Welcome to the new John Wayne on Blu-ray thread. The old thread has been Archived, and can be found here. Below you will find a complete list of movies starring John Wayne that are available on Blu-ray. The list will focus primarily on U.S. releases, unless one isn't available. It will be ordered by year, and broken up into decade chunks. I will also be adding an A-Z list for easy sorting. If there are any I've missed, please feel free to point them out, and I will add it as soon as possible. Thanks!

Cecil B DeMille's, Reap The Wild Wind (1942). In many ways not a typical Wayne film, as he plays a bit of a weak character, which just doesn't work with the Duke, but an enjoyable & fun movie. The thing is, it's been on TV in the UK in HD looking absolutely stunning, I mean wow! I hope Universal releases it on Blu-ray, & while they're at it also release Unconquered (1947), if the DVD is anything to go by, it looks just as good. In fact Universal has done some amazing work with their 40's Technicolor films.

Where or where is Donovan's Reef? One of my favorite Wayne movies with the bonus of Lee Marvin co-staring and under the direction of John Ford. C'mon Paramount!

Great job Mifunefan, updating this thread. I believe I have everyone available, with the exception of Hatari. The screen shots for that release looks absolutely dreadful.

Thank you for this post! I am just discovering John Wayne, and enjoy almost everything I see him in.
I know you've already put a lot of work into this thread, but could you include at the bottom of each decade post, remaining titles that have not yet received the Blu treatment in that Decade? |

Couple of my own personal opinions on Duke's current output on BD:
1) Olive Films did a great job on almost every release they put out. Special shout out to "Angel And The Badman". For a PD title, they sourced a very good print to release onto HD. Wish they would go back and rescue more of his films from PD hell. Must be at least dozen more 1930-era movies they could remaster. 2) "Hondo". So used to seeing this in 1.33:1 ratio. I know the lens frame used was 1.78:1, but it's disappointing to lose picture information off the top and bottom, that use to be there. I wish Paramount would have just given us both options in the release. 3) "Rio Bravo". Waiting for a re-mastered version. Not happy with the current release. Too much grain in the image, needs to be cleaned up somewhat. 4) "El Dorado" and "The War Wagon". Two of the best transfers in the entire bunch! A visual pleasure to sit thru these two films in HD. Almost like seeing them for the first time. 5) Lastly, when is Paramount going to release the rest of their 1960-70 catalog? Some of Duke's finest films are from this period in time, like "The Sons Of Katie Elder" and "The Shootist". Like I said, these are my own personal feelings. You may feel completely opposite… ![]() |
