Default Grain & artifacts in modern movies

How do movies made recently treat grain or similar effects? Is it regularly added or removed? The natural purity of studio grade digital cinematography might be off-putting to audiences for certain genres. Period films, b-movie style horror, etc.

The Walking Dead has some serious grain if you watch it on Blu-ray. I don't notice it as much on TV but it sticks out like a sore thumb on Blu-ray.

"The Walking Dead is shot on a 16mm film, instead of a 32mm one, which adds a grainy look immediately. "

i thought that was on purpose, though. i may be mistaken, but i thought i heard (or read) somewhere that the producers do that to give the show a "dirty" feel to it...much how the world is on the show.

Grindhouse added a ton of artificial grain, bad splices, reel-change markers and the like (despite Planet Terror being shot digitally).

That could be the case. I vaguely remember jayman mentioning this a while back.
