I've been waiting a long time for this news. The Tree of Life is already early favorite for the best film of the decade, so this coming now 7-8 years after the release, it's time. I just watched it for the first time in a while a few weeks ago after watching 2001... not only does it hold up to time, but also to Kubrick's masterpiece as a nice double feature.

I hope the theatrical cut gets released as well with it for completist sake.

What I would want to know is if Criterion will be allowed access to only this new extended cut of ToL or will the original Director's Cut be also included in their release?

From the Variety article:
Quote:
“Terry doesn’t see this as a director’s cut,” says Criterion president Peter Becker, who insists that the 139-minute theatrical version is the official “director’s cut” and remains the centerpiece of the Blu-Ray edition. “It’s a fresh view of the film that has a different rhythm and a different balance.

You must have missed the group announcement we did just recently that all film is now subjective. This is a brand new concept that will take some time to catch on, don’t worry Ryandj you will get there if you just keep working at it.

Don't think it's the best (need to rewatch it), but I think I have it at [EDIT: #2].

Haven't seen many films from 2010 and onwards but I wouldn't have The Tree of Life at the top out of the few I've seen. I'd rank films like Boyhood, Nightcrawler,
The Witch, Inherent Vice and Killer Joe higher than The Tree of Life which is a good film but doesn't deserve the comparisons to masterworks such as Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and the like.

However, I'm still very interested to see what new footage will be included in this upcoming cut of the film.

Put me in a straight jacket then. This is my third favorite film of all time. The top 2 are from the 70s so yes, this is the best film of the decade so far.

I can't comment myself, as I've yet to watch it, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Has anyone found a review that actually talks about the differences between the Extended and Theatrical. The review on this site and also from The Digital Bits are written as if the reviewer never even watched the Extended version, just mentions that it is a "special feature".

These reviews are such non ‘reviews’ if they don’t even discussing anything about the content of the extended version. Even just a few sentences would be useful.

I picked up a copy of the extended cut of the film over the weekend, I have only seen the first hour. and yes I have seen the theatre version when it first came out.

while it has been a while since I watched(theatre) it. two things that I notice.
the pacing was much better. if you were bored or uneasy with the theatre version.. you might enjoyed this one more.
and 2: this is very much like a new movie. so beautiful to watch.
I felt more connected to it then the theatre version.. some people who like the lord of the rings extended cuts more the theatre versions. Its that great.
