don't know if they do anything special, but anyone can reduce the file size to anything, it just means accepting a crappier image and less features (playback options).

Of course, they say they can reduce file size without losing quality

Apparently not at the world’s largest media and entertainment event which includes both conferences and exhibits…
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheNABShow

After having checked both the I’s (in case they were using their former company name) http://nab13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/exh...=alpha&alpha=I and the B’s (for Beamr Video)…
http://nab13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/exh...=alpha&alpha=B ...there’s nothing on either list.

On the other hand, ATEME will be there -
http://nab13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/exh...m?exhid=102638

I was looking forward to seeing on how large a TV-sized screen Beamr would demo…without their algorithmic iteration breaking down with softening or blatant artifacts.

Not exactly 50% more efficient, early reports suggest h.265 30% to 35% more efficient than h.264

They are comparing the HEVC test model to the highly mature x264 encoder.

Apparently, opinions vary as to what looks better with moving images….
http://www.hhi.fraunhofer.de/fileadm...erformance.pdf

Average bitrate savings for equal PSNR are listed in Table VI. Average bitrate savings based on subjective assessment results are listed in Table VII.

Ilain should compare HEVC codec efficiency for the Basketball Drive sequence and then show the blinded samples to several members of his household for their input.

Yes, that is something else also to keep in mind for the future. Further refinements should be expected.

yeah but with every generation it is less and less, like Newton said "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.". Every new encoder is built on what was learnt from the earlier ones, even if it is a new CODEC. I expect any new HVEC encoder to have already been programmed with more or less what ever made the last AVC encoder better.

You’ll notice in the comments at the end of the article that an anonymous poster has now chimed in with an additional reference….for enlightenment.

In regards to the videoclip at the bottom of that ^ article, this pdf is as close as you will get to the details of DOCOMO’s HEVC scheme (which is actually far more scientifically forthcoming than anything published about the .RED codec….other than anecdotal viewer responses) –

The new video codec might allow 4K easier on disk but could the new codec also lead to 1080p broadcasts?

P-o-t-e-n-t-i-a-l-l-y, yes. It would take getting a lot of ducks in a row, but the first ‘duck’ would be HEVC. See - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...al#post7101353

^ Sap, I can’t find the photo on the internet….but will continue to look . Long story short, it provides a tie-in to the previously linked YouTube Crazy video because I’m in the Grammy audience (industry perk) and Cee Lo Green walks right past me…kind of a Penton (unmasked) post . Anyway, photo-related -

This 20” 5lb. *tablet* (which should bring a new meaning to the term “man bag”) may be coming out sooner than some expected, as apparently it could be shipping this summer -

Especially nice for serious photographers -

Come one, come all to the throwdown at Booth SU2724 (no, it's not a cage fight between RED and Sony)
