Default Just Lost Our Second SXRD Lamp: Is This Normal?

Since owning our Sony KDS-50A2020 rear projection set, bought new circa 2008 or so, we've only had one replacement lamp put in (after the original blew), and it finally went last night (after having the "end of life" warning message on our screen for well over a year, strangely). We have a home theater company we've dealt with in the past for ceiling speaker installs and stuff like that coming to replace the lamp (they ordered the replacement for us as well), but I wanted to ask if the following seems normal when these lamps go, because I don't remember this happening last time...

When the lamp went out last night, we had a news station on in the background while we were in the kitchen (the wife and I) and suddenly everything stopped -- picture AND sound, and we got the flashing red light on the bottom of the screen. But should SOUND from our cable box have gone out, as well? If it was only the lamp that had blown, why did we lose audio, too?

We have our high def box connected to this TV via component cables and separate left/right analog audio cables, so I don't understand why if the lamp blew, the audio should go out as well...

Anyone else with rear projection sets ever experience this?

If memory serves, these sets were notorious for having lamp problems.

That's not the question I asked. I know and understand rear projection displays need changing from time to time, as do projectors for large standalone screens, and yes these SXRDs were notorious for manufacturing defects like green/yellow blobs and blown optical blocks (of which I've experienced none so far)...but I was asking if blown lamps usually come along with an elimination of AUDIO, as well, because our cable box stopped outputting sound when this happened...

I'm thinking it must just be a system wherein the audio and everything shuts off from a particular source when the lamp blows.

i want to make sure i understand what your saying. you have your cable box connected directly to the tv via component cables for video and analog rca L & R for audio am i reading that correctly?

are there no HDMI cables connected to anything from this tv?

i can only gather that it's protective that if the lamp has failed and you got the red blinking indicator lamp that the tv shuts down everything input and output.

have you replaced the lamp yet, if so, did things go back to normal?

Hi Solar,

Yes, since changing the lamp things have gone back to normal; thanks so much for replying.

However, I had another question/issue about the lamp and TV since the new one went in (regarding the break-in period for the bulb)...did you see that thread?
