Default Question for JL Audio Fathom f110 and f112 owners

For the owners of these subs, what size rooms do you have them in?

I have the F113 - in a living room, half of the left wall open to another area (towards the rear). Roughly 24 feet by 26 feet, with a very high sloped ceiling, sloping upward from right to left.

The F113 fills it nicely, I couldn't use anything smaller. I have a huge problem with sub placement - still haven't figured out where to put the sub, and I have room gain problems due to the sloping ceiling and open side.

In one corner - right side rear - there is so much boost that your ribs rattle. Eight feet away, it's just smooth, not skull-busting. I have no idea how to get the propagation evened out, and I'm sure not going to buy another Fathom...unless I win the lottery. Then I'll buy a bunch of them.

Here's the thing: I think one of the smaller Fathoms would have worked as well, if I could find out where to place it. Not that I'm sending this one back.

It hits hard, without effort, and is incredibly smooth, being a sealed unit. I'd stay with a 12 or 13, unless it was a very small area.

Default Noticed you have a Harmony 1100

What do you think of the Harmony 1100? I have to replace my old Sony Remote Commander...

Thanks for that. I'm really eyeing the f112. I've demoed it many times, and I can get it for a fairly reasonable price. I like my Rel T2, it's a great bang for the buck sub and one that would keep most people happy, but it's time I upgrade, might as well do it right and proper.

The Harmony 1100 is great, no issues whatsoever. If it were my money, i'd get a harmony one, cheaper and does what it's supposed to, but the 1100 was a gift, so who am I to complain?

I cannot comment yet, but I have 2 F112's that should be installed in my theater within the next 5-8 business days. They will be in a 16 x 25 x 9 room, and I expect them to be total overkill.

Overkill?!? Yikes! The forbidden word! We at Blu-ray.com do not acknowledge overkill as an absolute and we cannot take it as such; therefore overkill does not exist.

For the price of it, get a Universal Remotes MX 900 or 950 and pay for the programming. It will work flawlessly and you will be much happier. I would never pay $500 for a harmony remote, because they are self programmable and always faulty to some extent (whether user based or manufacturer based.)

If you can snag a deal on the f112, do it and don't look back. The more I think about it, maybe even the F110 would do the job; these units have just ridiculously high output, and it's clean, which is what I need.

On the Harmony, it's got big time cool guy factor, but I need the remote extender - Amazon is bundling that stuff for about $460, a whopping discount from other dealers.

It doesn't?

What a relief...now I can go get more stuff.

WHAT??? You're not thinking about switching parties are you? Why not consider a REL B2 or B1?

While the Rel B1 and B2 are great subs, the fathom line is better imo.

My two F112's were installed on Wednesday. They are amazing (for music too). The telling thing is that they "get out of the way", but when needed...oh man. The whole room shakes. Clean and tight.

I feel like for the first time in my life I am hearing and feeling bass the way it was meant to be...

It truly is ridiculous. The level on these things is set (i.e. matched to mains) at -10db on my pre-amp, yet I still get massive earthquake style "shockwaves" across the floor and couch. They aren't even breaking a sweat, and there is no heat on the heatsinks in the back. Given what I am currently hearing with these things integrated into my system, it is truly incomprehensible what these things may even be capable of. I would bet I am using 1/3 to 1/2 of the output capability.

This is the first time I've ever used two subs. For the first time the bass is truly smooth & integrated, with no ability to locate where the subs are positioned.

I cannot recommend these subs enough. Even one F112 would more than do the trick.

Man, the f112 is serious business. I just watched 3:10 to Yuma again last night, and when the trained pulled into the station, it literally felt like I got run over. I don't even know how people are running dual fathoms and gothams. Their space must be massive. Master & Commander was something else. It did not even break a sweat. Despite the relatively tight build, this is one heavy ass sub. I'm no pencilneck, but I needed help bringing in the box to the living room. Do not attempt to do this alone, you're just asking for problems and future chiropractor visits.

Music has been kicked up a notch. Deep, clean bass. I love it. I listened to an Art Blakey SACD, and you can't wipe the smile off my damn face. This has to be one of the best purchases I've ever made. Worth every penny.
