That's why I keep a spare bulb in my media cabinet. I got my Sony for Christmas in 2006, and I have not had to change a bulb yet. When I need to change the bulb, I'll be ready with the new one in hand. A little preparation goes a long way.

LOL..... that's when I move my guests out of my main viewing room where the DLP is... and send them to my game room or bedroom where I have LCD's..... and I just say to them "sorry the picture quality won't be quite as good but at least it's still in HD." Then I kick myself because I wasn't smart enough to keep an extra on hand even though I knew that just like any other bulb it could and would eventually blow completely without notice.

Here is a man that researched DLP, here is a man that decided it was worth the hassle, here is a man that made a wise decision.

For All people looking into getting a DLP, ask yourself this question:

Are you willing to go through the hassle of replacing bulbs and knowing that the bulbs can be around $250 to replace?

If you answer yes, then go ahead and buy the TV, if your answer is No, then don't buy it.

simple as that.

let me say this, do you have any idea how many 25" zenith console tv's are still working? they are at least what, 25 year old tv's? and i had to replace the bulb on this tv 14 months later? at $250 a bulb? all i can say is i will no longer be purchasing any of their products.

every so often i keep getting the amber light signal, and a message on screen that something is blocking the intake vent. i have never been so pissed in my life, when i first bought this tv i raved about it. the picture quality was awesome. my friends and family were impressed. but no more Mitsubishi for me.
one of my coworkers asked for advice, i told him mitsubishi dlp was the way to go, he bought a 50" dlp. guess what? not even ayear after he had his he had to replace his bulb. but it was under warranty so he got new bulb replacement for free. this kind of coincedence with their bulbs is a little upsetting to say the least.
i really find it hard to believe that i have to pay $250 a year to watch tv( replacing freakin bulbs) when there are litterally thousands of people with their trusty 25" console tv's still working after 25 years or more......

so no thank you mitsubishi, anyone reading this and contemplating getting one of their tv's, better rethink their decision,

feel free to contact me
its still a better product then most hdtvs i'm still looking for led dlp or laser

Default DLP's not bad but not making any progress

I Own a 57 inch mitsubishi 1080p DLP that was manufactured in 2006 and bought in January 2007. The picture is great when watching blurays or DVDs but not so good on standard digital cable. Even the so called high def channels look soft. Not to say that they suck but for what is available now for the price I paid two years ago I would go with a LCD or Plasma, depending on my budget.
I paid $1,900 before tax. 2 years later you can get a 60 inch mitsubishi for less then $1,500. If you want a larger screen for a reasonable price, DLP is the way to go but if you want insane clarity and lifelike motion I would pay the extra $500-$1000 and go with a nice LCD or maybe a Plasma if you can find a good deal. Oh yeah, sports look like shit on my model. I don't know if other people have this problem but, the lines on football fields and basketball courts have this choppy flashy effect when there is camera movement......which is almost constant so, just another thing to keep in mind.
I had to replace the bulb after 11 months. Luckily I just made it under the manufacturers warranty! I have had my current bulb for exactly one year so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I did hear a salesman at a local home theatre store say that DLPs are more efficient then other TV's and the amount of money you save on electricity is more then the cost of the bulb replacement. I don't know if this is true or if he is just blowing smoke up peoples ass to make a sale. so to sum it up, TV broadcasts vary from fair to good, DVDs look good, and Blurays including PS3 games look great but, they don't reach their peak performance on a DLP.

I love my 60'' Mitsu. usually the first bulb doesn't last very long considering the TV has been been transported all over hells half acre, bumped banged, tipped. who knows what that TV went through from the factory all the way to your living room. This TV is 10x better than my garbage 42'' Samsung plasma. BTW i paid $900 for the Mitsu and $1,900 for the Samsung

Ah its no hidden secret about the bulbs. That is why I bought the extended warranty for three years cost me $200 and with that I ordered 4 bulbs and only used one so far. The contract allows me 6 bulbs so I planned ahead. Don't go bashing Mits since its the same with all the DLPS and with contract you are covered.

And as far as my 32 inch 32 that is over ten years old yes it is still working but the picture stinks wen compared next to the DLP. Also as far as some people saying that DLP is dying a slow death my response to that is all technology is dying a slow death but some faster than others. To say that DLP will be gone in the near or distant future is only guess work on the side of the consumer.

I think you have some other problem that is causing the bulb to fail. Removing the back is never a good idea. My Mits rocks and I only replaced the bulb when the message said to and that was after a year and a half of using the set every day for at least four hours. Did you ever think that the set just may be bad. Its sad but that does happen. Kind of like a car you can get a bad one of those two. Maybe that why they made a lemon law for cars. Sometimes problems happen be it in transit, storage or what ever. teh problem does suck but not the fault of Mits have you ever tried calling their support they are excellent.

Yes, the picture this thing put outs is incredible, Discovery HD is by far the best channel, my brother said it looks like an aquarium.
but i am becoming more frustrated with this thing, i even removed the back of the set which worked at the tiime, but every once in a while it keeps giving me the tv gonna shut down message. so i shut it off and use a can of air and spray the back of the set, which works.
again, i am just getting frustrated with this thing

oh, and Theokbadguy, the replacement bulb is $250, not $100

Changing the bulb is only a ten minute job,.....it comes out in a cartridge under a panel in the back,.....the problem with the early Mitsu's was not the bulb,...it was the cartridge the bulb was mounted in. The vent holes were too small,...and they got clogged with dirt and dust,...thus overheating the bulb.

I keep a spare bulb,...bought from an aftermarket supplier,.... like DLPLamps.com. It cost $115.00. When I talked to Mitsu after the first bulb blew,....they sent an "updated cartridge",...with larger vent holes,.....= more air flow,...no more overheat. The "bulb" guys usually send a pair of gloves with the new bulb,....they are just like Halogen headlights,.....finger oil = premature failure.

I've owned Mitsubishi's since they first came out with "Big Screens",....and haven't found a better TV yet. I gave my last SD RP to a friend,....and it's still going strong.

You'll never get an LCD with a picture like a DLP.

BTW,......LCD's have bulbs too. And like ALL bulbs,....a steady burn is better than numerous on/off cycles. When I turn mine on for the first time during the day,....it is on until I turn it off to go to bed at night.

BTW

Did you check with Mitsubishi,....they should have told they had a recall for just this problem,......it was being caused by a loose connection,.... the repair was FREE,....and the warranty on those sets was extended for two ADDITIONAL years beyond the usual one year limited warranty.

I have a 73" Mitsubishi 1080p DLP. I purchased it about 6 months ago. I have not had any problems with it. I purchased the extended warranty, just is case I had a problem. I think it would be a good ideal to keep a spare lamp handy. I also keep the vent holes clear of dust, this should help the lamp last longer. With rear projection, you get a lot of "bang for your buck." That is why I bought mine.

I had a weird experience with a 55" Mitsubishi DLP. After having three Fry's sales guys assure me it was the best deal on the market (two of them even had cell phone photos of their own setups at home), I went ahead and bought one. Once I got it home, however, I noticed a weird high pitched sound coming from the set. Not too loud (my wife was telling me I was crazy), but I did find it distracting and after a while I was sure it was giving me a headache. I had the unit replaced and was quite depressed to discover that the second one was even louder! I ended up getting a Sony instead and couldn't be happier. Despite my over sensitive ears, I will say that the pic on the Mitsubishi was fantastic.

hey everyone, it's me, the OP lol

ok, an update, after reading Shooters post, this is what i did. i am getting a new Mitsubishi DLP, the 73835, because i am doing this for the 3D Vision thing from Nvidia, so i gave my 65" to my son, but not before pulling the cartridge out and decided to poke a whole bunch of wholes through the mesh on the side and bottom. I explained to my son everything, he totally understood, he has had it about a week now and so far, no message like i was getting, lol. go figure, that 65" is a 2006 model, so not compatible with the 3D glasses.
and by the way, it was a tight fit in a Jeep Liberty, their knees were at their chins driving lol, and he lives 3 hours from me.
i dont get the new tv til march 17, i cant find any place around here that has it at all............
i will give a new review then about the tv and the 3D thing, til then, sorry about the venting, but you have no idea what i was going through.
one more thing, to help with the dust thing, i am considering getting one of those Ion air cleaners and put it right next to the new tv lol.
everyone, thanx for posting, good reads all..................

those ion air filters are JUNK. i have been watching the ventilation issue. i was thinking about making the vent larger, and putting some kind of filter on it, like grill cloth, or something. that would catch nearly all the dust and no air restriction.
