Disney Daisy Ridley swims the English Channel in Young Woman & the Sea (Trudy Ederle biopic)

Disney Takes Plunge On ‘Young Woman And The Sea’; ‘Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley, ‘Kon-Tiki’s Joachim Rønning Team On Tale Of First Woman To Swim English Channel

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Disney’s live action team is negotiating for Daisy Ridley to star and Joachim Rønning to direct Young Woman and the Sea, a Jeff Nathanson-scripted drama based on the book by Glenn Stout that chronicles the daring journey of the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel. Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle made the 21-mile swim in 1926.

Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are producing. Disney is eyeing Disney+ as the landing place for the picture.

Pic brings all of the participants back into the Disney fold. Ridley starred in the three Star Wars films, episodes VII through IX. The project came to Disney out of turnaround at Paramount, and Bruckheimer brought it to the studio where he produced the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Rønning directed 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Nathanson wrote it. Rønning has further experience shooting on the water with another true story, 2012’s Oscar nominated Kon-Tiki. He most recently directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for Disney.

Nathanson sparked to the project several years ago, becoming as obsessed as he was when he found the memoir of Frank Abagnale Jr and turned his years as a charming young con man into the Steven Spielberg-directed Catch Me If You Can. Bruckheimer, who had the U.S.’s biggest box office bright spot in 2020 with Bad Boys For Life, was also dogged in keeping the project alive, and now they are eyeing a second-quarter 2021 production start.

The daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan, Ederle was a competitive swimmer who won gold in the 1924 Olympics when she decided to attempt crossing the channel. She undertook the feat after first swimming 22 miles from Battery Park in New York to Sandy Hook, NJ, setting a record that stood for 81 years. She contracted with two newspapers and sold her story, thereby financing her quest. There was actually a race among women who would be first to cross as only five men had done so before.

She did it with help from her family: with sister Meg, she constructed a two-piece swimsuit — unheard of in the 1920s when skirt lengths were below the knee and ordinary swimsuits looked like summer dresses. They also used candle wax to seal her goggles to make them leak-proof. All this helped only so much as she struggled against waves, winds and treacherous waters to become world famous when she reached shore. She had shattered centuries of female stereotypes and was given a ticker-tape parade upon her return to New York, where 2 million cheered her. Her feat was largely forgotten soon after, as the world moved on.

SOURCE
This was announced awhile back, but of course no one made a thread for it. The director has recently shared posts on social media revealing that the film is being prepped now. Also, Daisy Ridley has recently kept her hair short which would be required for the role.

Very excited for this. The director of Kon-Tiki is a good choice, and seems like another physically demanding role for Daisy Ridley.

According to the report, Disney is planning on releasing this on Disney Plus.

She's had several projects in the works since TROS. And while this thread was just recently created, this movie and Daisy's involvement were announced many months ago.

Well, that’s a silly thing to say and unfortunate for that to be the first reply in this thread. Why would anyone think that she would “disappear” after starring in a billion dollar hit in which she gave her best performance and is the most proud of?

Anyway, just so you know, and for anyone else who would like an update:

She just made a thriller with Ben Mendelsohn last summer that’s due out this year: The Marsh King’s Daughter

And is set to star in a film produced by Ridley Scott and directed by his son Jake: First Ascent. She should be filming that either before or after Young Woman.

And she just produced and starred in a little indie film. And recently signed on to the sci-fi/thriller Mind Fall.

Plus other projects in development that may or may not happen:

A thriller by Radio Silence, The Ice Beneath Her, and a post-WWII drama that I was most anticipating since it would star three of my favourite actresses: Women in the Castle.

Like I said, good for her. Only reason I said it was because I wasn't aware of the projects she was involved with and because the only movie that came out since TRoS featuring her was that failed movie with Tom Holland.

Anyway, I grabbed a copy at a local used book store (Disney needs to make sure it sees a re-issue at some point).

She was never the best part of the sequel trilogy. Not when Boyega, Tran, Isaac, Driver, Dern, Del Toro, Nyong'o, and the original cast outshone her at every turn. She just doesn't have the charisma nor the charm you need to be a leading lady. Ok, her acting was a lot better than Hayden Christensen in the prequels but that's not saying much. At least Christensen proved he can be a good actor without Lucas' meddling. I haven't seen anything from Ridley to show she has got what it takes.

The director, Joachim Ronning, at the TRoS premiere: “joachimronning For me, as with many filmmakers, it all started with Star Wars. Return Of The Jedi was the first one I was old enough to see in a theatre - and the first time fellow moviegoers had to shush me. I was so excited I couldn’t keep it in. It was electrifying! And still is. Last night at the world premiere of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker we traveled back in time, to that galaxy far away. Luckily, Amanda was there to shush me #theriseofskywalker @disney”

Tilda Cobham-Hervey And Stephen Graham Join Daisy Ridley In Disney’s ‘Young Woman And The Sea’

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: I Am Woman star Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Stephen Graham are set to co-star opposite Daisy Ridley in Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea. Joachim Rønning is on board to direct with Jeff Nathanson writing the script and Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman producing. The film will premiere on Disney+.

It’s based on the book by Glenn Stout that chronicles the daring journey of the first woman, Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle (Ridley), to ever swim across the English Channel in 1926. The daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan, Ederle was a competitive swimmer who won gold in the 1924 Olympics when she decided to attempt crossing the channel. She contracted with two newspapers and sold her story, thereby financing her quest. There was actually a race among women who would be first to cross as only five men had done so before. Cobham-Hervey will play her sister.

Cobham-Hervey is coming off her critically-acclaimed role as musician and activist Helen Reddy in I Am Woman. Her other recent credits include Hotel Mumbai and Burn. She is repped by CAA and Anonymous Content.

Best known for roles in Boardwalk Empire and Peaky Blinders, Graham was most recently seen in Marvel’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the Tom Hanks World War II pic Greyhound. He is repped by ICM Partners and LINK Entertainment.

Good casting with Stephen Graham. It seems likely that he’ll play Trudy’s swimming coach.

One of the few actresses right now who really gets fit for her parts. You barely see it under all that Jedi-type garb. Wonder if she'll put in the same physical work for this athlete story. Wish Motoko Kusanagi had looked that good. Those artificial muscles functioned like real ones, so it would have made sense for them to be more pronounced. But Johansson is too famous to have that asked of her.

Haven't noticed John Boyega after Star Wars. The only ones are Adam Driver and the guy who played Poe, who is in everything.
