A Lady Takes a Chance (1943) with optional English subtitles

Screen legends Jean Arthur (The More the Merrier, A Foreign Affair) and John Wayne (Rio Bravo, Brannigan) co-star in this romantic comedy western directed by Hollywood veteran William A. Seiter (You Were Never Lovelier). Finding men had never been a problem for city girl Molly Truesdale (Arthur); finding the right man is another matter. And women have never been a problem for cowboy bachelor Duke Hudkins (Wayne), until they want to marry him. If it's true that opposites attract, these two are obviously made for each other. When Molly sets out from New York on a cross-country bus tour, she just wants to see America. But her plans take an unexpected turn out West, when she collides (literally!) with Duke while he's competing at the rodeo. He assumes she's just another pretty gal who'll fall into his arms, but she's a lady who won't be roped easily by a brawling, rough-and-ready cowboy. Jean Arthur shows the spunk that made her one of the biggest stars of Hollywood's Golden Era, and John Wayne is at his most charming when he falls for her against his better judgment. Charles Winninger (Nothing Sacred), Grant Withers (Trigger, Jr.) and comedy legend Phil Silvers (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) co-star in this truly classic romantic comedy.

So what's the chance we get the 1947 technicolor "Tycoon" released? Extremely underrated John Wayne film that would look great in high def!

I think Vince McMahon's entrance theme says it all.

Not sure what they have for the standard release but I heard they let the roadshow version rot to pieces. Absolutely maddening.

The difference in framing is quite significant

Speaking of Jet Pilot, the German disk plays fine on my PS4. So, it's not locked.

Apple TV HD for me in the interim. The first John Wayne film I ever saw. In the theater over 40 years ago.

Can you tell me the aspect ratio on the German BD? The film was made in '49, but not released to theaters till '57. The proper framing should be 1-1:33

Ah. There aren't any vertical black bars.

Thanks...guess I'll continue to hold onto my laserdisc, as it's the only release with the proper framing of the film.

For this film, it could be debated that no specific aspect ratio can claimed to be perfectly correct. While the original take in 1949 may have been 1.33, the re-shot segments much later (around 1955) to inject newer aerial footage, as well as even new shots with Wayne and Leigh could very well have been composed with wide-screen in mind per Hughes direction at the time. It would be interesting to see the 1949 version against the final 1957 release to see how the project evolved over that time period.

Blood Alley and The Sea Chase (1955) are on a double-feature bluray in the USA and individual blurays (region free) in the UK.

France are releasing Cecil B DeMille's, Reap The Wild Wind (1942) on September 25th. It's a very entertaining & colourful adventure, but there is a slight problem with Wayne in it, as he's not the hero & he plays a bit of a weak character (but he comes good at the end), & it doesn't quite work with the Duke, I think he has to be the hero, but it's a fun film.
