Ok I guess that means that things scanned in 4K that take up the full 24mm frame width (S-35, Silent, etc) will still have to be cropped or resized down.
[Show spoiler] Well, c' est la vie. |

![]() ![]() Already covered back in January – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...op#post5724086 b.t.w., as an aside, despite the fact that the 4K theatrical projection standard is 4096 x 2160, the typical 4K Digital Cinema workflow has used a 4096 x 3112 digital intermediate to begin with. |

If the past is any indicator, one need only wait to witness a dramatic price decrease. Sony's 70" Qualia TV debuted at about $13K, and eventually evolved into the XBR2 version at $6K. Similarly, Sony's first 70" flat panel, the XBR3 was originally $33,000 in 2007 (?), improved as the $22,000 XBR7 model in 2009, and finally discontinued last year when Sharp released 70" LED backlit models for around $2,000.

Sony just had their roadshow piece here in our store this past weekend. Sweet piece! The 3D is using pasive glasses because it's upconverting regular HD to 4K so you get 1080p in each eye... which you don't at the present time with passive glasses. The only other panel I've seen that would second the Sony is the less than half price 75" Samsung 9000 series. I'd be damn happy with either one.
Sony ran a hard drive on the set with real 4K material and also ran some Blu-Ray clips as well as a PS3 game. I will say the Gran Turismo looked incredible being upconverted to 4K but not nearly as impressive when switched to 3D mode. There was much more aliasing on the game so 2D was the better way to go for sure. Very cool set though and the Sony guys were here talking to customers the whole time. We will be getting one for display in a few weeks. |
