Yeah that just isn't going to happen, a bios firmware update gone wrong can brick hardware, but an o/s is not going to do that imo. Been using computers for decades now and never even heard of that happening to be honest. And the poster can do what he wants but windows 7 is a dead and now unsecure o/s and shouldn't really be used anymore imo unless it is not connected to the internet.

All I can say is when I had gotten my new Dell system and downloaded the free Windows 10 upgrade at the time, when it was finished, the system turned off and never was able to turn it back on. Took to Best Buy, the head Geek Squad guy said he has seen that happening and they took the computer back. Luckily I wasn't out anything but my time. I am probably going to get a new system soon and will make the leap to Windows 11. I have not done my research but assume new PC systems come with Windows 11 already installed.

You'd assume correctly.

I bought a notebook and it had Windows 11, but I installed my preferred OS, anyway. They sure are trying to push people to accept and get used to 11 no matter what.

Also, Android app support on Windows 11 is a cool, neat feature though kinda useless since it doesn't have official support from the Google Play Store so that's more for games and things you don't mind using insecurely.

Now at this point in time, it's safe to say that Windows 11 is a "good" OS, so Microsoft dodged the bullet releasing another crappy OS like they did before.

95 - Good
98 - Good
ME - Bad (nightmareish OS)
2000 - Good (I loved this OS!)
XP - Good (nostalgic)
Vista - Bad (guess you could say it was good after the SPs)
7 - Good (this was like XP next level and MS should have supported for 10-20yrs and to be fair, they sorta did)
8 - Bad (technically it wasn't bad, they made it for touch screen use so...)
10 - Good (I'm using a non-commercial version with support till 2029)
11 - Good (wouldn't use it myself though)

Windows 7 still has extended support up until 2023 as per Wiki states.

It's a shame Microsoft drops support and makes a newer OS that's not really too different from the predecessor.

The only reason I had to switch from 7 to 10 is due to the drivers not working properly otherwise I'd still be using it.

I don't care. I'd rather keep using Windows 7 and be insecure than torture myself with Windows 10 (and even 11). I've been daily driving Windows 7 for over two years after support has ended and have never gotten a virus, so clearly I must be lucky here. Then again, I don't do shady things with my computer.

I don't know if I'm unlucky, but every single time I've used Windows 10, I kept getting stopped dead in my tracks by annoying notifications that I can't get rid of even with the solutions provided by Google searches (most recently the "Get Even More Out of Windows" screen telling me to use a Microsoft account, which had been bothering me ever since the 1909 update. I've tried everything I could find to get rid of it and no matter what I do, it kept coming back each month, so I rolled back to Windows 8.1 (with Classic Shell) on that computer. Before you ask me, I was using Windows 10 "Pro" edition when this happened.). At this point, if I HAD to use Modern Windows, I'd use Windows Server or Windows 10 LSTC over consumer Windows 10 or 11.

If I could pay Microsoft to keep Windows 7 supported indefinitely, much like what the US Military is doing to keep XP supported for them, I sure as hell would. The biggest problem with that is mainstream browsers will be cutting support for Windows 7-8.1 in a matter of months from now (February for Google Chrome, and sometime in the summer for Firefox), so evidently I'll have to upgrade. What I'll most likely do is use a Mac as a daily driver computer and keep my Windows computers as-is for legacy software. Before you say "Linux", let me tell you something: I use photo and video editors on a daily basis, and the ones available for Linux are mediocre at best. Not to mention the manufacturer of my printer (Canon) has supposedly been known for not caring about supporting it (and Linux support wasn't a priority when I was shopping for a new printer, and it wasn't like I had options since I specifically needed a printer that could print labels directly onto CDs/DVDs).

Sure, there'll likely be an independently developed web browser that will support Windows 7 for years to come (similar to New Moon for Windows XP), but the problem with that is Google is known for hating independent browsers, and it shows with how they've been torturing users of independent browsers (for example: Breaking reCAPTCHAs to the point where they're impossible to get past, not allowing DRM protected content to play on those browsers because they won't provide support for Widevine, and even blocking Google logins on certain browsers. Just to name a few examples on why this won't be practical).

In Windows 10, you only had to right-click on your Volume icon to change the speaker channel layout. In Windows 11, you have to also go to the Sound settings, click on "More sound options," click on the receiver and then click "Configure." It's just like how they hid the standard right-click options under "More options." More steps to do the same thing, all so they can bring the cleaner, "streamlined" stuff to the foreground. I fixed the "More options" right-click thing in regedit. But the audio channel layout thing is the most annoying part of W11 for me.

Was pleasantly surprised by the windows tabs, but haven't used them much yet.

How is autoHDR? Is it a reason to play games on Windows 11 or does it make their colors and gradients look worse? I downgraded to 10, hoping it would fix some video issues.

I wish I could take good photos to demonstrate what I'm about to say, but I never figured out photography, so they look way off. But I'm looking at a room in Remedy's Control right now with a brightly lit white wall in the background, toggling between SDR and autoHDR, and what's very obvious is that autoHDR preserves more detail. In SDR, the brightness of the light reflecting upon the wall (ray tracing) blows out the lines of the wall. In autoHDR, it stays bright but I am able to discern all the tiles and the texture of the wall from this distance where Jesse Faden is standing.

I have a 4 year old HP Laptop with an Intel I5-8250U CPU so nothing fancy by any means. I don't plan on buying another computer anytime soon as it doesn't get as much use anymore since I do most everything on my phone. Last year my HDD died so I swapped it for a WD Blue SSD and it is much better....but I upgraded to Windows 11 when I loaded the OS onto the new SSD and holy hell does it use more RAM compared to Win 10. I had 8 gigs and I regularly see my usage at 50-55% and up to 70 or 80% when I'm actually on it editing videos or whatnot. I should have upgraded the RAM last year but it didn't occur to me, well I finally added a 16 gig stick in slot 2 for a total of 24 gigs. Hopefully, that's all I have to do for the foreseeable future but a year in with Windows 11 and I still like it.

Windows 10 takes some getting used to but it's basically a far more advanced version of 7 really (and I really liked 7 too). You can work out those notifications if you like. You can do almost anything in 10, it's a wonderful OS just takes a lot of learning and some adjusting to really get to use it fully. The only thing I miss from 7 that can't be reintegrated and is missing in 10 is in folder navigation the single click on photos doesn't include resolution information in the lower box anymore. You have to hold hover the mouse over to get it.

11 on the other hand... I'm not ready for this, too many compromises at this point.

I hate the changes Windows 11 made to the right-click menu, removed Task Manager from a right-click on the Taskbar, and the combined speaker & network panel. Beyond that it's working fine.

Microsoft clearly states that Windoze 11 requires a minimum of 4 GB of RAM (while the 64 bit version of Windoze 10 requires a minimum of 2 GB of RAM), so the 100% increase in RAM needed to run Windoze 11 should not have come as any surprise.

I could easily switch to 11 hardware wise, but I see no meaningful advantage in doing so. 10 Pro seems more than adequate for my needs.

You are aware when editing videos copying and pasting that data is all stored in RAM. In all honesty if you are editing video you need at least 32GB RAM minimum.

I actually almost got two 16gb sticks instead of one but the smaller projects I'm actually working on this computer is so far working out well with 24gb. The large projects I use my work PC. When I was running with 8gb even the smaller ones were more or less a no go.

I hate all these things as well. But also, my printer doesn't work with Win11. My Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Portal only works in stereo, and doesn't properly register Atmos audio.
I have two displays. Win11 defaults to the wrong audio setting every time I load it, and I have to flip through THREE separate menu displays to disable the crappy lossy audio setting, back to my 1) original/wanted audio output source, and 2) with higher quality audio.
Even then, it doesn't work right and everything goes silent. So I have to reboot, then do all these menu settings AGAIN. Moreover, it doesn't register the audio codec settings for my LG C1, and won't play in surroundsound properly to get slightly better speaker audio.

This, as well as the annoyingly trivial removal of the right-click Taskbar menu options, and several annoying and innocuous faults and errors while using Win11 for NUMEROUS little issues, I hate it.
I also hate that they require constant online access, which is only for Microsoft to better track users and their activities. I prefer to try and remain more "anonymous", but Microsoft is getting closer and closer to making everything you do become a part of a bigger algorithm, and it's more difficult to disable personal settings that you don't want being sold to them and their constituents.

I shake my head at how it is an awful program for people with unique circumstances (such as multiple displays, multiple audio outputs and settings), while failing to even allow power-user options that have been around for ages.
Don't even get me started on the applet versions of key settings, such as the work involved getting to the ACTUAL Sound Control Panel, or tons of other Control Panel settings, which are buried under several other "stupid user" worthless windows before finally reaching "the meat and bolts" of what I want to get done.
It's insulting. And a disgrace to disrespect users of Windows products over the years. While also making a bigger effort to sell out the customer for their own profit, stripping privacy out of any potential equation. It's getting ridiculous, and I wish something could be done about it.

I guess I can give Windows 10 "Pro" one more chance if I can't manage to get LTSC, but this time I'll use every tweak I can to make it usable for me.

I'm editing 1080p videos with only 8GB of RAM and never had any issues, so I'm guessing you're working with 4K60 videos with Adobe Premiere, which I suppose makes this true. Then again I'm using proxy files to reduce memory consumption.

I am using 64 gb of DDR5 5600 Mhz RAM. I edit reality with it. I can expand to 128 GB if I need to edit the resultant alternate reality.

Except the bare minimum between Windows 10 and Windows 11 increased RAM requirements. You need at least 8GB RAM now to run Windows 11 before any apps. Assume with no apps 4-6GB of RAM is going to be used automatically which puts you in the 50% used range before running any app at all and depending on windows services running.

At this point depending on your app which will still move video cuts into RAM you need to be at 16GB Minimum.

I used Windows 11 today for an hour to do some stuff and the best I can say is "It's fine. It's a dumbed-down version of Windows 10."

I honestly hated using it and the UAC screen kept wanting me to always press the blue button (cancel) even when it was necessary. What the heck is wrong with Microsoft.

Example:

Is disabling the UAC screen the way to go? No, not really, but putting up with that bs isn't ideal either.
