It made second place in the American box office in just limited release showings! How much would this have made in wide release!

$1,586,217 yesterday and still in second place!

I was surprised to just how many beats Shinkai recycled from 'Your Name'. I get that all artists repeat themselves, and the best way to solidify success is with more of the same, but I did not expect the films to be so similar. You've got a story with a teen boy and girl. One from Tokyo, one from the small town. Some paranormal stuff brings them together as lots of jokes about teenage boys' awkwardness around girls serve to keep things light. Then the scope takes a big jump as natural disaster looms and things become more urgent and serious.

The film is driven forward by absurd coincidences, contrivances, and behaviour that felt really unnatural. The worst being a subplot involving the police. All the cop stuff really felt like it was jammed in there just to throw obstacles in the protagonist's way during the climax, which would have been dramatic enough without it.

I was enjoying the movie, but as it got into its third act it really lost me a lot. I liked that the protagonist made a choice that will be divisive and off-putting, and that the film followed through with the consequences of that. That was interesting. But I had trouble getting invested again after it got so ridiculous during its climax.

As one would expect, the production value is top notch with absolutely gorgeous animation.

My guess is that most anime fans will like this film much more than I did, overlooking plotting and character problems and enjoying the film for its sincerity and aesthetic.
I rarely care what others think... but I do admit that this touched exactly how I felt. If nothing else, I would go as far as to saying that the movie was very sweet but still felt kind of empty in comparison to "Your Name" which is really unfortunate considering how much felt like it was lifted from the prior film (tone, elements of the characters, etc.) to this one. You really nailed it in your summary.

The beginning felt a little off to me though and took me a little of time to get into it, but when it did, I was genuinely hooked and smiling regardless of some of the typical tropes you get with these films. But the third act and some of the character choices or situations were bizarre (and for me, off-putting) with little to no reason for them occurring.

Did you feel that the ending was kind of anti-climactic? Not the choice being made towards the end, but
[Show spoiler]the reunion between the two lead characters?
I almost felt like it was forced with little there.

I really did like this film... just by no means anywhere close to "Your Name." Where I ordered the 4k set without hesitation for that, I am shocked to see so many willing to drop that type of money for something that felt like several steps down from that film.

I almost felt like it was forced with little there.
As for the epilogue
[Show spoiler]keeping the two main characters out of communication for so long just felt unnatural and another contrived way of forcing drama. It didn't seem like what would really happen, more like what Shinkai needed to happen in order to make their face-to-face reunion more dramatic.

So I watched Tenki no Ko tonight.

First the good parts: The depiction of weather was beautiful. I loved the section where
[Show spoiler]Tokyo was inundated by a few inches and the sun came out.
That section also had the most convincing depiction of summer heat I remember seeing in anime. The 3D sequences were impressive (and quite numerous), for example the one where
[Show spoiler]Hodaka runs up the exterior stairs to the top of the tower.
That's maybe the most seemless integration of 2D and 3D animation I've seen to date. The "senpai" thing
[Show spoiler]with Nagi
was truly funny. I liked Sugo. The voice acting was very competent.

Some scenes would actually benefit from 4K if sourced in that resolution.
[Show spoiler]Like the view of Tokyo from above in the final flight scene.

To my shame I have to admit that I failed to recognize Mitsuha and Taki (see Wikipedia). Those scenes make more sense now.

Now for the not-so-perfect parts:

It always disappoints me when movies (or series) feel the need to begin in a foreshadowing manner with a scene from later in the film (like already in Your Name). IMO it's either needless handholding of the audience, or just lazy writing if the plot can't stand on it's own without it. The voiceover was also a bit much, half of it just describing what was visible in the scene anyway. Towards the end of the movie there was again a scene with too much Shinkai-splaining voiceover for my taste.

As others have already mentioned, the film is heavy on plot devices, unlikely coincidences and contrievances.
[Show spoiler]The gun plotline, although contrieved in how it came about, was actually quite realistic in how Hodoka acted with it, IMO.
This also includes a number of minor implausible plot points when one starts thinking about it, for example
[Show spoiler]that Hodaka wouldn't notice that Suga and Natsumi have the same family name. (They have twitter accounts by the way.)

There was no
[Show spoiler]explanation of the rain. Or of the more-than-rain huge volumes of water (are those maybe sky wales?) that splashed down occasionally. For the first half of the movie I thought that maybe Hodaka was unconsciously some sort of rainmaker (a counterpart to the Hare no Onna), given how excited he was about the rain on the initial scene on the ship; which would have made for interesting dynamics with Hina. But that excitement wasn't really picked up again. In fact, it wouldn't have worked well with later parts of the plot.

The movie also evaded
[Show spoiler]any real indication, never mind examination, of the issues that caused Hodoka to run away from home. Given the seriousness of such a step, the motivation seemed awfully vague, and really just a plot device to get him to Tokyo alone and without support.

[Show spoiler]The "ecosystem" in the sky, the rain fishes, etc. were "just there" and seemed rather random. Being presented as a physical reality in the earth's atmosphere, it didn't fit well with the spiritual theme of a path to the netherworld, as alluded to in the scene where they jump over the Obon fire, and the Torii functioning as some sort of supernatural gate. Likewise, Hina's (and the fishes) dissolution. As presented, all of this doesn't add up to much more than some vague concepts thrown together, without fleshing them out enough to make any coherent sense.
Maybe this is better in the novel.

The kitten
[Show spoiler]was a bit too cartoonish and seemed more like a token merchandise object. That was somewhat compensated by the three-year-old version at the end.

Regarding the little kid who
[Show spoiler]noticed the rain fishes behind the window, for half of the movie I suspected that it is Sugo's kid, and that he's divorced. In retrorespect that scene feels a bit out of place due to the characters. I think it would have made more sense to do that scene with Mako-chan (Sugo's actual daughter).

The romance
[Show spoiler]doesn't work at all. Hina being (close to) 18 was totally believable for me, given the relative maturity with which she acted. I found the age combination of the two main characters refreshing, and that obviously Hodaka's crush on Hina was completely one-sided. When it turned out that she's actually younger than him, that didn't make much sense to me character-wise, and neither did I feel that it would make a romance between the two of them any more realistic. Furthermore, there were hardly any signs of Hina being romantically attracted to Hodoka. As a romance, this was quite badly developed. That it should last over the three-year gap at the end also seems quite farfetched. My disbelief remained highly unsuspended.

I wish they would stop with the boob jokes, it's getting really old. I wish for male protagonists in anime to gain just a little bit more self-confidence (Your Name was a lot better in that respect). After all these years I still don't get why those seem to be almost-mandatory tropes in anime.

The amount of product placement was embarrassing. The Big Mac one was especially cringy. Halfway through the movie I started wondering how much was actual product placement
[Show spoiler](somehow I don't think that Maker's Mark sponsored the scene of Sugo getting drunk on it to drown his bad conscience, but who knows)
, or whether it's rather some kind of social commentary by way of deliberately contrasting the world of brands we live in with the spiritual and nature-related aspects of the film. Maybe it's both, in a pragmatic way. It was nice though to see a lot of iPhones 5/5s/SE (still the best form factor).

The music direction was passable, but not amazing. There was an overuse of songs at emotional/climactic moments in a way that made them overly corny (another Shinkai habit). The music during the
[Show spoiler]scooter chase
seemed a bit off to me in style for the movie.

There were a few instances were the animated rain drops, when hitting down on a surface, seemed a bit too perfect (and maybe too large) and therefore artificial, but that's a very minor nitpick. Overall the animation was great and is certainly the hight point of the film.

Despite all the criticism, I enjoyed the movie. I hope that Shinkai gets to animate a lot more weather.

It was definitely what you say... but it felt so weak even in their attempt to create drama. Damn. I feel like I would have cut the movie more slack if at least the last 20 minutes or so didn't feel like it did. Visuals aside, I personally find little reason to revisit this.

"Your Name" still stands as one of the most impressive animated movies I have seen this century. I'm just still shocked a few days later that this movie felt so much like a copy/paste.

Lastly, and as klasma noted, can Japanese anime start moving on from boob jokes now? There are times when it is humorous but it really needs to just come to a halt for at least 5 years.

Glad not to be alone in this. I enjoyed it a lot up until Hina's sacrifice and then it seemed to lose its way with a rush job incoherent ending. And I didn't really understand why we needed an artificial "they didn't see each other for three years" coda which felt doubly stilted.

I think Shinkai can do better than this but he was clearly very determined to recapture the audience who enjoyed the last movie. Can't really blame him - still, the central idea was quite nice and there were many sweet moments.

I just came back from the movie theater today. I was expecting to watch the dub version, anticipated in disappointment that I was stuck to watch the movie in English dub since the subbed version was only available for one day, only to be surprised that it was the subbed version!

As for the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a rather simple plot and felt like Shinkai didn't want to take a big risk on this film and decided to make a movie similar to Your Name that shared similarities. I wasn't fully convince with the romance between the two characters, almost a bit forced and lack a everlasting impact. What I really liked about the movie is the ending. Finally somebody had the guts to do the "wrong" thing and didn't give a damm about the consequences that lead to it even though it was rather selfish. It's like I don't give a damm about anything and everything else as long as I get her back.

As for the animation quality, damm that really set the bar high by combining CGI and hand drawn animation on creating the most detailed and convincing Tokyo I have ever seen.

I'm glad I went to see this movie with my brother, we both like it.

I'm going to pre-order the 4K version for sure. I kinda regret not getting Your Name on 4K even though neither movie is native 4K, but the HDR should make up for it.

Added the TOHO animation STORE exclusives and pictures of the Amazon and Rakuten exclusives to the OP.

Those TOHO exclusive glasses are tempting.

Added UK (standard and collector's), Swedish and Finish releases. UK BD has a tentative release date of September 28.

Finish BD tentative release date is July 15 according to Discshop.fi, but I don't expect that it will release on that date.
