I think we all have our own ideas about what a perfect Blu-ray release should look like.
Please select the options that are the most important ones to you. You are also welcome to list the ones you HONESTLY consider to be PERFECT. Not necessarily the movie itself, but in terms of PQ, AQ, and Bonus Content. Mine: Pacific Rim PQ: 5/5 AQ: 5/5 Extra Bonus Disc with lots of content. A great director's commentary. A classy slipcover. All editions releases from the get go. Kicka$$ film Oh, wait: Stacked discs Lol Last edited by Bluyoda; 07-11-2014 at 10:36 PM. |

Demons from synapse is also a good example, but in the end, it's the quality of the transfer over everything else. The presentation of how it's packed and extra content is usually an unneeded bonus unless it's a film I absolutely adore and want to know everything about.

Blade Runner and the Alien Anthology sets. All of the versions with great PQ/AQ and tons of special features including feature length documentaries.
For television I would have to say Star Trek. Those are what I would judge all other releases against. |

The perfect release:
It would be Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi before any mutilations, manipulations or bastardizations. They would be presented in the highest quality possible with all the glorious imperfections that came with them. It would have interviews with Gary Kurtz, Lawrence Kasdan, John Williams and Marcia Lucas. I would not want George anywhere around this release, no interviews, no commentary or anything else from him because everything coming from him is either a lie or revisionist history at best. I would love to have documentaries from back then included, isolated scores as well as deleted scene’s (real ones) not fake ones filmed way after the fact and passed off as authentic (See Luke constructing the light sabre scene), original Ralph McQuariee art slide show with all his Star Wars work. Old interviews with Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand. And no I would not want that Christmas special as that was an embarrassment to all of us even back then. It’s too bad Roger Ebert is gone because I would want his commentary track on them as well. Don't care about the price because I would pay 100+ bucks or more for that set. Ok a bit more serious
PQ - a perfect restoration in the correct aspect ratio AQ - original audio remastered it is correct form , if the studio do a 5.1 mix then make sure they are both on there so we can pick which is the best for ourselves. Also if there is different versions of the film make sure they are on the disc like Blade Runner, Alien and Touch of evil , they should have done that for the Friday 13th collection and a space saga we all know. |

-4K restoration and high bitrate
-Perfect audio. -Several extras, including documentaries, and any extra materials that were shot on film should be presented in HD 1080p (i.e. give me new scans of those deleted scenes in 1080p if they still exist, don't just rip them from an old DVD... I can't stand that!). There are lots of new release blu-rays that are "perfect blu-rays", because new films will mostly have HD extras and top PQ/AQ. So that is almost assumed, the only question is if the film itself is worthy my time, does it have extras that are interesting to me, and if it's "reference quality" good, or just "good". It's catalog films where I really appreciate when they go the extra mile, because that's where we see alot of inferior transfers slapped on to blu, extras merely ported over from DVD, or sometimes no extras at all. So when you have a release that has all the bells and whistles, and a bunch of HD extras (or at least when you know the extras are in their best possible quality, if some were sourced from video), that's where it feels special. Basically Sony's Mastered in 4K but with
original lossless audio track (along with the 5.1/7.1 remix if there is one) all cuts available (doesn't matter to me if it's on a separate disc for longer movies or ones with significant differences/Lucas'd cuts) one good commentary one good hour+ long BTS feature, presented in HD if possible (I'm not sure how scannable video stuff is) I used to care about bonus features but now I don't really mind if there aren't a lot as long as there's a nice core one. I'm not going to go through the trouble of watching a few 3 minute EPKs. Deleted scenes aren't really my thing either. I prefer standard cases but if it's going to be a nonstandard case I would prefer it be something with a hub release disc tray because everything else is terrible. |

Most important for me:
ALL VERSIONS AVAILABLE! Please!! For heaven's sake!! You can't release just an extended/director's cut/special edition and NOT the theatrical cut!! then: - NOT DNR (DNR ruins the filmic experience) (can you hear this Disney?) - ORIGINAL COLORS (again, something that many ignore and do what they want) - Original lossless audio If a Bluray release has these specifications then i would be very happy even if it didn't have extras, and stuff... There's no simple way of describing what a perfect blu ray release is. Even the current poll leader (4K scan) has a "however" or an asterisk next to it. Because I would rather have a good 2K scan of the original negative than a 4K scan of an interpositive.

I want all the different cuts of the movie, and I want an 8K remaster, and I want lossless sound, and I want whatever OAR as the director initially intended, and I want commentaries, and I want 3D, DVD, DC, a bonus features disc with every single extra feature ever produced for the film, and I want it all in a steelbook...I want it all!!!!

Don't care about packaging or extras, that stuff is gravy. Pristine video and audio, prepared with respect for its original intended presentation -- original soundtrack included even if it's later been upgraded to multichannel or had its effects tweaked. Original (or, in rare case, filmmaker's preferred) aspect ratio. Clear documentation if it's an extended or recut version of the film. Subtitles, but not forced.
