Good news? Um, that article's from January. The BDA have been making the same noises about 4K BD for some time now; "we'll have this, we'll have that" blah blah. Wake me up when some proper information (specs, launch date etc) is released.

Well, here we are now 6 months from that article and still nada...although 4K/UHD resolution is usually the most talked about, some of the observations of 4K content vs reference quality 1080p Bluray upscaled on the same 4K display isn't all that much better, so it seems the real improvement that will get every ones attention is when we get higher bit depth and some expanded color schemes, and that seems to be where everyone is dicking around. Probably this would move along much faster if 4K/UHD were planned as the new broadcast standard but that ain't happening in the near future. |

Sadly, every month that passes without an official (and I mean an official official) announcement, the probability of a 4K disc format being released plummets.

Search word ‘cheese’ – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...se#post9103290 The question is, what form (specs) will it support....something which we've already been discussing in detail for months on previous pages here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...89830&page=178 |

Yeah, hopefully next year's CES will present some concrete info other than 'we're working on it', and if we're lucky we'll get it by Q4 2015.

No thats not it. Ill try and come across it again and put something up. Basically it said that sony has decided to explore other options in streaming plus the 4k media player they have. The article stated that 4k discs would be used for professional use only and there would not be an optical disc delivery system for home consumption. Of course, stuff always changes and hopefully this is one of those things that change. People want quality and streaming i dont think could ever hold a candle to a 4k blu ray format or whatever they decide to call it.

Sony said that Blu-ray hasn't performed as they'd hoped (in terms of licensing revenues etc rather than overall consumer takeup), which was predictably translated by all the streaming advocates to mean 'SONY GIVES UP ON PHYSICAL MEDIA!!!'. Pfft.
As was just said, Sony still won't be providing a proper 4K streaming service outside of the US (probably related to issues regarding all of the differing languages, licensing rights, and internet infrastructures across the countries in mainland Europe), and low bitrate 4K streams of House of Cards and Breaking Bad simply won't cut it if they want their 4K baby to survive infancy. No, we need proper content and we need it yesterday, and outside of the US a physical disc will be the only guaranteed method of high quality delivery into people's homes. Off-air broadcast will also have its part to play, but we're still a long way from that too, so for me it's 4K Blu-ray or bust. |

I keep seeing Samsung being mentioned. And after that article about them stealing patents in Vanity Fair, I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with something that "borrows" from Sony to fill the void.
And I'm curious, who has seen: 1) 1080p upscaled by the tv (or do they even do that) 2) Upscaled by the players from Sony, Samsung and LG In the days when 1080 was new, players did a much better job of upscaling DVDs than TVs. Is that still true? And how does it look? Is there a lot of edge artifacts like with 480 upscaled to 1080? That's a lot of data to fill. How does it compare to 1080p? |

What it boils down to unfortunately is that blu ray has not done what it was expected to do. You figure by 2003/2004 every household had a dvd player. Now, we're 8 years into blu rays life and people could simply care less. DVD is good enough still for most people. How do we expect to get any better than blu ray when the majority of people still arent buying blu ray? Its a shame really!! You can get a blu ray player these days on the friggin' cheap from Wal-Mart for like 60 bucks. That 60 bucks gets you 5 to 6 times the pixels of DVD, which in turn gives you a better home viewing experience. The best ever as a matter of fact. As good as the theater!!! I figured by now that blu ray would be kicking the crap out of DVD and its just not. That's why there wont be another optical format.

I was surprised when the PS4 came out when it did after all the financial woes Sony has had and how long it took for them to make money on the PS3. Every time I read something about Sony's financials its about how they just lost as much money as the GNP of most 3rd world nations.
