The only movie I really want out of this set is Run Lola Run. I’ve been out bid on eBay already for the individual movie a couple of times. Does any one know of somewhere else people might be selling the 4K individually?
The rest of the movies are all good and I don’t currently own any of them so I may just end up buying the whole set. But I hate feeling like I’m spending ~200 bucks for ultimately one movie. |

I can watch most of it without subtitles, but still need them. Didn't live in my Mutterland most of my life. Said this before and then deleted the comment, but Sony's subtitles look much better than they used to. Look at the forced subs in something only a couple of years old like Black Hawk Down and notice the heavy shadow and low resolution. They dropped the shadow, finally, and the the text is much sharper now. Only negative is that Lola's subs are much closer to the bottom now than they used to be.
Edit: Just watched Lost Children. Take it back slightly. Resolution of subs still blocky, especially italicized, but big improvement. Old Lola BD's were so bad. Last edited by Warm Gun; 12-06-2022 at 04:41 AM. |

My set arrived in Australia from Amazon US today, and despite the shipping box being pretty beat up it was thankfully packed well with plenty of padding, and the outer box and most of the slipcovers arrived mint. My slipcover for The City of Lost Children has a very slight crease, but nothing as bad as the examples in this thread.
As others have mentioned, the cases themselves appear to be used. It’s fine for everything except Run Lola Run, where the back cover insert was folded up due to getting caught on the plastic (there is a section in the lower left of the plastic sleeve on several of my cases with identical creases, thankfully it has not caused any issues with the other covers). All of the discs load in my player. My discs for Run Lola Run, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and The Devil’s Backbone have incredibly minor scratches on the outer sections, but they do not seem to affect playback. My player is quite prone to locking up when fast forwarding through discs that will cause me issues. Still Alice has a slightly less minor scratch about halfway down the disc. Again it does not seem to affect playback, but I'll only know for sure when I sit down and watch the film properly. My disc for Volver (the film which convinced me to bite the bullet on this unusually expensive set) is unfortunately heavily scuffed. I was able to fast forward through the whole movie and watch sample sections without issue, but I guess I’ll see when I sit down to watch it. I was concerned about The Devil’s Backbone based on the screencaps, but the scenes I watched while testing it looked absolutely gorgeous in motion. It's mildly annoying that the non-English films with dubs appear to default to their English dubs, but I imagine that's par for the course with US releases. There was a fair amount of dust both on and inside my set, which is strange as the entire thing was factory sealed. There's nothing more I can add to the conversation than what has been said in countless threads, but it is getting incredibly frustrating that QA for expensive releases has seemingly gone out the window over the last few years. It's getting to the point where I'm happy if a disc arrives and doesn't look like it's been dragged across sandpaper. It's especially frustrating as someone who imports a lot of releases from the US, as the returns processes can range from difficult to non-existent. Overall I'm generally happy with my set, and hope the scratches don't cause significant problems in the future. |

These studio based box sets are very frustrating to me as a collector as it asks me to buy movies I don't care about to get the ones I do. I tried the Columbia Vol.2 and regretted it even at $99. I wish they could understand that most of us don't care about their studios. How many people file their movies by studio? I'd happily buy a few of these but am not paying $200 for the privilege. Shame.

Wow on Ebay Run Lola Run now sells in the $70 range (one auction listed is currently at $76 and going).
Guess that one really is the crown jewel of the set. |

I gave in and did the same yesterday. I really wanted CMBYN, Celluloid Closet, and Orlando, and while the latter two can be gotten easily and fairly cheaply, CMBYN is pricey enough that I figured I might as well buy the whole thing, watch the ones I've never seen, and sell off what I decide not to keep. And I get to upgrade CTHD as an added bonus!

City of Lost Children looked drained to me in later parts. I briefly wondered if my HDR didn't come back right after pausing and having the screensaver come up. Probably just how the movie looks. But I didn't find that aspect especially attractive (in parts). Other scenes looked low resolution. I saw a kind of grid over the picture in one scene. Not sure if it was the compositing or digital effects. I was somewhat bored and couldn't pay as much attention as I normally would.
