Kino has just announced two John Wayne titles coming out November 3rd.

Quote:
SEVEN SINNERS (1940)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian David Del Valle
• Theatrical Trailer
• Optional English Subtitles

B&W 87 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Marlene Dietrich (Desire) stars opposite John Wayne (Rio Bravo) as sexy saloon singer Bijou Blanche, who’s as quick with a comeback as she is with a come-on, in Seven Sinners. Deported from every South Sea island on which she has ever performed, Bijou winds up in Boni Komba at the Seven Sinners Café, convincing the manager that she will break only hearts, not bar stools. Bijou soon charms a handsome Navy officer (Wayne), who falls deeply in love with the woman his superiors refer to as a naval destroyer. When a spiteful admirer of Bijou’s resorts to violence to keep the lovers apart, the glamorous chanteuse proves she will do anything—especially the unexpected—for the man she loves. Dietrich sizzles on screen singing her trademark, husky renditions of “I’ve Been in Love Before” and “The Man’s in the Navy” in this sultry tropical romance. Directed by Tay Garnett (Bataan) and featuring wonderful supporting performances by Albert Dekker (Dr. Cyclops), Broderick Crawford (Born Yesterday), Anna Lee (The Crimson Kimono), Mischa Auer (My Man Godfrey), Billy Gilbert (The Great Dictator), Oskar Homolka (Ball of Fire) and Reginald Denny (Skinner’s Dress Suit).

THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS (1941)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Critic and Author Simon Abrams
• Theatrical Trailer
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 98 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
From Henry Hathaway, the acclaimed director of The House on 92nd Street, Kiss of Death, Rawhide, Niagara, Legend of the Lost, The Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit, comes this classic adventure yarn starring screen legend John Wayne (Red River, The Searchers, Brannigan, The Shootist) as Young Matt Mathews, a hillbilly moonshiner. Burdened from boyhood by a family tragedy, Matt’s life is driven by the need to avenge his mother’s abandonment by an uncaring father. The stern family matriarch Granny Becky (Marjorie Main, Murder, He Says), in the absence of both parents, has taken over the leadership duties for the extended family of moonshiners. The arrival of a stranger (Harry Carey, Hell Bent) is cause for alarm in this small community whose main source of revenue is illegal corn whiskey. This stranger, a quiet older man, has healing ways that begin to alter the face of the community. Rejected by the locals, he is befriended by Matt’s pretty barefoot girlfriend (Betty Field, The Great Gatsby) who learns the secret of his healing powers and the curse of vengeance that torments the man she loves. The heated confrontation between the two men leads to a startling climax that threatens to tear the town apart. The stellar cast includes Beulah Bondi (The Good Fairy), Ward Bond (Canyon Passage) and Marc Lawrence (I Walk Alone).[/FONT]

As soon as they pop up for pre-order on Amazon, I'm getting them both.

Seven Sinners is my most awaited title from the Universal deal.

If you’re not loyal to amazon, Seven Sinners is already up for pre-order on the KL website.

Also, Bullmoose has better prices than Amazon, have free shipping for $30 or more, don't charge sales tax unless you're in Maine, and I always have my pre-orders a day before release date. And have a customer point reward system. It's nice to help out small businesses when you can. Especially ones as good as Bullmoose.

I have Prime, that's why I prefer Amazon. Plus I use my Amazon Store Card to get bonus points.

Oh nice, I missed that one.

Also as the list gets bigger, I've decided to split the 1940's-1950's section in two for each respective decade.

DVDCompare lists a John Wayne at War DVD set from Universal in the UK, with a half hour interview with Patrick Wayne. So is that on the main feature discs? Or is it a bonus disc?

The Out West set apparently includes the 45 minute 1992 Young Duke documentary, only otherwise available on VHS.

Universal also issued a 34 film set, John Wayne: The Collection, which “ includes additional 2 interviews (with Harry Carey Jr. and Peter Bogdanovich) and 2 documentaries by Leonard Maltin. It has also additional films in "Bonus set".

Universal seems to have released quite a few Republic Pictures titles on UK DVDs back in the day, e.g. Johnny Guitar, Indiscreet, It’s a Wonderful Life, Creepshow.

Last night I saw Wake of the Red Witch for the first time and really enjoyed it. I know there's a Blu-ray from Olive released in 2013, but I read that the film was given a new restoration just in 2018. Anybody think it might get a re-release from another label using this new restored print? I don't know who owns it, but I saw that Paramount was involved in the restoration, so I wonder if it would have to come from them.

I have two questions:
1) Are all his films available on DVD, at least?
2) Were any only ever aired on TV without a DVD/BD release?

1) Off the top of my head, I can only think of 7 titles of his that have not been released on DVD or Blu. All from the 30's. 3 of those are supposedly lost.

2) This I do not know.

Hey Itb2.0, I see you have the Koch blu of The Conqueror. I have been thinking about getting it since it is cheap and has an 18 minute extra. Are you happy with the PQ and the extra? Thanks in advance...

I actually haven't watched it in a while. I'll give you my quick impressions. It's nothing spectacular, but it's a nice step up from the Universal DVD and as long as you keep your expectations in check, you'll most likely be content with the transfer.

As I did before I purchase most imports, I did a fair bit of research and was satisfied that the German release was the best option. When it comes to technical details and finer points of PQ analysis, I'm rather clueless. So take this with a grain of salt.

What sold me on it the most however was the comparisons at Caps-a-Holic .

I have zero recollection of the special feature, and I'm not certain I even knew about in the first place. I just needed the movie on Blu-Ray.

But I'll give it a spin later today, or tomorrow and get back to you.

EDIT: My Region Free player crapped out on me, so it's gonna take me a little bit longer to get back to you. This disc is region B locked, so take that into consideration.

Today I got the "The Sons of the Katie Elder" blu-ray and I wasn´t impressed at all by the picture quality.

Just average.

Ha ha, no worries! Thanks for the caps. By sheer coincidence, my region free player just died on me too, last week. No matter what I put in, it says "disc not compatible". I bought a U.S. player and this time I am going to order a region 2 player since that is the only other region I collect. I am going to just order The Conqueror since the price is right. Thanks for all your help!

Mine simply refuses to power up. It played discs just fine, but is refusing to power up. I'm probably just gonna order a region B player and call it good, I've never once needed to switch over to C.

I'm glad my scant help was appreciated. Just sorry I wasn't more informative this go around.

As it stands right now, there are only 4 John Wayne titles you need a region B player for. Though I think I'm overlooking one..

Jet Pilot
The Conqueror
Circus World
The Shootist.

The other Blu-Ray releases are region A compatible.

I can confirm this one is region A compatible...

This one however, is definitely locked. This is the blu that inspired me to go region free years ago....
