Hey Pirate!

I have checked out your gallery before -- I absolutely love the way you did a dedicated space with theater seating and chose to use a TV set as the primary display for the room! That 70" set looks amazing with your lights down...there's another member on here who has that "lodge" theme with the same display as you (I think) and he flush mounted the TV into the wall -- absolutely amazing looking.

I too have a Sony SXRD but it's a 50" model, and we're looking to step up to a 70" screen of some kind at some point...do you feel the 70" is immersive for film watching? I know there were a couple of people who commented in your gallery and said that you should have gone with a projector/screen setup, but I think your room looks great -- plenty theatrical when the lights are down.

I wish Sony still made a 70" SXRD; I'd replace ours with it if they did...

Thanks for the kind comments. My eyes are about 9.5 feet from the screen and it looks great. For me, it is about the same effect as sitting about half way back in a theater. I choose the SXRD because I was not 100 percent sold on the PQ of a projector six years ago. Of course, they are much better now. From what I have learned, my room can accommodate about a 110 inch screen when I do go to a projector... of course that may be awhile, I am still using the original bulb, and the 70" Sony came with a replacement bulb, which I still have... so I am thinking it will be a good TV for several more years at the least. Thanks again.

You're still on your SXRD's ORIGINAL BULB?!?

Wow. I got about three years out of my original...

I seriously don't think you even need a front projector setup in your room -- those screen shots in the dark look cinematic to me. Further, let me ask you this...you are sitting closer to your 70" than we would be in our room...we are going to be 12 feet from the screen and can't go any closer in our living room setup. Do you think a 70" will be "immersive" enough, especially coming from a 50"?

I think you would be immersive enough with a 70 inch. The back row in my theater room is about 12 feet from the screen and the PQ looks great. I can tell you this... I would much rather watch a movie at home than in the theater... the sound is better, and the PQ is outstanding. I have been most pleased with the Sony SXRD, and I still believe it looks as good as most anything on the market today. And yes, I am still on the original bulb. We usually only watch movies and football in the theater room, and sometimes we watch regular tv stuff in there, but we mostly watch our tv shows in our living room, where we have a 46 inch flat panel Sony. We also have a 40 inch flat panel Sony in the bedroom, so the 70 inch does not get all of the viewing. I have also been more than pleased with the SVS speakers. They Rock!!

Thanks for your thoughts here; do you think going from the 50 to a 70 would yield an immediately noticeable improvement in terms of immersiveness when watching film?

Absolutely!!

It would be like moving from the last row in the theater to somewhere near the front.

Hey Todd,

I have that same "MOVIE NIGHT" wall art! We keep it on a stand though on a shelf in our HT; bought it at Pier One...

i have a Philips 50in DLP
sadly, the lamp has burnt out and after spending nearly 2 hours on it tonight i swapped out a bulb to no avail

i've had it since 2007 so i'm thinking it might just be cheaper to get a new tv than it would be to have it repaired

Canada Still lovin' my CRT :)

Thought I'd resurrect this thread just for the heck of it, and to let anyone accidentally stumbling onto this thread know that I still have a decade-old CRT(!) RPTV that's still goin' strong. Originally paid a hefty $5,200+tx (Cdn) for it back in 04', so I've decided that -- darn it, I'm going to continue using it til' it expires, or no longer has a satisfactory picture. It was a highly-regarded top of the line Hitachi 65" TWX. It's a massive 319 lbs, and detaches into two pieces for transporting. I use it regularly for HDTV, BD, and Netflix viewing (1080i/720p); in addition to my 140" front pj setup, which I'll upgrade to 4K in Q4 of 2015, when 4K blu-ray discs will supposedly roll out. In any case, the Hitachi's pic quality is still very bright, contrasty, and generally impressive. Below is a stock pic of the TWX for illustrative purposes. Thnx for stopping by, Matt.

1080i CRT rear projectors can still be very capable.

My mom and sister live next door to each other and my mom has a huge garage and several years ago I picked up a couple used Sony WS510s (one 57, one 65) that are both still going strong.

They're both great for sports and the 65 is surprisingly serviceable for BD viewing.
