Germany From the ashes: Turbine to start releasing 3D blu-ray

Turbine (a German label) today announced they will be joining the 3D blu-ray game, taking up the mantle from RSM (RIP).

Their first three titles will be titles RSM themselves have put out (Jurassic World 3, Minions: Rise of Gru, The Bad Guys) except we can expect German audio to be included with them too.

They seem to be actively saying they are taking up the mantle from RSM!

One thing to keep in mind is that they only seem to have a relationship with Universal Studios (correct me if I'm wrong, anybody). I'm not even sure if Universal are bundled with Sony in Germany like they are in Australia, which was how we got Sony titles like No Way Home from RSM. I'm pretty sure Sony Germany are their own entity, so you will probably not be seeing any Sony 3D titles through Turbine sadly.

So the real question is, are they just being allowed to use the home masters USPHE in Australia made for RSM, or are they going to be able to release anything new? Time will tell!

There has only been one Sony 3D title in the last few years, right? No Way Home. So if Sony continues to not produce 3D films, we’re not missing out on any 3D Blu-rays. Even if Turbine only has a deal with Universal, they can license 3D titles from Dreamworks, Illumination, and Universal Studios.

Yes, but there are still unreleased 3D titles from Sony like Alpha that it would still be nice to see on 3D blu-ray. Additionally, if the next Sony Spidey movie is in 3D, a label like RSM would have been our only chance for a home disc.

The owner of Turbine has answered a few questions on facebook, including signalling their hope to bring atmos audio to their 3D releases (but this is obviously no guarantee that will happen). That being said, they do seem to be successful bringing atmos audio and Auro 3D to their current releases, so it looks like they have experience and some pull in that department!

No one knows what they can or cannot release other than the 3 titles that were "announced" for 2024 on their FB post.

Excellent news!!! Do you think they’ll get Boss Baby: Family Business or Hotel Transylvania 3?

Boss Baby 2 got already a wide Blu-ray 3D release in Germany/ MOD in USA. Guess it was the only non 3D Blu-ray premiere from RSM. HT3 is Sony. Might be possible to licence that if they want to, because its already out. Its more interesting if there will be some 3D Blu-ray world premieres from Turbine In the near future.

If Turbine had those capabilities this entire time, why only spring into action now after some unrelated Australian distributor goes out of business? They could have been releasing 3D product for years then and just chose not too?

And of course every 3D release is dependent on studio delivered assets and approval and for the most part they've actively prevented home 3D releases.
My thoughts:

It's a fantastic piece of PR for them.

The vanishingly small 3d market may not have supported two distributors with the same product. It looks like it wasn't big enough to support one. Turbine may have felt there was no need to step in before. Now they have their opening.

It makes sense from a distribution standpoint to move to a region where there are more 3d fans and more physical media fans.

Agglomeration in Germany (seen as something of a bastion of 3d support) may sway licensor decisions. With Plaion/Koch still likely to produce the odd random Asian rabbit out of the hat and a semi-confirmed release of Anshelm the market still has a heartbeat there.

Mario and Puss are likely back on, though delayed to 2024.

One thing I do wonder about is how many people will be double-dipping on these just to support Turbine. If Turbine was able to make good on their comments to look into adding object-based audio (i.e. Atmos) into the movies, that would certainly be enticing to those people who are unable to remux them in. It would also be nice if they had bilingual menus in place just like their website as I realize that their market is primarily targeted at Germany, but they sometimes release so many different versions of a single movie (with different cover art and such) that it would be nice if they could have a more universal release for those who are ordering internationally. Just a thought.

I wonder if they’ll re-release Sing 2 with the missing text, but this time in german. Also, I hope for the atmos track to be added back. It was always strange buying the RSM titles without the atmos track in the 3D disc, when Universal was the only studio still doing 3D with atmos before they stopped internationally.
I ended up never buying these last 4 titles from them because of the no shipping from Australia to my country, so I’m hopeful of Turbine stepping into their shoes. And being able to order from Germany and not have to worry about customs is a delight.

No double dipping for me. Bought all of the RSM titles already so there is no point to buy again for German audio or atmos (I only have 5.1). But if they ever release somehthing new - I suppose in the distant future after they make their money doing German versions of the RSM releases, I would be a buyer.

If Turbine release the movies with european portuguese dub and subtitles I'll buy them again and possibly sell the ones I have from RSM. If these are the same as RSM and only add German dubbing and subtitles I'll skip as I'm not interested in that.

Guy has a hard on for Auro 3D, too bad it is pretty much DEAD as a format! he should've mentioned not all were roses for the launch of the online shop 3 years ago, the American werewolf in London Box debacle comes to mind. Anyways, i hope universal allows him to release some unreleased 3D titles, the current ones Turbine is getting now 99% of us here already got it, i don't see many if at all double dips other than for the German folks.

Well. That's great news, if they the release the right titles (already getting Jurasssic Park in a different way though). I'm especially happy that it's in Europe, as I really hate having to pay a customs fine for daring to buy something that never was available to buy here. Also the not having to pay postage twice for having it first sent to a friend, who then sends it to me.
