Work on that RPTV!

I've finally finished working with the geometry and fixing overscan on my RCA D52W20. I've done manual convergebce, and cleaned off the lenses. This tv is good as new. Picture hasn't been this sharp or bright in years!

very good! how did you adjust geometry?? to me that would seem very difficult!

you're using the DVI connection correct?

I was using an HDMI to DVI cable for a while and it died. I had noticed in the meantime that I didn't have huge overscan on 480p or through components. I wanted then to just connect with components, but then I realized that my player, like all new ones, will only output at 480i through component out.

I replaced the cable with an HDMI to component out. At 1080i, the image was still huge. The geometry was just a whole lot of trial and error. Once I finally got the service manual, all the terms were identified. It was easier then.

I mostly adjusted Horizontal Amplitude and Vertical Amplitude. I think I still may need to bring down the Linearity a bit and and bring Vertical Amplitude back up just a tiny bit to make up for it. Right now, the bottom of the screen looks fine, but things begin to elongate as they get closer to the top of the screen. It's not too bad, but could be a tad better.

You should consider the HDMI-DVI route again.

The picture is actually a little better with this (my understanding is that this type of TV works better with analogue signals). It runs more smoothly with this converter. With the DVI, there was some weird jitteriness going on at start-up. It’s also my understanding that component cables can carry a 1080i signal just fine (1080i is as high as this tv goes.)

By the way, I am brand new to this, so when I say, “it’s my understanding”, I just mean I read it somewhere, and might be dead wrong. So if I am wrong, please let me know.

I went back into the service menu yesterday and corrected that linearity problem. No more stretching.

The DVI issue could be related to your cable that eventually went bad?

I had a RCA D52W23 and used the HDMI-DVI cable with no issues.

DVI and Component will carry 1080i no problem, you are correct. If you are happy with the way you have it, by no means change it for me!
