REAR pro TV set, or a FRONT PROJECTOR setup? If you meant front projection, that's not an actual TV...but a Panasonic/Pioneer plasma at that size would probably look stunning...

Anyone looking at a Mits TV saying the pic is dull is looking at a TV that's not set up properly. I have the 65" and the pic is phenomenal. Have never seen a green/yellow blob either. Before this TV I had a reg 73" Mits that I sold to a friend. That TV still works great. My new 65" is 3D which also looks phenomenal.

I'm not sure if it's a function of the bulb wattage (or "pixel-shifting", or whatever), but all DLP's suffer from what I would describe, from my experience, as a lack of brightness. It was the same problem that I had as an owner of 3 Mitsubishi TV's that I was (at the time) willing to sacrifice for the screen size. I haven't seen a Mitsubishi LaserVue TV yet (I am hoping to see one next week), but I understand from reading posts on AVS forum that this problem as well as some of the sharpness issues has been resolved to some extent - but the 75" costs $5K at discount. The SXRD's seemed to be the answer - they were big, sharp, and bright, but problems (discoloration after about 8000 hours of use) with the optical block ended their production. This was true for the original Qualia, XBR1 and now, of course, the XBR2. So, until manufacturers start producing 70"+ plasmas and LED's, there are few options for large TV's with clarity and brightness - sorry, the 70" XBR7 LCD and very large Panasonic plasmas at $20,000+ don't count. I still have my fingers crossed for the LG 72LEX9 and the 72" Vizio XVT LED's that are rumored to be coming next year.

The green/yellow blob issue seems inherent to only Sony rear pro designs.

My folks have a 55" Mitsubishi Diamond DLP, a monster that sits on the floor and looks like a piece of furniture...but this thing is beginning to die, with an image that "bends" in the center of the screen and which then suddenly pops back to being straight. It lasted them a few years, but my dad has since passed away and my mom is having some trouble with the set, beyond the "bent image."

Indeed, I realize why Sony went out of the rear pro HDTV sector, but still, I haven't had one issue with my KDS-50A2020...no premature bulbs going, no blobs...

Just, perhaps, a coldish/bluish tinge to the set's "Standard" picture mode even with a color temp of Neutral that gets annoying sometimes but that's my preferred picture mode.
