Not sure if true, but many industry observers are saying they'd be shocked if a 4K Blu-Ray format were announced at CES in early Jan.
![]() Does this make such a product a complete non-starter in 2014 all together? Or is there still hope for a Fall launch with a small mix of catalog titles, and all of 2014's big new releases. Said it before...they are completely botching this... |

And (ownership/physical media preference issues, aside), how good will Netflix’s 4K PQ look with their HEVC streaming demo at CES? Questions….questions…… What is the dynamic range (in f-stops) of film considered to be and does any digital camera far exceed that? < That I can easily answer definitively for which I doubt few industry observers can….at least without some serious img eL–style Googling. |

![]() ![]() Meanwhile da Bears are getting slaughtered and I was hoping they’d clinch a playoff position tonight (my wife’s entire immediate family, nearly, lives in the Chicago area). Gotta eat dinner quickly to see if there's an unlikely turnaround in the 2nd half. Last edited by Penton-Man; 12-24-2013 at 06:05 PM. Reason: added the word 'immediate' for precision |

4K haters/skeptics should have fun with responses to this…“how to distinguish 4K with your clients…”

RED Dragon has 18 f-stop capability…..comfortably (more is debatable, since last I saw how the Dragon handled the DR chart Jim Jannard posted around last Dec.) What camera is capable of capturing 20 f-stops? |

“is being pushed together and the lines are blurring. And the truth is, folks like Amazon and Netflix saw this convergence even before the studios did and began offering DVD, Blu-ray, VOD and streaming, all at once. They saw the future before others, but now, in a sense, the future is here, and everyone’s recognizing and acting on that.”

But, given all the recent Dolby display publicity in the mainstream press and insights as to the next generation video proposal(s) to SMPTE mentioned here on this thread, in the meantime, do we really need fancy, expensive HDR cameras for the creation of high dynamic range material?
And what about the humongous legacy base of low-dynamic range (LDR) displays which are unable to render HDR? |

For the sake of completeness, I should also mention that several perceptual gammas (other than solely Dolby’s proposal for it) might be considered.
