Are you a slow reader?

Yeah I don't see what this film gains from an English dub at all tbh? Obviously ideally it should be there for completion's sake and viewer choice given that every other Ghibli film has come out with English options, but I completely fail to see what can be gained from viewing in english? It's a relatively "still" slice-of-life teen drama so it's not like having to read the subs will get in the way of optically taking in the animation, nor would I think it would be an exciting watch for the young children in your family.

Some people may have trouble with reading comprehension, and dubs help them more fully enjoy the movie? I've seen this with subs so I don't care either way, but I'm not going to knock those who want a dub.

I've yet to watch Only Yesterday and Poppy Hill with their dubs since I'm so used to watching the import DVDs I have, but those films are just like this one (plots that somewhat heavily rely on Japanese culture, Only Yesterday in particular, and far from kiddie flicks) yet they got dubs. Only real difference here is that Ocean Waves is a made for TV movie.

Ah, something like dyslexia would be a not-uncommon issue, good point! Thought never crossed my mind! People with poor eyesight too will be alienated from the release I guess.

The Disney Ghibli dubs are among the best IMO. Very well done.
And GKids. The dubs aren't perfect; they do have their faults. But they're not by any means bad.

Which is why I find it disappointing that this one isn't getting dubbed.

As well as you shouldn't. It should always be "each to their own". I don't have anything against people who prefer the Japanese versions, I just like the dubs on these movies more. It's easier for me to connect with the movies in a language I can understand.

From the sound of it, they are not expecting this movie to be a big seller, and the cost of a dub is what has stood in the way of the movie getting a U.S. release until now. While it is usually better to have both options, a subtitled-only release is better than no release.

The lack of a Dub track and the fact that this isn't a real theatrical Ghibli means I will pass for now, especially at a $25 price point. My daughter can't read the subs fast enough and she watches these a lot so the lack of dub is a bid reason I am skipping

Perhaps that is the reason, although it still is a bit of a bummer, especially since I'm one of the few people here who thinks the Disney-Ghibli dubs are generally great. I tried watching them in Japanese, but I just can't connect with them. The dubs are fine to me.

I was sticking up for the dubs, why direct this at me? The only reason I saw this in Japanese is because I had to, I lived in Japan for a while while working and nabbed the DVD. It's easier to watch a movie in your native language than in a language you only half understand. (Besides, half the time I get what they said, and then the translator chose to interpret it another way and it confuses the heck out of me.)

I didn't mean it as a direct attack at all, honestly. I was just saying I agreed that we shouldn't judge others for watching dubs. Sorry if it came across that way. I certainly wasn't intending it to make it sound like such.

It's been a while since I watched this one, but I think I did need to read a lot of the subtitles. I studied standard Tokyo-ben in college and summer abroad, then when I lived there I was right north of the lake in good old Ibaraki. I joke that it was just like home; this part of PA has heavy PGH influenced vocabulary.

Slipcover... yeeeeessss....

Of course, that leaves Amazon out. They don't picture it with a slip, so there's no guarantee this will come with one. On the other hand, who knows if brick-and-mortar stores like Best Buy will even carry it...

Wal-Mart should carry it. I've noticed they've been getting the Kids titles distributed by Universal.

I ordered Marnie and Only Yesterday from Amazon and they came with their covers, and my Kaguya has its cover. It came from either Target or Amazon, I can't remember.

I do remember getting Marnie a little bit after it came out, so there is some hope.

Got mine from Amazon today, and it has the slipcover.

In fact, I never receive new releases without a slipcover...and I do 99.9% of my Blu-ray shopping at Amazon.
