As I understand it, the 'Auto' setting on the Sony UBP-X700 applies baked-in noise reduction on disc playback: see page 93 of this thread for an explanation.

I have a Sony UBP-X700 but don't have access to it at the minute. Pretty sure I had to select the 'Direct' setting to avoid the above issue.

Whenever I turn Dolby Vision on, the displays says I'm viewing the film at 60p. Is that normal? I have the "24p Output" option set to on whenever it plays UHD.

Thank you.

This is my understanding as well.

It may be your TV isn't set to enable a 24p mode or doesn't support it.

I was having problems with 4K discs freezing up on this player. I did a factory reset and didn't connect it to the internet and so far 5 of the 10 problem discs have played fine.

Is there a page in this thread that has a list of recommended settings changes from the factory default? Thanks.

I was so pissed at this player for being junk that I sold my entire 4K collection to my neighbor. Now that I took it back to factory settings and didn't connect it to the internet all of the problem discs play without incident. Luckily for me, but not the neighbor, he is getting a divorce so he sold me my 4K collection back.

Well it is back to acting up again. SACD is the only format that the player doesn't choke on. I am waiting for that to stop soon.

I've typically found this player works fine until you play a BD-100.

Like clockwork, it locks up at the layer change (usually toward the end of the film) on every BD-100.

But the work around I find is to just hit the stop button on the remote, and eject the disc, then close the tray and resume. It will play without any issue.

It isn't ideal, but it sounds like a longer process than it really is, especially if the disc has an auto-resume function.

Eventually I plan to just upgrade the player to something else.

In my experience the first time playing a BD-100 disc in this player is the worst. I've had three discs that required me to stop playback and take the disc out to work properly (Interstellar, Ready Player One, and Mortal Engines). I rewatched all these recently and while there was some stutter all three played all the way through without even requiring me to pause them.
That being said, there have been a lot of BD-100 discs that have not given me any problems. For example, I've never had any problems with Lionsgate discs, and I've played many of them more than once.

I think I've discovered the infallible hack to make this player work well: turn it on *after* turning on the TV and make sure the TV is already set to the player's HDMI input. Otherwise it gets confused and acts up, but it's been smooth as anything whenever I've followed that procedure.

I've had the same experiences with BD-100s from major studios that were made in Mexico (Universal, Warner, Paramount) but the Mexico made Criterions and Lionsgate UHDs were fine. I went as far as re-purchasing some titles from UK.. Avoided the US Godfather and got the EU set for the same reason..

UGH! So that's why my blu ray discs are acting up on my Sony 4k blu ray player!

Is this the case with gaming consoles?

I don't have a console that plays UHDs but what i've read is they have different issues on the HDR/Dolby Vision, playback stability side that require firmware updates, etc.

But my impression is that consoles might handle disc surface imperfections better than the Sony x700 since they seem to have better hardware specs for error correction, etc.

Updated the player and now watching Uncut Gems 4K. The player is now making a low steady sound and it's vibrating. Playback is going fine so far.

How concerned should I be? Thanks.

I've had that happen on certain discs, like 3:10 to Yuma. Have you tried other discs? If it happens on everything you play I'd be worried.

My player makes a loud whirring, almost grinding noise when it’s loading up a disc and sometimes won’t play the disc, I just get a black screen. It took me 20 minutes to get a disc (standard Blu) to play before. I’ve searched everywhere for people who had the same issue but so far can’t seem to find any answers. Does anybody here have an idea what could be wrong or how I can possibly fix it?

There is no fix to be honest. Happens with me all the time. I have to switch off main plug and switch it on and then it plays the disc or else it shows a blank screen. Its very frustrating.

Do you get the loud grinding noise too, or does the player just refuse to play the disc? I’m worried that the player is just gonna stop readings discs entirely very soon.

Just buy a Panasonic. Given the price ratio between the players and the media for them, none of the 4K players are that expensive. I honestly don't understand why people continue subjecting themselves to the frustration of the Sony's which don't handle triple-layer discs properly.
