Default Evokative Films Collection: Rare Independent Asian & European films for $5 each!

Evokative Films, a tiny Quebec-based boutique DVD label that released ten interesting independent movies before going out of business 5 years ago, created a webstore in the past few months to liquidate their leftover inventory. Now shipping out of California, they've still got stock on all ten of their films, which are being sold for only $5 each.

These are really great DVDs, with booklets and good transfers and special features. I own "Hazard", which I bought for a much higher price off Amazon a couple years ago, but I recently ordered a bunch more of their films. Taking Hazard for example (my personal favourite movie), this is the only English-friendly release of it in the world, and there's little hope of it getting a blu-ray release, so this might be the last chance to own an official copy of it, period. For the titles that do have other official releases, they won't be cheaper, and only a couple of these films have ever been released on blu-ray. Check them out!
  • The Killer (2007, rare French thriller)
  • Crying Fist (2005, popular Korean boxing movie starring Choi Min-sik)
  • Hansel & Gretel (2007, popular Korean horror movie)
  • Hazard (2005, Japanese film by Sion Sono starring Jo Odagiri)
  • Adrift in Tokyo (2007, popular Japanese film starring Jo Odagiri)
  • Daytime Drinking (2008, good Korean indie)
  • Black (2009, rare French thriller)
  • Parking (2008, rare Taiwanese dark comedy)
  • The Misfortunates (2009, popular Flemish comedy-drama)
  • Down Terrace (2009, popular British comedy by Ben Wheatley)

Which ones would you recommend? Any to avoid?

BTW, when I click the Paypal Checkout button, a strange email shows up at the top. WTF? This is before I log in or anything like that. Is this email the person the payment is being sent to? I don't want to do anything until someone here confirms.

Thanks.

Edit: Looks like it's for the founder of Evokative.

I've only seen three - Adrift in Tokyo, Daytime Drinking, and Hazard. Adrift in Tokyo is a quirky and accessible movie that's quite enjoyable. Daytime Drinking is very low-budget, very indie feeling, but I really really liked it. Hazard will be very polarizing to people, and I might be the only person in the world to think this, but I think it's my personal favourite movie of all time – and I know there are some Sion Sono fans who would be all over this DVD if they only knew it existed... That one's definitely the catalyst to me wanting to spread the word about this company.

All look interesting though. Well, I'm not really interested in the French ones, but the rest look pretty good from what I've seen. Though Down Terrace and Hansel and Gretel are available on blu-ray, so... I ended up ordering all the Asian movies besides H&G, though she ended up throwing in H&G to make up for being slow on my order. So I have the DVDs of Crying Fist, Parking, and Hansel & Gretel unwatched, I can update this post with my opinion when I get round to watching them. Definitely I wanna check out Down Terrace (I liked Sightseers another dark comedy by the same director) and The Misfortunates eventually too.

edit: Watched "Parking". A very strange film, with a bizarre plot all revolving around this quite unlucky guy on one night, but it's got a really great atmosphere, sorta Scorsese-After-Hours-esque. I liked it a lot. The disc isn't up to Evokative's usual standards, being non-anamorphic and lacking special features or a booklet, but it's still definitely worth it to see this unique and hard-to-find movie.

These are back, at a new webstore. Now shipping from Quebec.

I ended up collecting all of these. I personally wasn't into Down Terrace and haven't gotten around to the French films yet, but I really like all the others! Good DVDs, and I think Down Terrace and Hansel & Gretel are still the only ones available on (english-friendly) blu-ray.
