The shelf inconsistency is what's going to annoy me most. You'll have FUNimation 1-3 and then possibly GKIDS 1-4 which most likely will have their usual uniform spine that won't match.

It surprises me we don’t have a Custom Cover Art Thread for anime. Does nobody that uses this thread regularly know how to use Photoshop?

I barely know how to use GIMP, that's about it.

On a similar note, does anyone know of good glossy paper that is compatible with inkjet printers?

Heh, that's nothing. If you want Evangelion shelf inconsistency, I present you with this...

Which ones do you watch regularly: original series vs. films?

Looks like my collection of NGE minus a few of the things you've got.

I personally prefer the original series, but the Rebuild films are alright as well. I'm pretty good at mentally compartmentalizing the original 1995-1997 content (i.e. Eva TV, D&R, and EoE) separately from the 2007-2021 content (i.e. the four Rebuild films).

To add on, how do you usually watch the different versions. ADV DVDs? JP Blu-rays?

For the sake of convenience I go with 1080p .MKV rips of the Japanese BDs w/ muxed-in English subs and output them to my TV. My preferred watching order is 1-20, 21'-24' (director's cut versions), 25-26, and then Revival of Evangelion (i.e. Death[True]² + EoE).

Occasionally I might go for the theatrical version of Death and Rebirth which is only found in the Japanese BD box set, or the original broadcast versions of the TV episodes which are only found in the Japanese "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box just for the sake of experiencing those works in their original formats.

Serial Experiments Lain - Complete Series - Classic (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

This seems to be OOP.

BestBuy: Sold Out
RightStuf: No Longer Available
Funimation Shop: Out of Stock

Unless Funimation releases a new edition, this will be gone quickly.
Grab your copy while it's available at Amazon.com.

I backordered Lain on RS during their Bday sale. Amazon was OOS at the time so they at least got more stock since then.

A OK release, there's banding issues galore and what feels like contrast boosting. Japanese release is better.

The French release is also very good. Better than the Japanese in some areas, and worse in others.

I cried when I received my Lain Blu-rays from Funi.
The banding, the encoding.
I just wish funi would grow a brain and learn to encode properly.
Is that too much to ask?

They might do a Blu-ray only re-release, with the purple "Classics" banner on top of the artwork. Maybe i'm wrong though.

Lain is a pretty big name release. Seems like an odd thing to let go out of print - unless their license is up.

Looks like Amazon got the "Essentials" re-release of Nichijou back in stock for $35, so I pulled the trigger on it. While that's $10 more than its all-time low back in March-May 2021, it's still a very fair price for a 2-cour show and I don't want to risk it truly going OOP and then having to pay $Texas for it. Several people paid about $60 for sealed copies on eBay this past month, after all...

Worth noting they don't compare favorably to the Blu-ray.

P.S. And a shout out to amazon.co.jp who finally raised the discount from 24% to the more standard 27% only immediately after shipping preorders. Thanks a bunch, jerks.

Despite FUNimation's Blu-ray looking worse than the Japanese release due to the amount of banding it has among other issues (screenshots), it's still an upgrade over the Geneon release. Though there is reason to hang onto the Geneon DVDs, FUNimation is missing the easter eggs from them.
