As I understand it, the 'Auto' setting on the Sony UBP-X700 applies baked-in noise reduction on disc playback: see page 93 of this thread for an explanation.
I have a Sony UBP-X700 but don't have access to it at the minute. Pretty sure I had to select the 'Direct' setting to avoid the above issue. |

Is there a page in this thread that has a list of recommended settings changes from the factory default? Thanks.

I was so pissed at this player for being junk that I sold my entire 4K collection to my neighbor. Now that I took it back to factory settings and didn't connect it to the internet all of the problem discs play without incident. Luckily for me, but not the neighbor, he is getting a divorce so he sold me my 4K collection back.

I've typically found this player works fine until you play a BD-100.
Like clockwork, it locks up at the layer change (usually toward the end of the film) on every BD-100. But the work around I find is to just hit the stop button on the remote, and eject the disc, then close the tray and resume. It will play without any issue. It isn't ideal, but it sounds like a longer process than it really is, especially if the disc has an auto-resume function. Eventually I plan to just upgrade the player to something else. |

In my experience the first time playing a BD-100 disc in this player is the worst. I've had three discs that required me to stop playback and take the disc out to work properly (Interstellar, Ready Player One, and Mortal Engines). I rewatched all these recently and while there was some stutter all three played all the way through without even requiring me to pause them.
That being said, there have been a lot of BD-100 discs that have not given me any problems. For example, I've never had any problems with Lionsgate discs, and I've played many of them more than once. |

I think I've discovered the infallible hack to make this player work well: turn it on *after* turning on the TV and make sure the TV is already set to the player's HDMI input. Otherwise it gets confused and acts up, but it's been smooth as anything whenever I've followed that procedure.

But my impression is that consoles might handle disc surface imperfections better than the Sony x700 since they seem to have better hardware specs for error correction, etc. |

I've had that happen on certain discs, like 3:10 to Yuma. Have you tried other discs? If it happens on everything you play I'd be worried.

My player makes a loud whirring, almost grinding noise when it’s loading up a disc and sometimes won’t play the disc, I just get a black screen. It took me 20 minutes to get a disc (standard Blu) to play before. I’ve searched everywhere for people who had the same issue but so far can’t seem to find any answers. Does anybody here have an idea what could be wrong or how I can possibly fix it?

Do you get the loud grinding noise too, or does the player just refuse to play the disc? I’m worried that the player is just gonna stop readings discs entirely very soon.

Just buy a Panasonic. Given the price ratio between the players and the media for them, none of the 4K players are that expensive. I honestly don't understand why people continue subjecting themselves to the frustration of the Sony's which don't handle triple-layer discs properly.
