Wow there's never been a Wilson thread... But I'm kinda not surprised since most people on this site don't stray into the higher end world of speakers.

I've never heard krell, but I have heard the Sophia, sasha and maxx3s, also the duettes. Good speakers.

Wow,nice gear.. I love the blue wall,the gear looks really good against it. I've never heard the Wilson's. How do they sound compared to the vienna's?

The Vienna Acoustics are a great speaker for their price point. The Wilson's are in a different league with tonal characteristics, dynamics, detail, and a huge soundstage.

Interesting review of the Alexandria XLF. Take note of the measurements section. It's horrific for a $2,000 pair of speakers, let alone one an order of magnitude higher in price. Also take note of the low frequency response...starts to roll off at 50Hz.

How do you like your Sophias?

I'd heard the XLF's and heard them easily go to 20Hz and lower. They were ran with D'Agostino Momentums and they were going down to 18Hz with a test disc to the point it was causing the projector screen on the wall to shake. So I'd be interested in knowing what kind of room they were doing the measurements in.

As for my Sophia's. I love them. Easily the best speaker I've owned so far. But I am pining for the Alexia's now... just have to get the funds.

Well, with bass response being a function of driver size and number, and cabinet volume, I've talked with a number of audio engineers who weren't surprised by the 50Hz quote. A room mode might have contributed to the screen shaking, and room modes are usually somewhere from 40-70Hz or so. Fun fact, the XLF's bass drivers are Focal car subwoofers.

Regardless, the Sophias, I've heard a pair of Series 3s. They're supposed to be the best fundamental speaker that Wilson has ever made. Glad you like them.

I tried to start a Thread with PBN Montana Speakers.....it seems that nobody on this site has had any experience. I doubt anyone here owns a pair of Wilson's, but I could be wrong. Good Luck. Try Audiogon...it will sell your gear...

Let me play devil's advocate - what makes the ultra high end speakers like Wilson, Magico etc better than speakers costing far less (<$5k). Besides the looks and status. Do they measure better? From what I've read so many expensive speakers (e.g. B&W) have terrible measurements but the buyers don't really care as its all subjective.

I heard a pair of the MAXX2s more than 10 years ago at a dealer, and that experience has stuck with me. It was the deepest soundstage I've ever heard. The bass was unbelievable with a clean, tight punch that you really felt. I think they were in the $45,000 range, which is absolutely ridiculous for us 99%ers.
They were for serious critical music listening of the very few.

It's a lot more than looks and status....a speaker consists of a cabinet structure, crossover network, and of course, the drivers. The build quality of each of those 3 will determine the end result. ( that's the really short answer )

But you have a great point.....Wilson and Magico are both a tad overpriced in my opinion, but if you want serious bragging rights and top shelf performance you've got to pay. Enjoy!
