Finished Xenogears. I think there is something there buried underneath all of the psychobabble, lightweight philosophizing, and religious kitsch, but even if this had been finished properly it still likely would have struggled to dramatize any of these ideas effectively. It would still have been exposition heavy and would still have just explicitly stated every single thing.

A wild ride, thoroughly mediocre gameplay. Definitely no masterpiece of any kind but it has its moments 7.5 is the best I could do.

This game is exhibit A in my argument that Square hasn’t changed as much as people think…crappy mobile games aside. They’ve had the same problems going back to the early days, there’s just a difference in perception when one is younger and more impressionable (in a good way) versus later on in life.

(Laughed when I found out Mitsuda was very displeased “Flight” was first introduced in a Chu Chu scene - it’s the central piece of music in the game and it’s used first for a joke character.)

I recently started and beat Stray on PS5. Currently trying to wrap up the trophies, I only have two left.

After some RE fun I decided to do the unthinkable: I'm going back to the epic Red Dead Redemption 2. Man this game is a goliath.

Playing Dragon Quest III (NES version.) Good ol’ Dragon Quest. Going fine but the back and forth at this current point - getting the third key - has me feeling a bit lost. Got the Vase of Drought and I believe I’m looking for some shoals out in the middle of the ocean somewhere. Gotta go back to wherever that guy who mentioned the shoals was to see if he said anything else (the “Jerk Castle” I think? Ugh, gotta do that invisible business again.)

Should be great! I’m not crazy about the games and remakes that use the DQVII pseudo 3D look but this looks like a nice fresh take on the games.

Got myself back on track after remembering to talk to the Eginbear Castle people at night. I’ve got Ramia now. The Cave of Necrogond was brutal! Checked out one time after getting the sword and armor, then trying to push through the second time I checked to see how much more I had to get through and realized that even though I was close to the exit, I didn’t have the resources to get out and make it to the shrine confidently. Healing would have been gone after one or two more battles and my wizard would certainly have gone dry fast clearing out dangerous groups. Had to bail out. I do have a Wizard Ring but I want to save it and any others I may find for the final boss. Third time three characters including my healer got numbed by the Marauders in the last room, so I had to leave again. Fourth time I finally made it! This place reminds of the final group of dungeons in Phantasy Star II (anyone who managed those without the gear capable of healing is a real beast!) Time to go to Baramos’ castle.

This is the last of the NES games for me. I still prefer DQIV but this one is really good!

Finished Dragon Quest III. Glad I saved up those Wizard Rings, you really wouldn’t want to conserve resources in Zoma’s Castle, it would truly be hell not to be able to fight with everything you’ve got. Also glad Dragon Quest ditched those tiles that completely screw up your movement (even after you’ve got the rules down on paper, it’s so tedious to have to stop and make absolute sure the direction you want is correct.) Zoma can hit like a train out of nowhere, his two Blizzard attack was doing 60-80 per round at one point, next thing I now it’s 170 or so! Scared the heck out of me. I think the Sage Stone was enough to keep my fighters going to the last blow but I’m glad I had that Leaf of the World Tree to pick my healer back up.

Get Dragon Quest VII up on PSN for me, please, and let’s get a single player reworking of IX out there on consoles so I can play it. And for the sake of all that is good, do a remaster of the PS2 version of Dragon Quest VIII already!

Have you played the Game Boy Color version? It's much better haha.

Nope, this was the first time. I’d really like to try the SNES remake but I’ve heard conflicting reports of how complete that translation patch is (the speed run I watched the other day certainly looked fine.) I believe they increased the HP of most bosses in that version, so I assume it’s the same with the GBC version.

I’m definitely getting the new remake when it comes out, unless it’s suddenly only coming out on the Switch (but I might finally get myself a Switch soon so...)

Not actually a game but related to it - I rewatched Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children for the first time in probably 15 years. Just as terrible as I remember it. Total rehash. Why is Rufus still alive? Cloud suddenly has the same issues he overcame in the game just to provide some faint presence of what they think is drama. They use The Reunion all over again, led by some awful villains, just to have Sephiroth in the film. There’s one decently conceived action scene - when the team launches Cloud into the air against Bahamut (but if even Cloud needs help, how did the party get to these high places so damn quickly?) The rest is a nonsensical blur of fast motion fighting. The random “pretty, artistic” shots are ridiculous; all bad taste and trying way too hard. The arrangement of Uematsu’s music is painfully of that time.

It’s a bad film, no doubt about it.

Yeah the GBC version is even better than the SNES in every aspect except the graphics. Added soooo much stuff. But hopefully it will all be in the new new remake too.

Nier Automata: playing on easy with chips turned on for the story. Seems interesting so far.
2B is definite waifu material.

Witcher 3: second attempt to try this game (on easy) still not quite feeling it.
Way too easy to wander into someplace with really strong enemies & get trounced.
Didn't realize there was lots of stuff to do in town after you meet the Emperor.

Kingdom Hearts 3: yep easy mode. This game is kinda jarring with a big fight then a cutscene. Story is a bit odd as well.

Will keep playing them for now.

Chancing a playthrough of Dragon Quest VIII on my PS2 and CRT. I think the disc drive can handle this. I can’t keep holding out for a remaster of this to turn up (darn you, 3DS version! *shakes fist*) Man, this game still looks great in all of its PS2-on-a-CRT TV with orchestral score glory - the way it is best experienced.

DQ XI fixed the size problem of this game; the overworld is a little too big and there’s not a lot to it on replay, I wish there were some minor bits in between towns to liven up things and some means of faster traversal, but this is still the wonderfully episodic delight that the series mastered way back with III and IV.

Seriously, bring this back to modern consoles already.

Tomb Raider (2013) on PC. I played it when it released on PS4, but never got around to playing the last 2. I grabbed them all on Steam and started with this one to refresh my memor.

I decided to take a break from Assassin's Creed: Revelations and start playing thru the Destroy All Humans! remake for the first time.

Hopefully I'll be caught up by the time Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed releases, I still plan on pre-ordering that.
