Yeah, what gives?!? I've wondered the same thing.. At the end of the movie I thought, "Where the f**k were the dogs? Did I miss some thing?"

I was wondering if there's an editing error or just an odd editing choice at the 27:18 mark. They are at the hotel (daytime) and Yutaka asks Taku if he wants to walk in town, then it cuts to a torch for a couple seconds (nighttime), then back to a shot of Taku at the hotel responding (daytime), followed by a cut to the next scene in the town location with the torches (night). The random torch shot seems like it could have been the opening shot of the nighttime town location scene instead of awkwardly dropped into the middle of dialog in the daytime hotel scene.

That said, the dialog was happening off frame, so there are no visuals that would give away if the edit got messed up.

I had to hunt for the scene you mentioned, since the backup copy I made from my JP DVD on my media server (haven't opened my BD yet) doesn't correspond to the same timeframe you listed. But no, the torch shot is present on the DVD copy so it is not an editing error. It happens at 26:49 on my clock- they make plans to go for a walk, torch shot, he sighs, then back to the people at the night picnic.

It's been a while since I watched the movie end to end, so I don't recall if the torch means anything. Maybe it's like an idea bulb?

It looks like this is going to be a lightning deal tomorrow morning. Current price is $13.19 on Amazon.

Just got around to watching this, is it just me or every time the scene changes the camera angle is tilted for just a single frame, and then adjusts. It’s really distracting

Does anyone know the difference between the Shout release and this one? They both have Japanese audio, so I assume they're the same?

Comparing the back covers, I guess the only thing different is the booklet.

I mean does anyone have this? Is the transfer the same then or does it have a higher bitrate?
