Universal Studios Ocean Waves (1993) - April 18, 2017

Studio Ghibli's 1993 TV film, Ocean Waves, will be officially releasing in the U.S. in January 2017 after an initial premiere in NYC on December 28th courtesy of GKIDS Films, with a DVD/Blu-Ray release set for the spring. However, the film will still be subtitled only. NO English dub is planned at the current time.

Dope, I haven't seen this but I'll surely add it to my Ghibli collection. Just need this and the Yamadas ~

Glad this is finally getting a release. I watched it years ago and the quality was so-so. I remember thinking it's minor Ghibli, and certainly not on par with the other recently elusive gem that is Only Yesterday, but I'm eager to watch it again.

To be fair, this was a made for TV movie.

Ocean Waves stands out for me as one of the best works from the Ghibli catalogue

Funny enough, I was JUST thinking about this film a few hours ago. What a coincidence.

I wasn't bowled over on my first viewing but absolutely loved it a second time! Hope we get a cinema release in the UK, followed by a Blu-ray!

Sounds like this will be a very limited release, as they said on Twitter that only a few more cities will be added to the screening list. Apparently the money saved will be put towards procuring more extras for the Blu-Ray. Really hoping Ghiblies Episode 2 and On Your Mark surface on there as GKIDS recently acquired the rights to both for the Fathom Events screenings of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

Excellent, excellent. The only Ghibli movie I don't own on Blu-ray as I've been waiting for US distribution. Hopefully by the time it hits Blu-ray, a dub will be recorded.

I saw this at a Ghibli festival and was extremely underwhelmed by it, especially after knowing nothing and being so head-over-heels in love with Only Yesterday. Nice that it's coming out but for those who haven't seen it, I'd really advise a rental first.

I agree with tyler. Keep in mind, this is a made-for-TV movie and though it reportedly went over-budget, it's a very modest animation production. And it's not what I call top-tier Ghibli even putting aside the animation. But it's a neat slice-of-life story about moving on and it's worth a look, though if you want a more extravagant version of it, try 5 Centimeters Per Second.

It's probably for the best to keep this one subtitled-only. It's niche even by Ghibli's standard.

It's nice it's getting released, but it won't make a difference for me. I know I'll get a lot of flack for it, but I don't like subtitled stuff, it takes me out of the experience of watching a movie when I have to keep looking away from what's going on to read what they're saying... so I'll have to pass on this.

Maybe it'll do well enough though and they'll decide to finally dub it one day like they did with Only Yesterday.

Doubt it, the movie isn't getting any younger. Ghibli doesn't think this movie would make the money back if they gave it a Hollywood celebrity dub. They could use anime dub actors ,but Ghibli wants there movies to be associated with celebrities

Maybe so, but since this was a TV movie, I could see them not trying to get big name stars. I honestly don't think they do that well getting that big of celebrities in the first place except for Daisy Ridley for Only Yesterday. The Wind Rises was probably the movie with the most relevant English voice cast at the time but otherwise it seems the bigger names for a lot of the dubs are actually for the secondary characters or they happen before somebody gets famous or after their '15 minutes' are up and not talked about so much.

It'd have been nice if they kept the UK dub of Arrietty with Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, and Olivia Colman (as much of an Amy Poehler fan as I am) instead of dubbing it just to use Disney Channel actors, which is mostly the case with Ponyo too but they used the younger siblings of popular people at the time.

I'm not expecting it to ever be dubbed, I'd still consider my collection complete if it's never released since it's a TV movie... but it'd be nice if it was. I'm still waiting on Yamadas though lol

I bought the Japanese blu as soon as it came out - this may be my fave Ghibli (tying with Whisper of the Heart) because it has an uncluttered approach and tells its story without any apparent structure. The music really helps the laid-back mood of it, too.

And dubs, ugh. I can't think of a worse way to rob the film of its unique Japanese-ness.

The Ghibli dubs have actually been quite good to excellent from both Disney and GKids. Opinions vary, of course, but I was quite satisfied with all of the dubs except for The Wind Rises -- that dub just didn't gel with me. The others I found just fine.

To the point where I personally feel disappointed that this one isn't getting dubbed. I guess this movie isn't that popular to justify the costs. I'll probably rent this one to see if I like it or not.

The only Ghibli dub I hate is the American Arrietty dub.

What don't you like about it, or prefer about the Japanese track?

They made Arrietty rude and changed characters name and added a Disney channel song to the end credits. The UK dub is a way better English dub.

What's it about? Ghibli is very hit-or-miss.
