As long as we agree that the projection was based on illumination , and that the night scenes had less light, we are good. The director obviously wanted to add some contrast to his work.

The rental for this had a preview for Mulan. If that is still releasing in 3D, perhaps they will produce it with the same high quality as Maleficent.

I agree the forest night scenes could/should have used better lighting.

I also had no issues with dark scenes. They looked just fine on my set.

My projector is calibrated for 2D under one setting and then a different one for 3D movies, but usually I end up changing the 3D from film to film. I usually wait for the first dark scene, pause the film and change brightness and contrast until it looks right and that usually then sorts out how the daylight scenes should look as well.

Also if you have a bulb setting it should be set to bright instead of standard for 3D films.

What projector do you have?
I also have separate calibrations for 2D and 3D and it makes a big difference. I also do the same thing as you when the first dark scene comes up. I go to the pop-up menu on my Panasonic UB-DP820 4K/3D Blu-ray and do the tweaks necessary to get the best picture possible. The good thing about this particular Blu-ray player is that it has many different settings you can change... way beyond contrast and brightness.

Had a little mid week family movie with this one last night and we all really enjoyed it. The 3D was certainly well done and made the whole land really come alive. I think this is another fine example where the 3D made the movie for me, in that I didn't think the story was quite as good or poignant as the original but thanks to the 3D making the scenery a character in the film it became a memorable experience that I would do over again some day.

edit: since there was talk on the dark scenes. The OLED didn't have any issues showing every detail in them with high contrast, but I did notice that the black levels were quite poor in some of them. When they wash out the blacks it can actually make the 3D effect less impressive even when everything is resolving well for me. It would have been nice if they had 10bits to work with and given a deeper shadow area, but it is what it is.

This had a little Avatar flair to it, better than I thought it would be, I enjoyed it a lot.

Holy hell... This is one hard 3D disc to get a hold of. It's sold out everywhere and the only copies to be found are at ludicrous prices from third party sellers on Amazon and eBay.

This must of been an extremely short run release and now extremely rare, so congrats to those who were smart enough to buy early.

(I'm aware Amazon UK might have a few copies left, however they won't ship to Australia)

More likely, like Frozen II 3D the ongoing business/biology problems have limited production numbers like many other discs and it's likely going to be hard to get until replication factories return to normal.

It's OOS, but no reason to believe is sold out permanently and OOP since I'm not aware any of the Disney 3D are long term sold out

It's in stock at HMV. I know they don't ship outside the UK but just saying.

No Amazon site will ship internationally right now, except for existing pre-orders, and even then those are delayed, as evidenced by identical discussions being repeated across every thread.

To avoid that happening here, please discuss importing and delivery issues in the Importing and delivery issues thread.

This isn't going out of print any time soon, don't worry.

I only want 1 Maleficent - which would you suggest it be --the 2014 or the 2019?

The sequel has better 3D but the first one is a better film. I would get both.

Exactly, buy both, why would you only buy one? The 3D is definitely worth it in both, though as 13thman said it is better in the 2nd movie, which I preferred overall to the 1st. Really like both movies though, lavish big budget fantasy adventures.

Thanks. The short answer is it can get expensive collecting all.

But also I like getting only the best from each series. Like if Aliens become 3D, I know I would get the 2nd. STAR WARS, it would be Attack of the Clones, etc.

I did get Transformers 1, Predator 1, RE 4 already while some series only have 1 3D in them like Final Destination 4. I think Friday 13th also has only 1 in 3D (?).

I find that with so few 3D Blu-rays being released these days, expense isn't as much of an issue as it used to be. It seems odd to me to watch a sequel without watching the original, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

And Final Destination 4 and 5 are both in 3D.
