Favorite hotel in NYC?

I travel to New York for work several times a year, and I've tried out a few different hotels. Wondering if anybody else has any favorites to recommend, or horror stories to avoid.

Favorites

Fifty NYC (Midtown East) - Great, friendly service. All but the most inexpensive rooms are quite spacious and include kitchenettes. Free wine and appetizers every night in the common area.

The Hotel on Rivington (LES) - Feel like a rock star. Huge rooms, huge bathroom, luxury fixtures, incredible foam beds, floor to ceiling windows. Great night club on premises.

Wow those sound nicec spectre. I'm interested in what those rooms would cost so I'll have to check it out via google. I've only been to NY once and I forget where we stayed. It was right in the heart of Manhattan I guess which was really cool. It was nothing fancy but I'm not picky at all so as long as it's a bit bigger than a broom closet, I'm good.

I'm sure you know about TripAdvisor but you can check there as well as the message boards on Fodors.com. You may get a few more responses there. I think TA has message boards too but I can't remember. This is your thread, so if you have any stories to share about your travels, it would be great to hear them. Maybe you're not doing much else besides working the whole time, but if you write it, I will read it

I'm sure you know about TripAdvisor but you can check there as well as the message boards on Fodors.com. You may get a few more responses there. I think TA has message boards too but I can't remember. This is your thread, so if you have any stories to share about your travels, it would be great to hear them. The Hotel on Rivington is pretty pricey I believe, $300-$400/night. But Fifty NYC is actually really cheap by New York standards. I've seen rates there as low as $125/night. It's cheaper than a lot of the other hotels in its immediate vicinity, and it's no less nice.

I have a ton of new york stories, I also lived there from 2010 to 2013. If you had a specific question, I could probably conjure up a story.

jk What was the best thing about living in New York? I'm assuming you lived in the big city and not upstate or in Buffalo. Had you lived in big cities before that?
Do you remember what it was like living there your first week or two or longer, when you were discovering places and learning about the city?

$125 is pretty good for NYC, hard to find any place cheaper than that unfortunately.

I loved living in New York, I lived in the City. First in the Lower East Side and then on the Upper East Side. Actually, for the first 3 months I lived at the Soldier, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines Club (SSAMC) which is more or less a "hostel" for servicemembers and veterans, super cheap.

Before that I lived in Baltimore for a few years, also lived downtown there, so I was accustomed to the "urban" lifestyle to an extent.

The first few months can be daunting, it'll definitely try you. You have to learn to adapt to new things pretty quickly. Norms you're used to around things like personal space and transportation get turned on their head. That can be jarring for people sometimes.

If you adapt though, it's a great way to live. I miss it, and I always enjoy my trips back. The best thing about living in a dense urban center like Manhattan is the convenience though. Being able to walk out your door and find bars, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, museums, etc. within a few minutes walk is just incredible.

That is really cool. Were you in the military or was the SSAMC club open to everyone? Yeah , you must have been. I was in the Marines for 5 years and I lived in the barracks the whole time. Did you not have a traditional base to work and live at?

That really must have been quite an experience. I always think about what it would be like, as you mentioned, to live in a place where you can walk right out and maybe even get food at the shop right next door. I always think of it as being an Asian place. I looked at an apartment complex in SJ (they were actually closing but I got a brochure from leasing office) and even that felt too urban for me so I could only imagine how I would feel about living in Manhattan.

Did you ever go to SoHo? If so, what is that like?

I was in the guard at the time, left active duty in 08. I actually used guard weekends to get around their maximum stay requirements. They won't let you stay for more than 30 days at a stretch, so I would hole up in the hotel for a month, then go to Maryland for drill and reset my 30 days when i came back. If you're a vet and you wanna travel to NYC on the cheap you should stay at SSMAC, I think for vets it's like $75 a night or something like that. It's a lot like being in a barracks. 2 to 4 people to a room, single bed and a foot locker. You get to meet and hang out with other vets and servicemembers too, I loved it. If I'm ever rich it's on my short list of places to donate tons of money to.

I used to go to SoHo pretty often, it was only a short walk from my first place. You end up going there for very specific stores. For example, if you want to buy a pair of Converse tennis shoes, they have a store that sells pretty much every style they make, in every size and color, and they're always available. The brand specific stores in SoHo, and elsewhere in manhattan, are absolutely awesome.

I'm planning on visiting NYC for the first time (I know, I know) in the Spring, probably. So, I've been looking for hotels. I really want to stay on the Upper East Side, and I came across a hotel called The Mark. It looks just beautiful. Anyone stayed there and have an opinion?

The location is great on 77th St. It's like 5 blocks from MoMA, 1 block from Central Park, and only a few blocks from a subway stop. And even Carnegie Hall isn't that far away, a medium walk down Park Ave. Now, I don't quite know what is around there, but I'm sure a lot. Like I said, great location.

It has some really good reviews, however for the price it's not necessarily surprising.

In the end it's about convenience and what you're looking to do and whether you're looking to walk, take a subway, etc. For example, it's about a 2 mile walk from the hotel to Time's Square. Not sure what your plans are but
