Check Your Media Asia/Mega Star Blu-rays

Going through my collection today and I have found two Media Asia/Mega Star (Hong Kong) blu-rays that no longer play (looks like they have bronzed):

ACCIDENT

I will continue to check my MA/MS discs and post if I find any other dead discs. When people say that physical media is dying I didn't think they meant literally

If you have Vengeance that will in all likelihood have already gone or will go. I'm on my second copy and it's having problems.

Sorry to hear about it. I'm not surprised that some of the HK discs have pressing issues.

To be totally fair, this is nothing new. Some LaserDiscs had major "disc rot" issues back in the day. Even brand new discs would have some serious A/V issues due to poor pressing quality. (The Sony DADC plant in particular was notorious for poor QC.) "Bronzed" CDs were also a thing in the early days of CDs. Even now, I have a few older CDs that don't quite want to rip properly, especially on newer drives that have much worse fault tolerance. It's really annoying.

Dang it, dang it, dang it. My Breaking News is dead. Doesn't even register as a disc in my Blu-ray drive. Definitely won't in the Oppo either.

Just checked my copy of Breaking News, and mine doesn’t work now either

My Accident looks fine and is recognised on my computer. Guess I better back it up...

Have checked the following discs and all are working:

EXILED
FIRE OF CONSCIENCE
MOTORWAY
REIGN OF ASSASSINS
WU XIA

Sounds like BREAKING NEWS is definitely the worst of the bunch, but my copy of ACCIDENT has the most "bronzed" look of the two bad discs so far. I would recommend backing up any/all MA/MS blu-rays at this point to be safe. I have a few more to check and will post my findings.

Not quite the same (I think?), but I have the Hui Brothers' 5 film Collection from K&R. Bought it new some time ago and was recently going to play them...only 4/5 films worked on my Blu Ray drive. The 5th will play on a regular player but does not register on my computer. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen?

Breaking News didn't work on the first Blu-ray player I tried it on but worked on the second one.

not tried mine, but did look over all my BDs last year.

i had planned to update my DVDs of some of these to BDs if they got reduced in price. have been following them for some months now. recently, i think 'exiled', 'life without principle' and 'accident' seemed to have gone OOP.

generally they seem to hold their value - 'election' films came down in price - but wondering now if there's knowledge with the company about these discs as they age, or if there's some new releases due somewhere, or if they're naturally going from the market.

Turns out my Accident does work, but I'll be backing up every Media Asia release I have as soon as this month's MakeMKV key goes up.

Have checked some discs from my collection.
The following discs are not working and all are bronzed.

Breaking News
Accident
As Tears Go By
Lady Cop & Papa Crook
Look for a Star
If You Are the One
Naked Weapon
Sniper
Isabella (not bronzed, but didn't work)

Also from Kam & Ronson:

On His Majesty's Secret Service
Kung Fu Chefs
The Accidental Spy (not bronzed, but didn't work)

What I could find out, that most of this discs had the same Mastering SID Code (IFPI LP01) and Mould SID Code (IFPI ML06), except for As Tears Go By (Mastering Code LW83, Mould Code FD88), Lady Cop…. (Mastering Code same, but Mould Code FD88) and The Accidental Spy (Mastering Code LN91, Mould Code FD88).

I will check more discs in the next days.

Just finished checking the rest of my MA/MS discs and all of these are working:

BODYGUARDS & ASSASSINS
INFERNAL AFFAIRS 1-3
THE WARLORDS

I think that is all I have. In the process of backing up all my discs, so if I come across any more dead ones I will post in this forum. Thanks to everyone for posting your findings.

I'm knocking on all the wood as I say this, but the MegaStar discs I've tried are working fine including Breaking News.

I've never really looked into it because I've never had issues of bronzing/disc rot, but are there specific things that cause it? Is it a natural fault of a bad pressing? Does weather and climate play any part?

From what I have read it seems to be the result of a bad pressing. I believe there was a plant in Taiwan that was responsible for a lot of the discs that have bronzed.
