Its not the animation style, I love shows that are older - Star Blazers, Speed Racer, gatchaman and it's ilk. And I love that gritty nihilist war drama, so that wasn't it. It just wasn't the show for me - but that didn't keep me from trying!

So when I saw War in the Pocket was on sale at TRSI for 10 bucks, and I found reviews praising the hell out of the show - I figured what the hell. A 6 episode OVA, I figure the worst I was out was the price of a Mocha and 3 hours of my life.

I liked it! I really liked it!

Maybe it was the short run time? Maybe it was the smaller, more personal story? No idea - but I really liked it. The emotional "war sucks" message, the realistic take (well, as realistic as you can get in a Giant Mecha series ), the well written characters, the gorgeous art - this thing was great from top to bottom.
Each to his own. War in the Pocket depressed me so much that I only ever watched it once. It's not that it wasn't good or that I didn't like it, it's just that it really got me down

If you like 0080 you might also really like 08th MS Team

I loved War in the Pocket for it's depressing nature lol. I've watched it like 2 or 3 times, but I definitely give it some time before a rewatch.

I would recommend 08 MS Team to you as well. It's another with the Gundam name that is a bit different from the rest. 12 episodes and absolutely gorgeous old animation.

I swear I hadn't even seen this when I made the recommendation as well. Funny.

War in the Pocket is some of the best Gundam ever.

Give Gundam 00 a try one day, though.

G00 is all about "WAR SUX MAN!", so it will get you in all the right places. SEED and it's sequel are sort of in that vein, but not as grim as other Gundam titles.

Probably the first time I’ve seen someone refer to 00 as “goo.”

I'm currently watching G00, on the last disc for season two (funny enough, as I typed this the disc just froze for a moment. Hm.)

The animation has been good, though the characters haven't really stuck with me. It has more of the standard political fare you'll find in many Gundam shows. It's decent but I don't know if I'd rank it up there with titles like 0080 and 08th MS Team.

Oh, I can totally see that. I really liked the shattered naivete vs the horrors of war aspect of the show. War in the Pocket will probably sit next to Grave of the Fireflies and When the Wind Blows on my shelf as a "I really like it, but it doesn't get re-watched a whole lot" disc.

Okay, okay - fine. I'll check out some reviews and keep my eye out when there's a Sunrise sale (if Sony keeps the TRSI themed sales around in the future, that is). I mean I do want to like the series - on paper it should be right up my alley. I just need to find the alchemist stone that works for me.

G00 is on Hulu, so you can watch it there. I believe it's also on Crunchyroll and Funimation.

I watched Gundam 00 recently, and I liked it fine. I liked Season 2 more than I was expecting given what I'd heard about it but the movie was pretty lackluster (basically just repeating the main message from Season 2).

G00 I hated it when I first watched when it aired on SYFY. During a rewatch I actually enjoyed it enough to buy the Blu-ray.

I’m thinking it to me is one of those shows the weekly watch threw off my original viewings enjoyment of it.

Indeed, Gundam is best when binged. It is serialized story-telling that lends itself to being watched in bursts or as much as one can enjoy in any sitting. I managed to watch all of SEED, DESTINY, G00, and Zeta in a single month. I thought about trying to watch Wing again, but it's sooooo dated and I just don't like it as much as the other newerish Gundam shows. I'm gonna dig up my After War BDs and get a start on watching that, later this month.

0080 is great because it's personal, has a small cast and eschews a lot of the wartime politics. I like the politics in these Gundam shows, but for some people it's harder to get into shows with 20 different characters coming and going at a dime and there are a lot of politics involved. That usually suggests a scaled down approach is better for you if you don't like that kind of large scale stuff.

Darn. I was hoping that it was on the official Gundam channel on youtube, they've got a bunch of full, subbed series over there, but G00 wasnt on the menu. I did find a couple episodes from . . . ahem. . . other sources, but they werent subbed so they did me no good.

Ah well, I'll rent the discs next time I'm at scarecrow video.

There is also G Gundam, if you're into insanity. It's good, it's just...also ridiculous.

I will say to anyone looking to get into Gundam right now, the current series The Witch From Mercury is a great entryway IMO. Completely fresh continuity, very likable characters, lots of fun worldbuilding, and you get to see what a Gundam universe looks like during peacetime for a good while before the actual fighting starts, instead of getting thrown into the middle of a war during the first episode.

On the edge of each disc, there are a set of numbers and at the end of it there should be “HV.” That indicates they are the corrected discs. If you order the set from Rightstuf, you don’t have to worry. They replaced all of the discs in their ultra sets for Seed. The standard edition already has the correct version so you don’t have to worry there.

One thing that does get to me a bit is that Crunchyroll has the HD broadcast version on their site but the Home Video version for Destiny. Someone should let Crunchyroll know. They need to update and add the Home Video version for Seed.
