Best UHD is the Japanese Toho release, as it does not have the increased brightness and washed out detail that the US/UK/FR UHDs have (same encode across all 3), but still not the best release, IMO. Has English subtitles, though the NA/UK discs have a more updated translation which is superior to what is on the Japanese release (tons of changes, big and small), so there's that.
I know it's been a while, but if you happen to stumble back onto this thread I was wondering if you could share with us which is the best 1080p blu ray that also has English subtitles? Looks like the Italian Dynit release doesn't.

It’s an Italian release, it doesn’t, but it’s not too hard to sync them.

Best release with English subs is the NA/UK/AU BD, all the same disc. Overall better compression than JP BD and now low pass filter.

Thanks. Such a pity they messed up all the UHD releases for this movie. I saw it in theaters and it looked great as a standard 1080p but was hoping to be even more blown away with the UHD, but looks like that's not to be.

Looking for information about the Scandinavian releases. I want to know if these use the theatrical version or home video version. If somebody could confirm which version is included, it would be very much appreciated.

I'm still on the hunt for a decent/good quality release of the theatrical version.

I saw this at the theater a few months before Covid 19 put everybody's normal lives on indefinite hold and omg was it gorgeous but like a lot of others I think Your Name was better from a story telling point of view and the characters were more interesting.

I don't know about this. In a serious way. I'm not much of a Shinkai guy but I saw this theatrically and enjoyed it. However, my weeb bros who are Shinkai guys refused to see this because they were of the opinion that Your Name is his apex.

I'm afraid to see Your Name as, well, I've got the opposite reaction. I enjoyed the normal Shinkai stuff, like Garden of Words, but WwY seems like the apex to me because of how different it was from the normal Shinkai style.

Does Your Name also break the Shinkai mold?

No. Not at all. If anything, it's overboard Shinkai much in the same way Transformers films are for Michael Bay.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices is still his most "unique" or "creative" film in his career, and arguably his best.

I personally don’t consider blatantly ripping off Studio Ghibli with such a boring film to be “creative.” I’m not even a huge Shinkai fan, but WWY is easily his best film overall, despite being very unoriginal.

Meh, I found WWY just a so-so film; I remember being quite disappointed with it as I was coming out of the theater I originally saw it at. I like most all of Shinkai's other stuff better. Your Name definitely on top by far, Garden of Words was great too, and I'm a big fan of Children wh Chase Lost Voices as well.

With higher action, including an ode to Gun-kun, a more active romance, and an astonishing amount of counter-culture, WwY sticks out like a sore thumb to me in Shinkai's oeuvre.

Really not what I was expecting after Garden of Words, while enjoyable, was centered around a guy sitting on a park bench.

Garden of Words had the potential to be good, until around the 40 minute mark where I guess Shinkai wanted to clock out for the day. It's as if he just ran out of time and tried to wrap everything up in less than five minutes. The movie just...ends.
