These subs use 1" thick HDF for their boxes and use 9 coats of lacquer for their finish. Here is an example of the quality of the finish.

It is a good idea. If you can, reduce the width of the picture to less than 750 pixels so that it fits on the page. You can use Photoshop Elements or other basic photo editing programs to do it.

It's a treat that this brand of speaker, let alone brand of sub has it's own thread. I have the Bravus 8D and right now for the room I'm in it's more than adaquate. Nice tight bass, power, and a remote control to top it off. I was even able to add my sub as a device to my H1.

I have been wondering about the talked about 2 sub set up.

Does anyone know off hand if let's say mixing a tight pushing sub, and a "boomy" sub will sound like the best of both worlds?

Which would be better as the "main" sub?

I saw the picture where mutiple subs should be placed but will it matter much if one is next to the fronts and the other behind or next to the seating area? Like behind or next to the couch.

I'll be poking my head in other threads to gather info, I just figured I'd start here since it's a brand specific thread.

I started almost a year ago with a 7.1 system, 5Ts (fronts), 5C (center), 5DB (surrounds), 6IC (back surrounds) and a single Bravus 10D. The system is spot on beautiful. No need to tout Aperion praises, you're already there...

When I started designing my system, I spent way too much time at my local home theater stores. One thing that stood out for me (and my wife) is I wanted a clean, accurate bass that blended nicely with our room. No end-table sub was going to work for us. Luckily the Bravus subs surfaced at the same time, and my search was over. My only choice was the 10D or 12D. Most people opt for the largest sub they can afford to get the lowest frequency. While I appreciate good bass as the next fanboy, I took a different approach. Since I’m a control freak, I opted for two 10” subs over the single 12”. It’s so true what is said about 2 subs, you have so many more placement options with two. I’ve crawled these subs from corner to corner, and they quite frankly sound great anywhere. Another advantage, and the only way I can describe it, two subs provide “a wall of bass”. I fill my theater room (13x20x8) from front to back with even, tight bass. Two identical subs are obviously not going to produce lower frequency, just more of it.

Back to your original question, two 8Ds or pairing an 8” with a 10”. Most experts (and I’m certainly not) recommend two identical subs. I’d rather not butcher their explanations, Big Daddy linked to (A Guide to Subwoofers (Part II): Standing Waves & Room Modes) in another thread. My suggestion is simple, have Aperion send out another 8D. No need to explain to you, but for others reading, Aperion lets you kick the tires for 30 days. If you aren’t satisfied, return it. They even pay shipping BOTH ways (no need to advertise here, check out their web site if interested). Place the 8D’s around your room. You will certainly notice fuller bass. You will even lower the gain a few dbs to both subs. The only remain question will be if it’s “enough” low frequency for you. I achieved a perfect combination of sound and accuracy with two 10” subs. Two 8” subs would not have been enough thump for me. Two 12” subs would have worked fine, but I knew it would be overkill (plus I could save $600 sticking with the 10Ds).

My room size is about 12x10x8 so I was told that an 8D was more than enough. So I went with that, right now my sub is at -7 and its got some bass, tight, and powerful. The only problem its very localized, it may be the location that needs changing to allow it to open up. Its a foot away from the left side of the wall, standing in front....left/front of my entertainment stand. I have a 12ft sub cable so I can move it around, my only gripe is the power cord might be short

Oh, how do you have your subs set up? One in front, one in back? Both at the sides of the room, like the picture dictates?

I've got both subs in the front, each between my fronts and TV. I have them roughly 8" from the wall. I found a few spots that do provide slightly enhanced bass, but I wasn't happy with the overall look. -7 db is certainly on the low side, if you're happy with that, good stuff. Interesting on the localized part. I would suggest doing some experimentation, moving the 8D around. If you find a sweet spot, you can always purchase a longer power cord.

the funny part is even at -7db it still makes the walls shake. So I'm doing something right. I'll put the volume up on it tonight and see what a difference I'll get. Since mine packs more of a punch that a boom, how are your 10s? Are they punchy or do they give lots of low rumbles?

Also I noticedy have the dipolar surrounds? How are those beasts? I was highly tempted to pick those up I instead got the 4Bs. Possibly if I go 7.1(.2) I might get those and push my 4Bs to the back. They're like 25lbs each.

The dipolars are certainly worth considering for a future upgrade. As you said, you can slide those 4Bs to the back for a sweet 7.1. I'm sure many would agree, no need to rush to 7.1. Besides the lack of dedicated 7.1 content, I find the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 negligible for most movies. Thankfully my Yamaha does a good job of matrixing.

I’m in a bit of transition right now. I'm upgrading my 5Ts and 5C for the 6Ts and 6C. I'm changing out my rear in-ceilings for a pair of 5Bs (inceilings will be relegated to my fitness room). I'm replacing my 60" Sony SXRD with a front projector. I should have all this complete over the next 3 weeks. I'll be sure to post pics on the Aperion site (plus blu-ray). I'm trying my hardest to keep this economy afloat.

I'm kinda getting info here and there.

My center and surrounds are @ 80hz, along with my sub. My towers are set @ 60hz.

Is that acceptable/"normal"?

80hz is certainly in the "normal" (THX) range. I have all my speaks set to 80hz. I've tested the 5Ts at 60hz previously, and honestly, didn't notice much change. Since I have two subs, I set all my speakers to small at 80hz.

You could set the front 3 to 60hz. That is pretty much what I have mine set too. I like mine set that way.. Preference seems like.

Aperion will suggest the 60hz to try first.

What would be the difference in setting the 5C to 60 vs 80hz?

I have my 5Ts at 60 (set to small), 5C to 80, and my 4Bs to 80 as well as my 8D set to 80.

The 5C has the same frequency response as the 5T's and will be a better blend of sound if all 3 are set to same crossover. 20Hz is a large difference but depending on the source material you are testing with, it may not hit that below the 80hz mark and when it does it will blend right in with the 5T's giving you the "bubble" of sound many Aperion owners describe.

I talked to someone via live chat, love Aperions customer service, and he helped me out with some crossover settings. He told me to put my front 3 at 80. Told me to put my sub at 80 as well. And also told me to push my 4Bs up to 110Hz. All this time I had them at 80. After changing said settings, I re did my levels with an SPL meter and off I went.

Nice work hagar. That 12D looks like a giant compared to my 8D. I had the 5Bs as fronts before I got the 'bug' and upgraded to the 5Ts, I haven't looked back. They take everything I throw at them and take it smiling. I see you're a screens off kind of guy. Again, nice work.

One question, I see you have one cable leading your sub then splitting to the L&R into the sub. Is that better connection than a single RCA cable?

That isn't my setup . That is a new owner but to answer your question, aperion says that using the y-cable gives you another 2-3db of volume.

I use one myself with my Intimus S12, i never really bothered seeing if there was a difference. I just figured that if you are going to have a "big papa" sub might as well get every little bit out of it.

Once I get the computers I am working on out of the way I will take some pics of the S12. I still have my older S8 which I haven't sent back yet maybe I can put them side by side so you can see that the S12 is twice the size of the S8.
