This to me seems to make the most sense. "Brazilian" is not a language, just like "Québécois" is not a language.

Well, I'm Portuguese and I'd be happy if a Portuguese sub-forum was made

Another suggestion I'd like to make is: normally, on any blu-ray's page that has Portuguese audio /subtitles options, it's listed as simply "portuguese". I think it should be split into Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese, so people know what they're getting. For example, if I were to buy this blu-ray box set, and I didn't know that the subtitles in it are Brazilian Portuguese, I'd be kind of disappointed and annoyed - https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-C...-Blu-ray/1306/.

It's not that we Portuguese people don't understand Brazilian Portuguese, it's just that we don't really like it. And Brazilian people don't really like European Portuguese as well.

I've thought about suggesting that in the past, and I think it's an excellent idea. But there should also probably remain an option for just "Portuguese", since a lot of times the person entering the information won't know if it's Brazilian or European. But Portuguese speakers really do seem to consider it to be important information.

I've spoken to another Portuguese user on this forum (https://forum.blu-ray.com/member.php?u=94461), and he says he actually contacted the administrator last year, who said to him that "it's irrelevant if it's Brazilian or European Portuguese, just like British / American English".

I don't think the comparison to British / American English is quite the same. Generally, Americans aren't bothered by the British accent, and many actually like to hear it. We have many British people in the news and media.

I think a lot of Americans view British English as a more proper and formal form of English, but it doesn't seem to be the same with Portuguese. As far as my wife is concerned, people from Portugal speak Portuguese wrong.

Well, when I put info there I always put observation that are Brazilian or Portugal. Actually is not that Portugal Portuguese is wrong but it are very different of ours. I use to say that to me is easier understand spanish from Spain than Portugal Portuguese, usually when the tv show a Portuguese speaking here, they put subtitles. If they putted.there some way we specify if is Brazilian or Portuguese would be very good.

And we think exactly the same about Brazilian.

But it's more than that. Believe me. We have history involved in here, and it always comes out when people discuss. Specially because it was a Portuguese who found Brazil and obviously their actually language come originally from ours, but eventually changed a few - i hear this a lot when there are portuguese and brazilian discussing (not all the times about language). You guys would be surprised, some times it's ridiculous.

From my side, i just don't like to hear or read PT-BR because what Edgar_in_Indy's wife says: it's seems they are speaking wrong portuguese, and it's horrible. And they think the same about PT-PT.

So, it's not the same thing as British / American English - what a ridiculous answer.

Thanks for the idea, count me in for this great initiative.
Most brazilians hate to read/listen anything in pt-pt (portuguese portuguese) but I personally don't care.
Sure it's annoying at first, but after a few minutes you get used to (except for the one used in Madeira Islands, it seems a whole different language to me).
And seems that portuguese people can't stand pt-br as well.
So it seems a very nice idea to specificate which version, but IMO only one subforum is needed.

This is in response to a PM from Edgar_in_Indy:

It is nice to have a sub forum for Blu-Ray titles using the Portuguese as subtitles. So far, it seems that no one has mentioned if this sub forum will contain discussions in Portuguese or English. To me, it seems important to keep this forum as International as possible, so I would keep English as the preferred language.

A number of my older Blu-Ray discs do contain Portugal's Portuguese as subtitles. Although the language is the same and of course intelligible, the expressions, catch phases and idioms are not! Which makes original, non-Brazilian, subtitles harder to understand and often annoying for anyone who is not familiar with Portugal's Portuguese.

For example: in Portugal, "fila" (a line of people) is said "bicha", whereas "bicha" in Brazil is referred to an effeminated or homosexual individual.

The number of different expressions are endless, and this is perhaps one of the strongest reasons why studios sometimes state "Brazilian Portuguese" in the subtitles list.

I have witnessed so many attempts to standardize both languages, none of them ever succeeded.

On the other hand, it seems to me that from a forum perspective these differences can be readily clarified and surely would not pose ulterior problems.

The idea of increasing subtitle options is in my regard highly auspicious, if that is the main reason for the sub forum proposal.

I once wrote to Columbia/Tristar (Sony Pictures) when DVDs were not yet manufactured for Brasil (region 4), in regard to Portuguese subtitles. In response, they issued "Silverado" with Portuguese titles, the first ever from an US studio.

I couldn't agree more with Edgar_in_Indy about the cultural aspects of subtitles in their aid to improve people's skill with foreign languages.

And it is a shame that studios like Olive films disregard this resource, thus preventing most of us to enjoy their unique release of vintage pictures!

"Bicha" its slang and can be said bicha/linha/fila being fila the right word Also Bicha in Portugal have the same meaning as in Brazil depending on the context

Idioms were adapted truth the years and since 2009 Brazil review the Portuguese language and since then the written part of the language it's 99%
the same of course spoken slang comes to play .

The easiest way to do this is to have the same forum and when adding or discussing a new movie is to put Subtitles : Portuguese= Portugal ; Portuguese = Brazil .

Regarding the language on the tread i would accept English or Portuguese since it's done on other treads and maybe this could bring more users to the forums .

Well, so far there has not been any official response from anybody in a position to make it happen, so I would say you're just on time.

How is it that we have a "Scandanavian" sub-forum, but nothing for Portuguese/Brazilian folks. Scandanavian? Really??

I mean, seriously, Sweden, Finland, and Norway have a combined population of about 20 million, and they get a sub-forum, but languages like Portuguese and Russian, each spoken by close to 200 million people, don't have a sub-forum?
