Pluto shorts will be on the Lady and the Tramp II blu-ray. It doesn't say if they are HD or what ones yet, but to my assumption they will be.

Let me just tell you that Future Hiawatha was not on the Pocahontas BD I bought and that I don't think it's likely it will be on the US version.

Ahh yes, Destino! When I first watched that one I had to seriously consider if I'd somehow taken drugs or something. Man that was weird! But I guess that's what Dali was known for.

To contribute to your first post, it's on the Fantasia 2000 BD for all European seperate releases, in full HD.

Agreed, but maaaan that thing was tripping balls. Watching it after smoking pot would probably do a lot of harm.

By the way if you're adding all the finished Fantasia 2006 shorts you should add the one with the kite too, it's on Lion King II in SD if I'm not mistaken. There was also the one with the candlesticks girl, that one was on the Little Mermaid or the Aladdin DVD I'm too lazy to check.

I think he is adding shorts that are on blu-rays to the list if i'm not mistaken, and the name of the short you were talking about is: The Little Matchgirl, and is a fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson on The Little Mermaid DVD ( The same author).

And One by One, which is in SD on Simba's Pride, and it is already in the technical specifications. I'm waiting to see if Little Matchgirl is rumored for the future to add it

I just watched all of the shorts on the Snow White BD and except for The Goddess of Spring, which is obviously upscaled SD, it looks to me like they're all from HD transfers. They're grainy and some have lots of dust on them, but these spots and the grain are so detailed they simply cannot be from SD transfers.
I'll try to put some on YouTube later this week.

On a side note, I'd take those grainy shorts over the smooth look of Steamboat Willie any day. Even with the flicker added back in it looks weird and unnatural.

Really? Grain is so distracting, and Steamboat Willie's flickr was artificial so it looked very rough

Grain distracting? Maybe it's because I'm a film science student and think of films as much as a part of history as mere entertainment, but I find the lack of grain more distracting. It's an inherent quality of the medium film, and the perfectly modern looking restorations lack the authenticity they are supposed to have.

Steamboat Willie had the most outrageous 'restoration' I've seen; the restoration team had their usual way with it, creating still images of the backgrounds and cleaning them up, cutting out the animation and repainting it etc. Then they decided it looked too pristine, so they added back some grain, but only in some cells, and a certain amount of weave and flicker. The result is an inconsistent mess; heavy grain in one part of the image while the rest looks unnaturally smooth(for example, the cow's mouth), vertical scratches, caused by a projector, that are standing still in the background, whites that were grainy are now a smooth grey color...
And this statement is just unbelievable: 'I think in these movies, at least the old black-and-whites that were done in that style of animation, there's a part of history there that's captured on the negative that doesn't necessarily apply to the later color films or the Technicolor films.' (from here)
Whatwhointheha? An 84-year-old film has a part of history captured on the negative, but a 75-year-old one (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) does not? It's a steaming pile of bullcrap. The fact that Snow White was captured on film alone says something about history, a fact that will only become more relevant as film is being used less and less.
The sad thing is that I think the Disney archivists and restoration teams know that, but they're to do what the marketing guys say: A grainy, old looking children's movie won't sell, so make it look new.

Anyway, everyone is of course entitled to their own opinions and tastes, so please do not take this as an attack in any way. I can see why someone would prefer a cleaned up version of the animation. I just feel rather strongly about this, hence the rant.

------
That's that. Now for the shorts on Snow White; could you update the opening post and move all of them, except the Goddess of Spring, to an HD category? They certainly aren't upscaled. I'll check the rest of the Blu-rays too when I have the time.

YouTube's compression doesn't do them much good (mainly due to grain not translating well to lower compressions), but it gives an impression of what these shorts look like in HD:
Playful Pluto
Music Land
Babes in the Woods
Steamboat Willie (not available in the US)

I didn't think it looked that bad, maybe because Steamboat Willie is my favorite, i just don't want grain to make the whole thing look dirty and the action behind stained glass. That's just me, to me I don't mind damage though, which is kind of weird

Update with Tangled Ever After, which is presented in 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio by the way! I removed the shorts with Great Mouse Detective as the first review from Home Theater Forum said they were not on there. With Pollyana confirmed for Bluray I put Nifty Ninties in there as it was on the dvd. I will further update still with the new live action rumors. Have a great day!
