Don't want to say I told you so, but....

They really need to announce a replacement disc scheme PDQ. That would perhaps help save some Season 12 sales from being cancelled, and maybe more importantly it would bolster confidence in the range going forward.

The extras breakdown seems to have a few errors as well
  • On Target: Terrance Dicks (1080i; 21:28) is another really interesting "backstage" piece documenting the writer and some of the ideas he provided to the series. Isn't this specifically about the target novels rather than his work on the series?
  • Built for War (480i; 39:37) looks at some of the admittedly goofy aspects of this story, including some of the outlandish characters. This is actually a retrospective of all the Sontaran stories.

The section dedicated to Baker's pre-Who work is actually as longer than the main review of the episodes, (which is almost entirely about the low budget effects) and there are only screenshots from Robot and Ark. You'd think that a few screenshots of the film sequences would be included.

It's almost like the reviewer didn't watch it and patched their review together from guessing and googling. Hmmm.

Almost.
"Outlandish characters"... in The Sontaran Experiment? Really?

I'm almost embarrassed for the reviewer.

Nope. It's about Terrance Dicks' and his contribution, both as writer and commissioner, to the Target Books line.

The review for the US set has a glaring omission.

Nowhere does it explain that Elizabeth Sladen is absolutely adorable.

A shocking oversight.

Once again gin, late(ish) nights and forum posting after an 11 hour shift at work prove a lethal mix...

So I'm guessing then that the UK set will have the same audio issue with The Sontaran Experiment as the US set? That's not a great way to start things off. At least if we heard an explanation. If it's unavoidable due to source materials, I can understand it. If it's a screw-up, it should be fixed.

The UK set will have the audio issue, but not the missing subtitles.

From Steve Roberts:

Quote:
The problem is a polarity reversal of one channel of the audio. When one speaker cone is pushing out, the other is pulling in. Instead of centring the audio midway between the speakers, it throws it completely out into wide stereo. It might sound acceptable on a TV depending on your setup, but if you try to listen on headphones, it will probably make you feel ill (I'm not kidding).

Because surround information is encoded as phase differences, if you listen on a surround setup, all of the sound will come from the rear speakers. If you try to mitigate this by doing something like switching your system to All Speaker Mono, you'll get silence, because the amplifier adds together the left and right channels to create a mono channel before sending it out to each speaker. Because the two channels are completely out of phase, adding the two together completely cancels out the signal, producing silence. There is no good way to fix this, save listening in stereo mode and unplugging your left hand speaker and moving your right hand speaker to be in front of the TV.

Got my notification too. Zoom releases, for me usually get here the next day, or latest the day after that. This is looking good for a weekend viewing!

Anyone who went through the Day of the Doctor sound fiasco knows this all too well. It's the consistency of the incompetence I find most impressive.

There's a reason I held off on my pre-order.

So maybe I'm misunderstanding this, but can they correct this? It says we can't correct this in our own setups, but can the studio fix this? If not, was this on the old DVDs? If they can fix it, then why won't they? This needs to be addressed.

In fact, why is it not being corrected for the UK market before they ship them out, if they know about the problem now?

It can be fixed as the DVD didn’t have this audio error.

I guess the issue was the BDs had been replicated and the sets were in the supply chain before the error was spotted. Pity no one with the American set pointed it out as that is what delayed the UK release to fix the subtitle fault.

Of course the BBC can fix the fault if they want to. However if they do then as with faulty Doctor Who titles in the past they will make you mail in the affected disks to swap for a new one. They don’t do a recall on product out in retail, so it’s up to you to know there is a fault and if they do an exchange programme.

Given this is a limited edition they have probably pressed all the product they expect to so no point waiting to see if a repress fixes it.

You could always waited for the rumoured Australian release and import that assuming they go back and fix the masters to any future release or new pressings are okay.
