Any interest in a Brazilian / Portuguese subforum?

I was just wondering if anybody else would like to see a sub-forum dedicated to movies/Blu-Rays from Brazil and/or Portugal, and Blu-Rays with Portuguese language options?

It seems like for now, there is not really a good place for posting and sharing information about such titles. There are some posts in the "Spanish" forum, even though they don't really belong there. It just seems like rather a large segment to not have a dedicated sub-forum. After all, Portuguese is the 8th most spoken language in the world, putting it ahead of French, German, Italian and Japanese.

I'm American, but my wife is from Brazil, so I'm always looking for Blu-Rays with Portuguese language options to help my children be immersed in the language, and also to allow her parents to watch movies with us. And with over a million Brazilians now living in the US, I can't be the only one looking for Blu-Rays with Portuguese.

But finding specific titles with Portuguese can be a challenge sometimes. The database here helps, but it's far from complete. I've found that in particular there are a lot of Mexican and Australian Blu-Rays with Portuguese that are not listed in the database. That's why I thought it would be good if there was a place where this kind of information could be shared and discussed.

So if anybody else in interested in a Portuguese sub-forum, please post here, and if we get enough response, maybe we can petition Admin for our own sub-forum.

Always struck me as weird and offensive that Portuguese got lumped in with Spanish. I say go for it.

I thought about posting it there in the first place, but I figured it would reach many more potentially interested members here in the International forum, since this would currently be the de facto place to post about Portuguese/Brazilian titles.

I'm also interested in a portuguese subforum, but please don't forget there's Brazilian and theres Portugal, and it's not the same thing at all specify both countries, otherwise i'm sure there's gonna be plenty people complaining, 'cause we really don't like to be confused with each other.

I think you guys should keep it simple; like i said, only specify both of us. Like: Brazil and Portugal or Brazilian and Portuguese. Like you guys have United Kingdom and Ireland.

Now keep in mind that I'm speaking only as an American who is married to a Brazilian, and that my Portuguese is FAR from perfect.

But from what I've seen, the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are not so vast that they cannot understand each other. My wife has a couple friends from Portugal, and they never seem to have any trouble talking (for hours, sometimes).

And I have quite a few Blu-Rays that have European Portuguese subtitles and/or audio tracks, and we don't have any problem watching them (even though I always try to find versions with Brazilian Portuguese first). From what I can tell, the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are kind of like American English vs British English. Some basic difference in pronunciations and occasional differences in vocabulary, but nothing that really gets in the way of understanding.

I have noticed, though, that Brazilians sometimes seem to be sensitive to the differences. For example, we were watching a news program on Globo International (Brazilian channel) last night, and during part of the story, the Brazilian reporter went to Portugal. During interviews with Portuguese people, I was a bit amused to see Globo providing subtitled translations at the bottom of the screen. I asked my wife if Brazilians can't understand people from Portugal, and she said something to the effect of "Only stupid people can't understand them" I didn't see the Brazilian reporter using a translator, so I suppose he must have been bilingual, being able to speak both Portuguese and Portuguese.

But back to the main point, I have a feeling that at this point, there would probably not be enough activity in the Portuguese subforum to justify two separate forums for Brazilian and Portuguese versions of Blu-Rays. And I would think that there would be enough cross-interest that it would not even be necessary. In other words, I think Brazilians would be interested in movies from Portugal, and vice-versa.

And I would also look at the Spanish sub-forum, which does not have any subdivisions even though Spanish is spoken in numerous large and small countries in a variety of dialects.

I think that is a good suggestion. I wouldn't have a problem with calling it simply "Portuguese" since that is the language, but I would also be in favor of titling it "Portuguese and Brazilian".

Edgar_in_Indy, i think you should read my previous comment. I agree, i don't see why we should have two different subforums for Portugal and Brazil - i feel it's more appropriate to have one, but we've got to specify both countries... like "United Kingdom and Ireland" subforum.

Believe me or not, portuguese and brazilian people can't stand with each other most of the times. I'm portuguese and i just HATE to read anything in PT-BR (like any normal portuguese) and most brazilian people, hate to read anything in PT-PT. But yes, we can understand each other, no matter what. There's some words I don't understand, but nothing special.

I think we kinda have the same relationship of USA and UK when it comes to the language. Maybe a little worse, because we have hard feelings sometimes and we tend to look at our common history. Oh well... hehehe!

EDIT: you already read my comment. Portuguese and Brazilian or Portugal and Brazil sounds good to me. It's more correct.

The written portuguese it's almost the same ( some minor orthographic changes ) so this it will be easy to be understood only the slang changes
