DVDs on Blu-ray players vs. DVD upconvert players on HDTV ?

i have hdtv, i dont have a blu ray player yet,..i do have a dvd upconvert hdmi im using and for some reason it has a ghost like border on white edges when using 480p and is even worse in 720 p...so im using 480p to minimize the edge ghost effect (and i tried another brand dvd upconvert and it did the same thing)

my question is this, if i get a blu ray player and only play dvds(not blu ray disks) on it, will the picture quality be better than what im using now which is a panasonic upconvert hdmi signal ?

While most blu-ray players do support upconversion, you will not likely see a difference versus your current dvd player. If you really wish to eliminate the ghost-like border and fully enjoy the benefits of your HDTV, drop the money for a blu-ray player AND blu-ray movies.

It's the same.

Upsampling, unlike what most companies advertise it as increasing resolution of the video. It really is not (well techncally yes and no, very complicated techie stuff).

Upsamling looks better than normal DVD playback because of the fact that DVD is encoded at 480i which is 720 x 240, Progressive scan DVD players actualy double resolution of DVDs by deinterlacing DVDs back to their original 24 frame per second, 480p film encoding. Progressive scan DVD player deinterlacing is a very basic feild based decombing with blending. Upsampling players, use far better deinterlacing filters which improve video quality, the 480p video is then resized to 720p, 1080i, or even 1080p. Many Upsampling DVD players use deblocking filters with resizing which smooth out pixelizations, this improves video quality of DVD playback on large screen TVs. But for TV's 37" inches and below your upsampling player will look the same even if you set HDMI out to 480p.

Blu-ray movies are filmed in 1080p which means that video is actual HD, while DVD is only SD, no mater what you do to it.

As for your issue with HDMI, besure to have your connector on your player and TV plauged in good, check your player manual to see if there are setting you can monkey with to fix problem or TV manual to adjust collor settings etc..

The biggest benefit of an upscaling DVD player is the lack of Digital>analog>digital conversion

so is this ghost like border common? or do I have a defective tv? its brand new sony ...i dont know if its the tv or just dvd upconvert common problem, or if i should get a better dvd up convert player...

you make it sound like a blu ray player will fix the problem..i hope so, because i hope theres nothing wrong with my tv or dvd player or hdmi processor in my tv..

HD cable channels are perfect, no borders..and the hdmi cable is connected fully, and i already tried all the settings on the tv to reduce it the best i can

Im just worried, that if its the hdmi processor in the tv, that if i get a blu ray player that the same ghost border will exist. Im worried about that.

Sounds like it is the tv, is it LCD? If so it is light leakage, this will show up in the black areas only.

What are the settings set at on the tv?

In custom mode:

turn down the back light
Turn on powersaver mode On
Drop the brightness
try changing the color temp (I get the best blacks on warm1)

The PS3 upconverts and mine does so flawlessly. I'm watching on a Sony 40" lcd and the reg. dvds play in the PS3 with a huge increase in quality. Still not nearly as good as blu-rays of course.
I've never seen the edges or ghosting that you're talking about so I have no idea if it is your tv, player, or connections.

no its not edge enhancement. i tried that.

i cant plug the dvd player into another tv because i dont have another hdtv ,only a old analog tv....

its a sony wega 34' crt 16:9 hdtv 720p/1080i tv..the picture on hd cable is better than even $4000 lcd or plasmas ive seen at the store

its not "moving ghosting" like you see on lcds...its more of a "double highlighted white edge on bright objects" instead of a "ghost"

when i tried the s-video or component inputs it does the same thing, so i bought another dvd player and it was worse than the one i have now which is a very good one

but im just wondering if a bluray player will correct this?

problem is, if the problem is related to my hdmi processor input on my tv, then the blu ray will have the same double highlighted edge.

maybe i should goto a forum that specializes in my tv...its kinda hard to find though.

I watched Transformers DVD upconverted on my PS3 and it was as good as it will get, no ghost borders and a decent picture for a SDVD.....I do believe the PS3 does the best job upconverting SDVDs, and you can now get it for 399, so why not?

Yeah, you should try to find people who really know your TV. I bought a cheap dvd/upscaler player at first. I noticed that some times the PQ sucked, but when I rebooted the player/disc, the PQ was fine. Now with my PS3 I haven't had any weird stuff happen with upscaling (and I love the bluetooth remote).

So does a Blu-Ray player make a regular dvd look good enough to not replace some movies? Like for example a movie that you don't watch that often and doesn't have cgi and other cool effects that would really take advantage of the blu-ray. Or do you guys mainly like to replace all of your dvds to BDs?

Do you have the "sharpness" turned up?It should be close to zero, if not on zero.Try turning the up converting off in the player and see what the picture looks like.I have a 51 inch CRT and i found that my Sony Bluray player plays regular dvd's rather poorly compared to my Sim Audio player.Upconverting players and CRT don't mix.

Upconverted DVDs look good, but never as good as a full 1080p Blu-Ray disc. I've replaced some, not all, of my DVD library with available Blu-Ray titles.

Thanks I assume you probably waited to find some deals on Ebay or another website rather than paying full price for something you already owned in dvd?

It also depends on the movie a lot of older blu ray movies dont look any better then upscaled dvds so its pointless to replace them with blu rays IMO.

Ah, good point. So then probably movies that aren't really visually appealing may not have as much effort put into making them amazing for BD. Makes sense. I'll probably keep a lot of my dvds then when I get my player. Now I am torn between getting the Sony or Samsung since both are at/under $300 now.
