With all the blu-ray discounts and buy 1 get 1 sales next week, Transformers will be a blip in the high def media market.

i strongly think Blu will win, i mean with all these promo's and everyone that held out for this day. Lets say Mostly 80% of hd dvd guys buy transformers, and since its the only got title that day that 1 sale per person, in our side, we are getting b1g1, at least so for every trnf sold we buy 2 titles, still 2:1 advantage, plus there are some other that are buying more than 2 titles, (5 for me), i was a little worried about braging right for one week going to them, but now i feel very positive, their 150 Mill dollar deal will be worthless!!!!.

If Transformers sells 100k units, then they will probably win the week.

Since no title has sold 100k units in a week on HD-DVD, that's a big if.

Of course, it's hard to say. Even during the week Knocked Up was released, where Blu-Ray had basically nothing of note on the pile that hadn't been out for several weeks, Blu-Ray sold 60k+ Blus, based on the number of titles announced for Knocked Up sales.

Residual 28 days/weeks later + Fantastic Four should be a decent number.

Basically, I will not be surprised if HD-DVD wins the week. I will be shocked if it is greater than 60:40 in their favor however. However, I also would not be surprised if Blu-Ray eeked out a tie or minor victory either.

Even if Transformers win's the week in sales know this:

1) It would have easily sold 2:1 on BD
(more likely 3:1 given the demographic of ps3 owners)

2) IF they win that week, that will probably be the last time they ever Beat Blu-ray Ever again!

I said in another thread that if the word got out to PS3 owners that don't frequent these forums to just buy one Blu-Ray next week, then game over. And that was before I heard about the sales. Pretty much anyone that walks into a store this week looking for BR movies will walk out with two. I've held off a catalog here or there a few weeks now planning to pick them up this week, now with these sales I see myself buying a lot more than I planned. I'm easily picking up 10-12, the deals are just too good to pass up.

Transformers will do well, no doubt. Toshiba, Paramount, and Universal will be watching closely on those sales figures. If it does sell in the triple digits in the coming weeks (which I think it will), it will be a indication that the HD DVD format is alive, and a viable market. It will up the ante between the two formats. Blu ray will up their strategies to counter its populairty, as it is already attempting to do for the upcoming week. Blu Ray will still have an advantage, but the Transformers will be gauge of just how much interest there is in HD DVD.

Warner Brothers pretty much holds the future of this format war in its hands. Going BD or HD-DVD exclusive would be a nail in the coffin for either side.
Going HD-DVD exclusive would ensure we all have to go dual format, going Blu-ray exclusive would end the format war overnight.

I don't doubt Transformers will sell well, but will it be at the expense of other titles?

Plus, how often does a Transformers like movie come along, how many do Paramount and Universal have in their locker.

Far too much is being invested by HD-DVD folk in a single movie.

I'm gonna do my part to help he numbers with between 5 and 10 SKUs. PS3 owners need to get off their asses.
Sorry, I am sure you did not mean to slam us PS3 owners who have been making a big difference in this war as we have been buying just as many movies as stand alone supporters.

Hopefully your not being sucked in by the HD-DVD crowd who has said that PS3 owners "don't buy movies". We do!

I will be shocked if Blu wins Transformer week, Don't get me wrong I would love to see it, But Transformer is the best selling HD disk on Amazon and it isn't even released yet.

I believe Toshiba and the HD DVD PR Group have everything riding on the succes of Transformers. That's why it is being released so early before any of the blockbuster titles on Blu. Clearly they are hoping TF will sell 100,000+ next week and they will turn around and beat the BDA over the head with this in marketing. This is what the $150 million was for; the gamble on TF.

I think it will sell 75,000+ but it will fall short of what the zealots are hoping for.

I like the fact that BDs are on sale for a couple of days, but HD DVD is having a sale on titles as well. I think we will lose the Transformers week, because not enough people will be buying enough BDs. I can only hope I am wrong. I will do my part.

overnight is a little bit of a stretch dont ya think? I would assume that if they went exclusive, the format war would be over when the Paramount deal was over. Which is what? 14 more months or so?

I will probably buy a couple titles this week but that is it. Im goin pretty broke right now buying as many as I am...

If 80% of HD DVD owners bought Transformers in the first week it would likely sell 300k copies or more. Remember, they have the XBOX360 add-ons as well as standalones. But it won't do that much. I think it will do over 100k (although Nielsen might not count that many because while they count most of the market for these, they miss some like Wal-Mart). I think these BOGO sales have great timing to try to convince more PS3 owners to start buying some movies. I don't frequent gaming boards much, but I hope PS3 owners are being made aware of things like the BOGO deals and the awesome deal on the Planet Earth Blu-ray for $50 plus shipping at Frys/Outpost. If Blu-ray doesn't win the week, it would still be good if they showed a good ratio for some other titles, like PE.

After transformers there is Shrek 2, then it runs dry. I know not many parents would buy an HD-DVD player just so their little kids can watch shrek. HD-DVD is banking everything on the Transformers release. It will do well mark my words. We can help snuff HD-DVD's win ratio by buying 2+ BDs on Transformers release week as many others have already said in this thread. I guess it depends on how many people are aware of the war.

Shrek 3, not 2.

2+??? I'm thinking 10+, I've been saving some of my purchases for this week. (I was thinking 5+ but with the BOGO everywhere the count just doubled. )

enjoy
