Default My new theater build has begun...

It's been a long wait since my last theater went out of commission following my divorce, but I finally found a house to build a new one, and construction has commenced.

On Thursday, everything was measured out, materials were moved from the garage to the backyard and basement, and most of the walls frames were built.

Then yesterday, most of the walls were put into place and attached.

There are still some areas that need adjustments (like the window areas, and where the equipment rack will go), but the basic shape of everything is pretty much there now.

More framing work to come on Monday, and maybe Tuesday. Then HVAC work will be done this coming Friday.

This is the basic layout the basement will be.

The wall/door in the bottom right will be in line with the stairs though.

And the toilet/vanity will be on the bottom wall, not the side wall.

The one wall to the left that has a gap between the framing and foundation is like that because there will be shelves built into the wall that wrap are next to and above the equipment rack. Similar to what I had in the previous theater.

I don't know you well enough to either wish you condolences or congratulations on your divorce. As someone whose been through it, and an enthusiast of this pastime, I know that sometimes a bit of both are in order....

You obviously know what you are doing, so I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Were you able to salvage some gear, or was this an opportunity to upgrade?

Well, I don't generally believe in divorce, so I wasn't thrilled with it. But, it's been 2.5 years, so it's not a big bother to me at this point. I do hate how it affects my daughter (5), however.

I was able to take pretty much everything that wasn't tied to the structure. So, Projector, Speakers, Subs, AV components, Acoustic treatments, and even some cables.

I got 3 of the 6 theater recliners I had. She demanded the other 3 out of spite, and then later sold them (I offered to buy, but she wouldn't). So, I found 4 very similar chairs on facebook for a better rate than what she asked for them).

So, not really much as far as upgrades - not that I felt I needed much. But, I do have the extra seat now, and I got another pair of surrounds so that I have a pair for each row.

The room itself is a slight upgrade. The width and height are almost the same, but I gain a few feet of length.

I was very fortunate not to have kids with my first wife and even more fortunate to have 2 with my present wife. They are now both adults in university living at home. Our HT is well used and loved as a component of family time. My daughter in particular is a major horror fan and we are usually the two that stay up to watch a second feature after my wife and son tap out after the evening's comedy or drama fare..

I was able to get most of my stuff from the first go around. She claimed to have destroyed most of the rarer titles in my LD collection. The list surprisingly coincided with the titles her brother seemed to be missing. I can chuckle about that....now...

Most of the gear has been replaced a few times over.. although I still use the mains from that original system (PARADIGM Monitor 7s) as my L/R surrounds.

I own a construction company and I am so jealous! I have 3 extra rooms but I have 4 kids (3 married) and 6 grandkids (2 more on the way) that stay over a lot. Damn, I wish we had basements here in So Cal. It's looking great and I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

Hardware is pretty much all set for now. It's what I had previously.

Seymour AV Center Stage XD - 120" (wide) 2.35:1 screen
JVC NX7 projector
Yamaha A3050 receiver
JTR 228 Noesis for LCR (3)
Klipsch KPT-8000M for Side (4) and rear (2) surround.
Niles DS8HD ceiling speakers for Atmos (4)
JTR Captivator Pro 2400 subs (2)
Crown XLS 5000 Amp for subs
Behringer thing for subs too (can't recall the name right now)

The usual sources for movies (Nvidia Shield) and games (PS5, Xbox One S) etc.

Nice! Pre-wiring should be easy. Always think ahead of what you may want to get/add down the road. I did mine back in 2005. At that time a 5.1 setup was the way to go but I did a 7.2 behind the walls. So glad I did. I have access to put in a single pair of atmos speakers at some point but my next upgrade will be a projector. I've been using my JVC RS-25 for over 11 years now and it still hasn't given me a really good reason to upgrade it (but I probably will by end of next year).

I bought a sub from a fellow AVS member who had a basement HT, which was built from scratch. He went with a focus on soundproofing the build. What struck me was how "pure" the sound was. Now he had acoustic treatments and calibrated his audio....but, taking the room (to some degree) out of the equation by soundproofing the walls and ceiling really helped provide a solid foundation for hearing (less altered) sound interacting with the room.

I didn't realize you were a local KC guy. Unfortunately, I've done a terrible job be involved in the local HT group and associated outings etc.

David sold me his JTR S-2. I drove from KC to Chicago and back....on the road by 5am and returned to my house at 9pm. It was worth it.

Some images of the soffit as it is. I am going to get the front moved up to the next joist. As it is, my lights (which will be in the soffit) would be right on top of the screen.

HVAC was installed Friday. Not sure anyone cares to see that.

Electrical and plumbing for the bathroom should start next week.

I need to get the rest of my speaker wire ran, and some ethernet to where my rack will be.

This is the snack/lobby area:
