COMPARISON

I really like the grain in StudioCanal release, but on the other hand, Shout! Factory offers wider aspect ratio.

How can they cock-up on the aspect ratio, reminds me of the old DVD Days.

There's no indication to show that the Shout!'s framing is correct over the Studio Canal release. Even if it is the upgrade in quality is worth it for such a small difference.

Who claimed that Shout!'s framing "is correct"??? I was just pointed out that it offers wider framing. Besides that, I totally agree that its worth to upgrade it. Although I'm still going to keep my SF release.

The post literally after yours asks "How can they cock-up on the aspect ratio...", I wasn't implying you did, just giving a possible explanation to that quoted post. Just that the difference was negligible and the improvement in quality was worth a bit of wiggle room with the framing.

I received an e-mail today from Studio Canal about the "flickering" and the drop outs in various scenes. Picture quality is awful...they must be blind!

Here ist the the full lenght reply to my complain.

Thanks for your email.

We wanted to let you know that we have now completed a thorough investigation into the issue you have addressed. Five quality assurance testers at Testronics have carried out a fast track investigation for us, using a test matrix of UHD players, with a combined UK market share of more than 97%. They tested the disc at multiple stages within the disc production workflow and exceeded standard studio testing approaches. Testing included SDR, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision passes. The playback quality was concluded to be of an acceptable level and consistent with similar projects. Overall, they were unable to recreate the playback issues despite testing on over 60 player and screen combinations. All indications are that the issues are likely to be caused by incorrect setup or anomalous device compatibility issues.

Therefore, to help us conclude why you have been experiencing problems, would you please be able to provide more information on what setup you are using?

Dear Studio Canal:

Just get David Mackenzie/Fidelity in Motion to do your bigger BD and UHD releases. You’re poor at compression and knowing you got him to do a release for you that was highly regarded is a slap in the face. Either that or get stuff together.

I don´t know if this has been reported before.

I just saw that when I was ripping the soundtrack CD onto my computer today.

This is the initial release of The Fog – Collector’s Edition (4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray) from England I´m talking about.

It is either Janet Leigh or Jamie Lee!

This is really embarassing.

And the edition gained a lot in value.
It´s up on Amazon UK for 190GBP!

StudioCanal's release is slightly cropped, but has more natural grain, with detail being better. It's also more colorful with deeper blacks (yeah, I know, black crush complaints an' all that).

Each to their own, I guess.

Can someone jog my memory, was The Fog one of the titles (BD and UHD) with PAL Speed-up audio?

If one wanted to play around in Audacity and change the pitch, what would be the appropriate setting? lower it by 0.679 semitones?
