United Kingdom Master & Commander

This is one of my favourite films and I see it on a special from Play at £9.99. However it has mixed reviews there (in terms of PQ) and after searching the forum here i've found it's quite an old Blu now having been released in 2007(as far as I can tell) anyway the question is this.

How does it compare with newer releases and would you guys recommend it as a purchase based on the PQ alone?

Oh, and a second question - I see from hunting around that there are only scant extras on the blu compared with the sp ed DVD - anyone care to voice an opinion on whether there may be a further release with the bells and whistles?

And a last comment - Play used to list the included extras on the DVD's but seemed to have stopped doing that which is a pain.

Thanks for any views

Master & Commander is one of my favorites too, and the DVD looks simply magnificent upconverted to high def.

There are so many great scenes in that movie that it would seem would benefit greatly from the upgrade in quality, so I keep thinking even a blu with bad PQ of this movie is probably better than DVD, and thusly worth getting just because of how amazing the scenery is in this movie.

Another movie I want a blu release of that may never happen? Barton Fink. The wallpaper peeling would just be freakin epic on blu.

PQ aside, the audio on this blu makes it totally worth buying. An excellent DTS HD MA 5.1 mix. Makes it feel like you're on the ship.

I own this blu, and I ask you.. It costs ten quid, what's the holdup? That's cheaper than new retail DVDs mate, and it'll look better than you've ever seen it irregardless of "PQ."

I think it looks good, only gripe is that scenes with heavy fog are permeated by grain. But what can you really do about that? That's right- nothing.

Just buy it man, the lossless audio in this masterpiece will blow you away.

EDIT
Extras don't mean squat. That's not what you spend your money on if you ask me. If the movie had cost £18, I might understand it. But most extras are in SD anyways, so if you have access to the DVD versions (friend, maybe?), it doesn't matter much. No extras in the BD.

likewise. ive always considered this movie to be the pinnacle of audio performance, on all levels.

its probably one of my most used blu-rays for sound quality, in the same regards as well on dvd.

PQ? its always been secondary to me, and as a comparative between the two, the sharpness and clarity is an definitely a step up compared to a good upconverting dvd player (to a certain degree).

would i buy it? at that price point. definitely.

Says a May 13, 2008 release date for the American version so not that old I think. Not sure about the UK release date

Thanks for your replies and views, i've just ordered it from Play. I understand where most of you were coming from regards the price extras etc but I am trying to be disciplined and certainly initially only intend to buy movies I already own where I feel there is a significant advantage in either PQ or AQ.

When it comes to extras, I know you are right and i'd probably only watch them once but for me its a bit like buying the next to top model of car because I don't really need leather seats and headlights that go round corners but then I always end up annoyed I didn't get the best one when I see one on the road. I know how my own psyche works I just can't do anything about it.

I just bought this movie today and I'm totally blown away by the audio on it. I have some other movies considered to be great for audio, but IMO none of them even come close.

My favorite movie of all time. I love the PQ and AQ on it. It's not reference PQ, but an improvement over the DVD. But just for the audio quality alone, it becomes a huge improvement. I love this movie, I'll say it again.
